         Scope and Sequence for Information Technologies

            The importance of the role of technology in education is well recognised
            throughout Australia. In order to be informed and active participants in
            our changing society now and in the future, students will need to be self-
            directed learners, able to identify issues, pose questions, synthesise
            ideas and develop solutions to problems.

                                 Computer-based technologies in the primary KLAs
                             NSW Department of Education & Training 1997 p11


Students at Cardiff North Public School will participate in activities that assist in the
development of their ability to:

   Use information technologies to locate, access, evaluate, manipulate, create, store
     and retrieve information.
   Express ideas and communicate with others, using information technologies.
   Develop an awareness of the range of applications of information technologies in
     society.
   Discriminate in the choice and use of information technologies for a given purpose.
   Develop the confidence to explore, adapt and shape technological understandings
     and skills in response to challenges now and in the future.
   Type quickly and accurately.




                                                    The following Scope and Sequence may
                                                    appear to be similar in successive stages,
                                                    however, it must be noted that the degree
                                                    of complexity, the sophistication of
                                                    analysis or the level of independence in
                                                    the selection and use of information
                                                    technologies throughout the K-6
                                                    progression.

The Scope and Sequence for

                                                           document consists of three
                                                           sections.

                                                           Syllabus outcomes/indicators
                                                           to information technologies
                                                           consists of a stage by stage
                                                           overview of the specific
                                                           outcomes and a sample of
                                                           indicators relating to
                                                           information technologies.




Section A consists of a K-6 index that illustrates when each skill should be:

a.   Introduced by the teacher.
b.   Reinforced by the teacher.
c.   Student working independently.

Section B outlines the skills by grade and stage levels. Software application, stage level
projects, work samples and activities are also suggested in this section.

In both sections of the document, the scope and sequence for information technologies
is divided into the following content strands:

   Word Processing Skills
   Database and Spreadsheet Skills
   Multimedia Skills
   Internet, Intranet and Email Skills
   Ethical Skills
   Mobile Learning

Tech        UTES1.9

Identifies and uses a limited range of equipment, computer-based technology, materials and
other resources when undertaking exploration and production.

     Writes and sends, with assistance, an email to a buddy, then describes what they did.
     Uses a touch sensitive pad or standard keyboard to help develop and publish a group
       report.
     Uses an overhead projector with assistance, to explore how light passes through some
       materials and not others.
     Uses a digital or reflex camera with assistance, to record changes over time.
     Operates a CD player and a tape recorder, understanding the functions of the buttons.

English               WES1.12

Produces most lower-case and upper-case letters and uses computer technologies to begin to
construct texts.

     Experiments with using the computer mouse and keyboard and other specialised
       equipment.
     Produces own name.
     Produces some letters other than those in their name.
     Produces commonly used words.
     Moves the cursor using the mouse and keyboard and other specialised equipment.
     Associates the pressing of a key with the appearance of a character on the screen.
     Turns the computer on and off.
     Identifies the cursor on screen.
     Recognises letters on the keyboard.
     Uses computer software programs to create texts.
     Types simple sentences.

     Uses an overhead projector to retell a narrative using shadow or silhouettes.
     Uses graphic software to draw a design.
     Uses a digital/reflex camera to record images.
     Consults CD-Roms and bookmarked websites to acquire information.

English                     WS1.12

Produces texts using letters of consistent size and slope in NSW Foundation Style and using
computer technology.

     Experiments with computer functions.
     Uses functions when editing.
     Accurately uses words associated with computers, eg keyboard, screen, cursor, mouse,
       disk, space bar.
     Enlarges and changes text font.
     Produces a card or invitation using both graphics and written text.
     Types sentence/s without assistance.
     Recognises letters on the keyboard.
     Uses computer software to create texts.
     Inserts and ejects a disk.
     Recognises simple conventions, eg space bar for spaces, shift and caps lock for upper-case
       letters, tab.
     Uses computer terminology, eg save, delete, open, exit, print, hard disk, floppy disk, menu,
       save as, command, caps lock.

     Experiments with a range of Desk Top Publishing features.
     Designs, makes and uses a database to record information.
     Uses a digital/reflex camera.
     Consults computer software and computer technologies to access information and to
       record it.
     Uses email to acquire information.

English                    WS2.12

Uses joint letters when writing in NSW Foundation Style and demonstrates basic desktop
publishing skills on the computer.

     Selects and inserts graphics or illustrations to enhance text meaning.
     Locates and uses spell check.
     Changes appearance of text according to purpose.
     Carries out basic functions, eg drafts, redrafts, prints, saves to correct place and
       retrieves a text.
     Saves texts at regular intervals.
     Edits spelling and sentence structure.
     Uses word processing programs to design text for paper-based and electronic publication,
       eg class newsletter, website.
     Investigates other forms of publishing, eg slide shows.
     Sets out writing in form suitable for purpose.

     Creates a database using relevant information selected from a range of electronic and
       print references.
     Uses email to acquire information.

Produces texts in a fluent and legible style and uses computer technology to present these
effectively in a variety of ways.

     Uses computer software programs and associated technology to format a variety of
       texts.
     Locates and uses thesaurus.
     Varies font and layout to suit audience and purpose.

     Designs and organises information for a web page.

  • 1. Cardiff North Public School Scope and Sequence for Information Technologies The importance of the role of technology in education is well recognised throughout Australia. In order to be informed and active participants in our changing society now and in the future, students will need to be self- directed learners, able to identify issues, pose questions, synthesise ideas and develop solutions to problems. Computer-based technologies in the primary KLAs NSW Department of Education & Training 1997 p11 Students at Cardiff North Public School will participate in activities that assist in the development of their ability to:  Use information technologies to locate, access, evaluate, manipulate, create, store and retrieve information.  Express ideas and communicate with others, using information technologies.  Develop an awareness of the range of applications of information technologies in society.  Discriminate in the choice and use of information technologies for a given purpose.  Develop the confidence to explore, adapt and shape technological understandings and skills in response to challenges now and in the future.  Type quickly and accurately. The following Scope and Sequence may appear to be similar in successive stages, however, it must be noted that the degree of complexity, the sophistication of analysis or the level of independence in the selection and use of information technologies throughout the K-6 progression.   • 2. The Scope and Sequence for Information Technologies document consists of three sections. Syllabus outcomes/indicators to information technologies consists of a stage by stage overview of the specific outcomes and a sample of indicators relating to information technologies. Section A consists of a K-6 index that illustrates when each skill should be: a. Introduced by the teacher. b. Reinforced by the teacher. c. Student working independently. Section B outlines the skills by grade and stage levels. Software application, stage level projects, work samples and activities are also suggested in this section. In both sections of the document, the scope and sequence for information technologies is divided into the following content strands:  Basic Computer Skills  Word Processing Skills  Database and Spreadsheet Skills  Multimedia Skills  Internet, Intranet and Email Skills  Ethical Skills  Mobile Learning CNPS Technology Scope and Sequence 2

Early Stage One Syllabus Outcomes/Indicators Relating to Information Sci & Technologies Tech UTES1.9 Identifies and uses a limited range of equipment, computer-based technology, materials and other resources when undertaking exploration and production.  Writes and sends, with assistance, an email to a buddy, then describes what they did.  Uses a touch sensitive pad or standard keyboard to help develop and publish a group report.  Uses an overhead projector with assistance, to explore how light passes through some materials and not others.  Uses a digital or reflex camera with assistance, to record changes over time.  Operates a CD player and a tape recorder, understanding the functions of the buttons. English WES1.12 Produces most lower-case and upper-case letters and uses computer technologies to begin to construct texts.  Experiments with using the computer mouse and keyboard and other specialised equipment.  Produces own name.  Produces some letters other than those in their name.  Produces commonly used words.  Moves the cursor using the mouse and keyboard and other specialised equipment.  Associates the pressing of a key with the appearance of a character on the screen.  Turns the computer on and off.  Identifies the cursor on screen.  Recognises letters on the keyboard.  Uses computer software programs to create texts.  Types simple sentences. Stage One Syllabus Outcomes/Indicators Sci Relating to Information & Technologies Tech UTS1.9 Selects and uses a range of equipment, computer-based technology, materials and other resources to undertake an investigation or design task.  With teacher assistance, downloads images from a digital camera for publication.  Uses an overhead projector to retell a narrative using shadow or silhouettes.  Uses graphic software to draw a design.  Uses a digital/reflex camera to record images.  Consults CD-Roms and bookmarked websites to acquire information. English WS1.12 Produces texts using letters of consistent size and slope in NSW Foundation Style and using computer technology.  Experiments with computer functions.  Uses functions when editing.  Accurately uses words associated with computers, eg keyboard, screen, cursor, mouse, disk, space bar.  Enlarges and changes text font.  Produces a card or invitation using both graphics and written text.  Types sentence/s without assistance.  Recognises letters on the keyboard.  Uses computer software to create texts.  Inserts and ejects a disk.  Recognises simple conventions, eg space bar for spaces, shift and caps lock for upper-case letters, tab.  Uses computer terminology, eg save, delete, open, exit, print, hard disk, floppy disk, menu, save as, command, caps lock. Sci & Stage Two Syllabus Outcomes/Indicators Relating to Information Technologies Tech UTS2.9 Selects and uses a range of equipment, computer-based technology, materials and other resources with developing skill to enhance investigation and design tasks.  Uses a variety of electronic resources for research.  Identifies an appropriate medium for presentation/publication.  Experiments with a range of Desk Top Publishing features.  Designs, makes and uses a database to record information.  Uses a digital/reflex camera.  Consults computer software and computer technologies to access information and to record it.  Uses email to acquire information. English WS2.12 Uses joint letters when writing in NSW Foundation Style and demonstrates basic desktop publishing skills on the computer.  Selects and inserts graphics or illustrations to enhance text meaning.  Locates and uses spell check.  Changes appearance of text according to purpose.  Carries out basic functions, eg drafts, redrafts, prints, saves to correct place and retrieves a text.  Saves texts at regular intervals.  Edits spelling and sentence structure.  Uses word processing programs to design text for paper-based and electronic publication, eg class newsletter, website.  Investigates other forms of publishing, eg slide shows.  Sets out writing in form suitable for purpose. Sci & Stage Three Syllabus Outcomes/Indicators Relating to Information Technologies Tech UTS3.9 Evaluates, selects and uses a range of equipment, computer-based technology, materials and other resources to meet the requirements and constraints of investigation and design tasks.  Uses bookmarked websites to acquire and compare information.  Writes and sends an email with an attachment.  Selects and uses appropriate media to record and investigate information.  Creates a database using relevant information selected from a range of electronic and print references.  Uses email to acquire information. English WS3.12 Produces texts in a fluent and legible style and uses computer technology to present these effectively in a variety of ways.  Uses computer software programs and associated technology to format a variety of texts.  Locates and uses thesaurus.  Varies font and layout to suit audience and purpose.  Chooses appropriate graphics to accompany text.  Designs and organises information for a web page.  Locates and uses columns or borders when appropriate.  Adds graphics, changes spacing and style when publishing.  Uses word processing programs to design school/class newspaper,  importing graphics and written texts from a range of sources.  Uses multimedia authoring software to create published work.  Creates texts that incorporate graphics or tables when appropriate.
