MBA in Entrepreneurship 2012-14,
Faculty of Management Studies, Sri Sri University
Background

The Commission of the European Communities 2003 has noted that entrepreneurial spirit is
the asset responsible for creating employment, competitiveness and the potential to exploit
any sector or business. Schumpeter defines an entrepreneur, “is a person who is willing and
able to convert a new idea or invention into a successful innovation. Entrepreneurship is the
capacity to develop ideas, the process to arrange resources required to exploit opportunities in
the market place, to create opportunities and to achieve success with them. Innovation, the
acceptance of change and risk, the mobilization of resources and the tapping of opportunities
are just some of the factors involved in creating a competitive or sustainable enterprise.

Entrepreneurship ranges in scale from single projects to major undertakings creating many
job opportunities. Many "high value" entrepreneurial ventures seek venture capital or seed
money in order to raise capital to build the business. Many kinds of organizations now exist
to support would-be entrepreneurs including specialized government agencies, business
incubators, science parks, and various NGOs. In more recent times, the term entrepreneurship
has been extended in the form of social entrepreneurship, political entrepreneurship, or
knowledge entrepreneurship. Nevertheless, the indices for enterprise creation in India are low
in compare to other developing countries owing to its institutional and infrastructural
arrangement, leadership and managerial risk taking ability, trade policies, gender related
issues, transparency and accountability. In order to fill this gap, the core curriculum of Sri Sri
University (SSU) SSU MBA in Entrepreneurship is designed to give students an in-depth
mastery of the academic disciplines and applied functional areas necessary to every business
leader‟s success.

PEDAGOGY
MBA in Entrepreneurship is targeted at those individuals who wish to learn more about the
act of identifying a business opportunity and turn opportunity into viable organizations that
create value, and empowers students to develop their own approaches, guidelines, and skills
for being entrepreneurial managers. The MBA in Entrepreneurship Program of SSU would
facilitate valuable teaching, training, case analysis, industrial exposure, lived experience
sharing and presentation require to enhance knowledge in establishing and running a
business. Taught by both full-time professors and practitioners, the core leaves students with
more than just practical knowledge; case-based lessons and collaborative learning models
train students to analyse, decide, and lead. Total Credits required to complete the MBA in
Entrepreneurship is 60. Of the 60 credits 35 are Academic Credits and 25 are Non-academic
Credits. Summer Project in Trimester IV and Capstone Project in Trimester in VIII are non-
pedagogical academic trimesters.
Industry Outreach Initiatives
Corporate academics relationship is an important element since it can provide the necessary
skills and knowledge to the students. There have been significant current developments
since it was realised that such tie ups and partnerships are required which will benefit both
in the long run. Management students are the prospective managers and leaders and this
requires them to align their thoughts in that line. This can happen only if students are aware
about the latest trends and dynamics in the industry. As future leaders there is no better
way to learn than from the leaders themselves.

Industry outreach initiative at Sri Sri University is designed keeping in mind the need to have
a close network between the industry and academic institutes. Students at Faculty of
Management studies of Sri Sri University are frequently taken through sessions where they
get a chance to interact and learn from corporate leaders. The invited leaders are from
multiple streams and subjects and speak on the latest trends and developments in the
industry. Some of these leaders are also specifically chosen and invited to speak on a topic
which are of special interests. Such sessions from the corporate also help in bridging the gap
which usually exists in management students who are new to the corporate world. Having a
realistic understanding about the corporate world helps in providing better management
education, this will generate future potentials leaders who are better equipped to face the
corporate challenges.

All Indian classical arts forms anchored are on deep spirituality. According to Hindu

Brahma had gifted manking, the four Vedas, they were not able to follow it due to lack of
discipline. So Brahma decided to create the fifth Veda- it called “Natya Veda”, in which the
process of doing becomes effortless and joyful. The basis for Indian music is a combination of

                           MBA in Agribusiness Management
Faculty of Management Studies, Sri Sri University

Background
The term agribusiness refers to various businesses those involved in food production,
including farming, seed supply, agrichemicals, farm machinery, wholesale, distribution,
processing, marketing and retail sales. Agribusiness Industry works on various levels
primarily from growing of crops, vegetables, seeds, animal production, livestock production,
aquaculture, Fishery, herbal and flower products etc. The second level of agribusiness is
processing of crops, seeds, herbs, meat, milk and other agri and allied processed foods. The
third level on which this Industry operates is packaging and branding of these products using
latest technology and selling/serving to the final consumers. Agriculture has now been
playing a vital role in the economic growth of developing countries including the growing
industrialization and its importance has increased agri-products in the several-folds. In India a
major portion of our country GDP comes from agriculture sector which also employ 65
percent of the Indian population (especially rural women) employing over 600 million people
(more than Europe's population), in various roles as farmers, marginal farmers, land less
farmers and labourers. Moreover, now, the food and food-products import-export policies
also play important role in the overall development of any country and the world as a whole.

Indian model of green revolution contributed to the agriculture sector that entered into a
huge transitional phase with historically rapid growth trend after 2002. While strong
technology base R&D was central, the collective work of the scientists, extension
functionaries, policy makers, the political system and above all the farmers is the core. This
was a team effort spearheaded by C. Subramanian, Norman Borlaug, B.P. Pal and M.S.
Swaminathan. „Operation Flood‟ by the National Dairy Development Board in 1970 under
the Chairmanship of Dr. Varghese Kurien has transformed India into the largest producer of
milk and contributed significantly to the country‟s growth trajectory. Government of India,
State Government, various Agriculture Institutions, banks and Agribusiness organizations are
also seriously replication such methods and encouraging the sector towards shifting
agriculture into a market oriented and viable business venture.

Developing countries have less resource to invest in long-term adaptive capacity of farmers
such as public awareness, liquid financial markets and well-built institutional network to
increase resilience to climate change and help mitigate critical temperature thresholds and
weather extremes. Further, land resources are shrinking, area under agriculture is reducing
sharply, water resources are depleting and polluting at a fast pace. Thus in a globally
competitive world, bringing into forefront the critical thinking, insightfulness and creative
solution are important for addressing the challenges of our times and competitive advantage.
Agribusiness must be a means to improve the wellbeing of the marginal farmers, landless
labourers and women through value addition, creation of competitive agribusiness
enterprises, technology innovation, commercialization and inventing local solution as “fit for
all size”. The Founder and Chairperson of MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, Padma
Shri (Dr.) M. S. Swaminathan is the board of advisors of Sri Sri University. Dr.Swaminathan
perceives that educated young people will take to farming and farm related enterprises only if
agriculture becomes intellectually stimulating and economically rewarding by means of
partnership with private players and entrepreneur.

Keeping this view in backdrop, MBA Program in Agri-Business Management (ABM) of Sri
Sri University becomes a timely initiative. The course curriculum of ABM is designed to give
students an in-depth mastery of the academic disciplines and applied functional areas
necessary to every agri-business leader‟s success. The unique needs of agribusiness
professionals are comprise of knowledge and skills in elements of agriculture sector policy
issues, technology, marketing, financeand. Further, the complex interplay among primary
producers of agri-food products, small business entrepreneurship, traders and other market
intermediaries in the value chain. The objectives of MBA in ABM are as below:
To create awareness among the students the scope and prospect of sustainable
        Agribusiness of any size in India;
To train students the principles and practices of agricultural production, value
addition, systematic marketing, food supply chain, global trends and future
        challenges;
To collaborate with reputed agriculture institutions and organizations in India and
abroad, successful agri-entrepreneur and various Government agencies enabling
summer internship and capstan project for students and acquire knowledge through
        training and exposure;
To create a new breed of agribusiness professionals needed to manage the
transformation of rural economy and contribution of the agribusiness in developing
        economies;
To enhance the sustainability and capability of agricultural enterprises by providing
trained students with knowledge of international standards on food safety, traceability
        of food products, local and global trade policies;
To create a platform to motivate and provide systematic guidance to the prospective
students to realize their dream as Agripreneurs.

Agribusiness Industry works on various levels primarily from growing of crops, vegetables, seeds, animal production, livestock production, aquaculture, Fishery, herbal and flower products etc. The second level of agribusiness is processing of crops, seeds, herbs, meat, milk and other agri and allied processed foods. The third level on which this Industry operates is packaging and branding of these products using latest technology and selling/serving to the final consumers. Agriculture has now been playing a vital role in the economic growth of developing countries including the growing industrialization and its importance has increased agri-products in the several-folds. In India a major portion of our country GDP comes from agriculture sector which also employ 65 percent of the Indian population (especially rural women) employing over 600 million people (more than Europe's population), in various roles as farmers, marginal farmers, land less farmers and labourers. Moreover, now, the food and food-products import-export policies also play important role in the overall development of any country and the world as a whole. Indian model of green revolution contributed to the agriculture sector that entered into a huge transitional phase with historically rapid growth trend after 2002. While strong technology base R&D was central, the collective work of the scientists, extension functionaries, policy makers, the political system and above all the farmers is the core. This was a team effort spearheaded by C. Subramanian, Norman Borlaug, B.P. Pal and M.S. Swaminathan. „Operation Flood‟ by the National Dairy Development Board in 1970 under the Chairmanship of Dr. Varghese Kurien has transformed India into the largest producer of milk and contributed significantly to the country‟s growth trajectory. Government of India, State Government, various Agriculture Institutions, banks and Agribusiness organizations are also seriously replication such methods and encouraging the sector towards shifting agriculture into a market oriented and viable business venture. Developing countries have less resource to invest in long-term adaptive capacity of farmers such as public awareness, liquid financial markets and well-built institutional network to
  • 8. increase resilience to climate change and help mitigate critical temperature thresholds and weather extremes. Further, land resources are shrinking, area under agriculture is reducing sharply, water resources are depleting and polluting at a fast pace. Thus in a globally competitive world, bringing into forefront the critical thinking, insightfulness and creative solution are important for addressing the challenges of our times and competitive advantage. Agribusiness must be a means to improve the wellbeing of the marginal farmers, landless labourers and women through value addition, creation of competitive agribusiness enterprises, technology innovation, commercialization and inventing local solution as “fit for all size”. The Founder and Chairperson of MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, Padma Shri (Dr.) M. S. Swaminathan is the board of advisors of Sri Sri University. Keeping this view in backdrop, MBA Program in Agri-Business Management (ABM) of Sri Sri University becomes a timely initiative. The course curriculum of ABM is designed to give students an in-depth mastery of the academic disciplines and applied functional areas necessary to every agri-business leader‟s success. The unique needs of agribusiness professionals are comprise of knowledge and skills in elements of agriculture sector policy issues, technology, marketing, financeand. Further, the complex interplay among primary producers of agri-food products, small business entrepreneurship, traders and other market intermediaries in the value chain.
