• Variable = a letter representing an unknown number 
ex. 5m + ½, m is a variable 
• Constant = a number 
ex. 5m + ½, 5 and ½ are constants

• Factor = #s that are multiplied together 
ex. 5m + ½, 5 and m are factors 
• Coefficient = #s that are next to a letter (variable) 
ex. 5m + ½, 5 is a coefficient

• Terms of an expression = parts of a math 
problem separated by + or – signs 
One Term = 4x or (y+2) or -8 or

Two Terms = x – 3ym 
Three Terms = 3x + 2y + 10 
Four Terms = x + 4xym -
