Pinehurst Country Club
Tree Management Program Guide

February 2014
Pinehurst Grounds Department
Denver, Colorado

1
The Tree Management Program Guide at Pinehurst Country Club is established to maintain and enhance the tree
plantings where they have become an integral part of the golf course design. The plan will determine which trees
are integral to the playability and strategy of the course and those which may adversely impact the course.
The management of our urban forest is an important task. Identifying, quantifying, and understanding the tree
population is crucial to determining a comprehensive, long term approach to its well being. Trees will generally live
longer and gradually require less intensive care with scheduled maintenance.
The tree inventory is an integral element of the comprehensive plan. The process follows three phases. The
development of the Tree Management Plan at Pinehurst Country Club includes three phases.
I INVENTORY
II ANALYSIS
III IMPLEMENTATION
I INVENTORY
The inventory is the foundation for formulating the plan. An inventory of trees provides detailed information for
the manager. Inventory data must be systematically collected and stored for analysis. Managers can forecast
maintenance and replacement needs and budget for tree-related expenditures based on this information.
This data aids in developing long-range planning and design decisions such as new plantings, ensuring species
diversification, and prioritizing maintenance actions.
Tree inventory information can be input into a computer aided drafting program database and geographical
information system (GIS) to build an integrated tree management plan and effectively maintain the installation’s
tree resources.
Trees vary considerably in life expectancy, growth habit, and maintenance requirements. It is important to record
and maintain composite data on the various species found on the installation for the purpose of completing other
requirements such as tree maintenance budgeting and personnel scheduling.
A) Data Collection
The first step in accomplishing a tree inventory is to systematically collect and store data. Tree species, location,
size, and overall condition of the tree population are the primary items collected. It is imperative that consistency
and accuracy of the tree data be maintained throughout the inventory phase.
Individual tree locations can be determined by aerial photos, detailed ground measurements, Global Positioning
Systems, or a combination of all. Each tree is recorded on a map and assigned a number for entry into the
database. Individual trees are identified by common and botanical names and numbered sequentially. This helps to
determine the overall composition of the installation’s tree population.
B) Location
Initially trees will be located and numbered by a hole-to-hole description. At a later date, tree locations will be
mapped by GPS and placed on map program of the Lynx Irrigation Program. See attached sheets.
C) Identification
Trees will be identified by their type, age classification and current condition. See attached sheets
D) Size Classification
Tree trunk diameter is an indicator of the relative age of the tree. Collectively, this information provides insight
into the maturity distribution for each species. Diameter is measured at 4-1/2 feet above the ground.

2
E) Overall Condition
Condition addresses the current state of the tree’s health, structural soundness, shape, and growth rate.
Discoloration, decay, dieback, decreased internodal length, and/or disfigured or dead stems or roots are symptoms
of poor condition. The overall health and condition of a tree is determined by analyzing root characteristics, trunk
and branch structure, canopy, foliage, and any presence of disease and pests.
EXCELLENT - trees have the best qualities of their species. They have excellent form and very minor
maintenance problems. There are virtually no dead branches, deformities, or nutritional problems. They are in an
acceptable location and can be expected to achieve a full mature shape and life expectancy.
GOOD - trees are judged to be desirable and with proper maintenance can be returned to an excellent
classification. They may be interfering with utility lines, planted in an overcrowded location, or have minor insect,
pathogen, or nutritional deficiencies.
FAIR - (Declining) trees have some or all of the following problems: large dead limbs with as much as half
the tree already dead, large cavities in the trunk, major deformities, girdling roots, obvious insect, pathogen, or
nutritional problems. Immediate maintenance and proper care may be able to save the tree.
POOR - trees are in a very degraded condition with irreversible problems. They have over 50% dead
branches, drastic deformities, and severe insect, pathogen, or nutritional problems. They will have to be removed
as soon as possible. DEAD trees have over 90% dead branches and have completely succumbed to insects,
pathogens, or nutritional deficiencies. Removal is required.
II ANALYSIS
The tree inventory will be used in prioritizing maintenance tasks. Overall maintenance requirements will be
determined by observing the condition of the trunk, large branches, and canopy of each tree, as well as the tree’s
location relative to the course design. These conditions may necessitate pruning to maintain line of sight and avoid
poor turf conditions.
Tree condition data should be used to develop cost-effective pruning and removal schedules. The following areas
contribute to establishing a viable maintenance program:
Species diversification
Approximate age and life expectancy
Removal and pruning requirements
A) Species Diversification
In general, no genus and species (e.g., Quercus rubra) should account for more that 10% of the total tree
population. Further, no single genus (e.g., Quercus) should comprise more than 30% of the total tree population.
Having a large concentration of one species could lead to a large number of trees being lost if affected by insect or
disease pathogens; an entire species of trees could be at risk.
B) Approximate Age and Life Expectancy
Tree species have different life expectancies and different diameters, heights, and crown spreads at maturity. It is,
therefore, more useful to make general classifications of age such as young, mature, and over mature rather than
actual years. The diameter of a tree measured at 4-1/2 feet above the ground is the standard used to classify tree
age.
YOUNG trees are 6 inches or less in diameter
MATURE trees are 6 to 24 inches in diameter
OVER MATURE trees are greater than 24 inches in diameter
The ideal age distribution of a species in the urban forest, and for the population as a whole, is 20% young, 60%
mature, and 20% over mature. A high percentage of over mature trees could necessitate a massive, expensive
removal and replanting program. An appropriate age mixture can be achieved by removing and replanting a

3
certain percentage of trees each year. Removals should never exceed plantings. Trees should not be removed
based solely on age, but condition rating and species type will be considered.
C) Removal and Pruning Requirements
Trees lose vigor and die from natural causes such as disease and insect pathogens, weather conditions, and from
physical injury due to vehicles, vandalism, poisoning, and root disturbance. Trees should be removed to
• Reduce safety risks to persons or property
• To improve appearance/playability
Tree maintenance requirements can be categorized as follows:
HIGH-PRIORITY REMOVAL trees should be removed as soon as possible as their location and/or condition
present risks to persons or property.
LOW-PRIORITY REMOVAL trees should be scheduled and accomplished when resources are available.
IMMEDIATE PRUNING trees present safety risks to persons or property. They may have dangerous broken
branches and large deadwood. Pruning should be accomplished as soon as possible, along with a close
examination for decay or severe dieback. If these conditions exist, the tree should be removed.
HIGH-PRIORITY PRUNING trees should be attended to as soon as scheduling will allow, starting with those
presenting the greatest safety risks. They have broken branches and areas of deadwood but do not present an
immediate safety hazard to persons or property. They should also be examined closely during trimming operations
for signs of decay or severe dieback and removed if necessary.
ROUTINE PRUNING requires the removal of dead, dying, diseased, or obviously weak, heavy, or hazardous
branches, and deadwood. Routine, ongoing pruning should be scheduled and programmed to ensure all tree
pruning is accomplished on a minimum cycle of five to seven years. It is important to remember that low priority
problems can become high priority if they are neglected for an extended period of time.
Thinning of tree canopies to reduce crossing or unnecessary branches should be accomplished routinely. This
reduces the potential for wind-induced branch breakage and increases sunlight and air circulation within the
crown. Thinning of tree canopies substantially reduces the incidence of insect and disease related problems.
All pruning should be completed based on ANSI A300 standard and approved by the clubs arborist. There should
never be any more than 25 % reduction in foliage in any one year.
III IMPLEMENTATION
A) Mulching
Probably the most neglected tree care practice is mulching. Placing 4 inches of organic mulch over the entire root
system reduces environmental stress, conserves moisture, minimizes mechanical damage from mowers and weed
eaters, and reduces nutrient competition from weeds and turf. Although any organic matter can be used as mulch,
shredded leaves, pine straw, peat moss, and shredded or composted tree bark and chips are the most widely
accepted amendments. Care must be taken to ensure that a 4 inch wide ring around the tree trunk is maintained
clear of mulch to guard against decay and other problems associated with excessive moisture.
B) Monitoring
Monitoring insect and disease infestations by regular inspections and responsive treatment will help to maintain
the health and vitality of the trees. A certified arborist can take steps to prevent or reduce the severity of future
disease, insect, and other pathogenic problems through periodic inspections (at least once a year). By closely
observing new leaves or buds, leaf size, twig growth, and crown dieback, a treatment can be recommended to
prevent major problems from affecting the tree population. Signs of poor tree health include trunk decay, loose
bark, and deformed growths.

4
C) Preventative Maintenance
Preventative maintenance and treatment for known regional pests will protect tree investments. Consult with local
certified arborists and use only licensed and experienced pest management professionals when treatment is
required.
D) Planting
1. Generally, on a young tree, the uppermost structural roots (two or more) should be within the top 1 to 3 inches
of the soil surface, measured 3 to 4 inches from the trunk. As a tree matures, roots thicken faster on the top side,
effectively reducing the amount of soil above the structural roots and forming the root flare. Special situations
requiring exceptions to this general guideline include the following:
• Some species may develop more strongly descending root systems; therefore, the structural roots may
have to be located nearer the trunk. On landscape sites with poorly drained soil, the roots may need to be even
shallower for adequate survival. Structural roots may need to be at, or slightly above, the surrounding grade under
extreme conditions.
• In some species, the roots regenerated after transplanting can grow back toward the trunk and become
girdling roots. Initial research shows that very little soil over the structural roots could be problematic. Celtis
occidentalis (hackberry), Fraxinus pennsylvanica (green ash), Acer rubrum (red maple), Tilia cordata (littleleaf
linden), Populus spp. (poplars), and Malus spp. (crabapples) are species for which this is known to be a problem.
Other species with aggressive root systems may also exhibit this tendency.
2. Checking root depth can be done in the nursery before digging (preferred), or container root ball just prior to
planting. Presence of a visible root flare is a good indicator that the structural roots are just below the
soil surface. However, on grafted trees, be careful not to confuse the swelling of the trunk below the graft union
with the actual root flare. A gap around the trunk at the soil line is a sure sign that the first roots are at least
several inches below the soil surface.
3. If none of these easily recognized signs are present in the field, or if the root ball burlap and twine cover the
base of the tree, a surveyor’s chaining pin or similar tool can be used to quickly and nondestructively probe for the
roots. Probing approximately 3 to 4 inches away from the trunk will determine the true depth of the roots, rather
than the depth of the enlarged root flare, if present. At least two roots (preferably more) should be located within
1 to 3 inches of the soil surface.
4. When root balls arrive on site, the depth of the structural roots should be checked before placing the tree in the
planting hole.
5. Bud-grafted cultivars, and some seedling trees, are cut back during production. Evidence of the “dog leg” in the
stem and of a change in bark texture should be approximately 1 to 2 inches above the soil surface for a young tree,
with a maximum of 4 to 5 inches between the pruning wound and the uppermost structural roots.
6. If the structural roots have been located within 3 inches of the surface, the root ball should be planted with the
surface no lower than the same level as existing grade. One to two inches higher usually is preferable to allow for
settling and “pancaking” of the root ball. Unless conditions are extreme, do not plant so high that the cut ends of
the structural roots at the edge of the root ball are above the surrounding grade. Planting the tree any higher may
expose roots after minor erosion or contribute to surface root formation in the long run.
7. If the structural roots are found to be deeper than 3 inches below the root ball surface, the root ball and the
planting depth will have to be adjusted. Elevate the root ball so that the structural roots are at the correct depth
relative to surrounding grade. It is best to leave root balls intact until placed in the planting hole, rather than to
unwrap them and strip the soil off the top before moving the root ball into the planting hole. Moving an
unwrapped root ball may cause unnecessary damage.
8. If there is extra soil over the structural roots, it may be acceptable in some situations to leave the root ball
intact, with the extra soil remaining above grade through the guarantee period. Some contractors prefer to leave
the burlap, rope, and wire basket in place for a time to keep the root ball more stable and make it easier to
straighten later, if needed. If the wrappings are not removed at planting time, the tree should be checked at the

5
end of the guarantee period, and any remnants of the wrappings or excess soil remaining above grade should be
removed.
9. Suddenly removing excess soil could be problematic for other reasons. The extra soil over the structural roots
could be filled with fibrous roots which, if removed suddenly, could cause extra stress. There have been reports of
cold or sunscald damage of the newly exposed tissue on trees when the extra soil was suddenly removed from the
base of the trunk (this could actually be a portion of the original primary root [tap root], in some cases). Late-fall
plantings may be the most susceptible to cold damage. Earlier plantings may have time to harden off normally.
Thin-barked trees may be most susceptible to sun injury.
10. Until this situation is more fully understood, exercise caution when removing soil and exposing tissue that has
been below grade. Leaving the extra soil in place above grade to be removed slowly or erode away may help to
protect sensitive trunk tissues. Mulch can be used to hide the protruding root ball. If the soil is removed, covering
newly exposed tissue with organic mulch may help to protect it from sun and cold damage. A trunk wrap may
provide some protection from the sun. This material should degrade within one year or must otherwise be
removed from the tree in that time period.
11. Mulching is an excellent way to conserve soil moisture, reduce competition from other plants, and prevent
lawn mower injury. Two inches of mulch is the appropriate depth for 2- to 3-inch-caliper trees. Later applications
to “refresh” the mulch should not increase the depth. Keep the mulch away from the trunk. Avoid thick layers of
mulch around the base of the tree (often called “volcano mulching”), as is far too often seen in landscapes. Do not
pile the extra soil around the base of tree and use mulch to hide it—excess soil should be removed from the
planting site. Avoid organic material that can mat down and create a hydrophobic layer.
12. There are many trees already planted in the landscape with the structural roots too deep. These trees are likely
to have reduced vigor and shorter life spans if no remedial action is taken. For recently planted trees (less than two
to three months of warm soil for root growth), the greatest long-term benefit will be achieved by replanting the
tree at the proper depth. For partially established trees, the best remedial treatment may depend on several
factors. Replanting a partially established tree will cause additional stress; therefore, the benefits of replanting
such a tree must outweigh the risks. If the tree is in good health and growing vigorously, it may be best to do
nothing. A tree that appears to be struggling may need to be replanted at the proper depth, as long as the tree is
in good enough health to survive the additional stress of replanting. Do not waste money replanting trees that
already show signs of serious decline. Trees on low-quality, poorly drained soils are more likely to need to be
replanted than those on high-quality sites.
13. For larger, fully established trees, a practice being used regularly by arborists is a root collar excavation to
remove the excess soil in contact with the trunk. Removal of this soil reduces the possibility of basal and collar rot
diseases, and it improves aeration to the structural roots at lower depths.
14. Roots regenerated after planting originate mostly at the perimeter of the root ball and usually grow up to their
natural depth closer to the surface. Do not expose these roots. When the structural roots moved with the tree are
too deep, the newly generated roots sometimes have been observed to grow toward the trunk rather than away
from the trunk, as is normal. Removing the soil near the trunk can expose these “misdirected” roots and allow
their removal so that they do not become girding roots. The excavated soil is sometimes replaced with wellaerated mulch or gravel.

Trees To Avoid Planting

Known safety hazard trees such as a cottonwood. Extensive root systems, fast growing and weak limbs
can present problems above and below the golfer.
Fruit and pod bearing trees on the golf course. These trees produce a lot of debris that can present
hazards to golfers. Trees such as apples, plums and locusts. Seek out non-fruit or pod bearing varieties.
Trees susceptible to disease, insects and other know problems in the area. Mountain Pine beetle, pine
wilt, brown tortoise shell, ips, emerald ash borer, fire blight, witches broom can be problematic with our
inventory of trees.

Pinehurst CC Tree Management Program Guide

  • 1. Pinehurst Country Club Tree Management Program Guide February 2014 Pinehurst Grounds Department Denver, Colorado 1
  • 2. The Tree Management Program Guide at Pinehurst Country Club is established to maintain and enhance the tree plantings where they have become an integral part of the golf course design. The plan will determine which trees are integral to the playability and strategy of the course and those which may adversely impact the course. The management of our urban forest is an important task. Identifying, quantifying, and understanding the tree population is crucial to determining a comprehensive, long term approach to its well being. Trees will generally live longer and gradually require less intensive care with scheduled maintenance. The tree inventory is an integral element of the comprehensive plan. The process follows three phases. The development of the Tree Management Plan at Pinehurst Country Club includes three phases. I INVENTORY II ANALYSIS III IMPLEMENTATION I INVENTORY The inventory is the foundation for formulating the plan. An inventory of trees provides detailed information for the manager. Inventory data must be systematically collected and stored for analysis. Managers can forecast maintenance and replacement needs and budget for tree-related expenditures based on this information. This data aids in developing long-range planning and design decisions such as new plantings, ensuring species diversification, and prioritizing maintenance actions. Tree inventory information can be input into a computer aided drafting program database and geographical information system (GIS) to build an integrated tree management plan and effectively maintain the installation’s tree resources. Trees vary considerably in life expectancy, growth habit, and maintenance requirements. It is important to record and maintain composite data on the various species found on the installation for the purpose of completing other requirements such as tree maintenance budgeting and personnel scheduling. A) Data Collection The first step in accomplishing a tree inventory is to systematically collect and store data. Tree species, location, size, and overall condition of the tree population are the primary items collected. It is imperative that consistency and accuracy of the tree data be maintained throughout the inventory phase. Individual tree locations can be determined by aerial photos, detailed ground measurements, Global Positioning Systems, or a combination of all. Each tree is recorded on a map and assigned a number for entry into the database. Individual trees are identified by common and botanical names and numbered sequentially. This helps to determine the overall composition of the installation’s tree population. B) Location Initially trees will be located and numbered by a hole-to-hole description. At a later date, tree locations will be mapped by GPS and placed on map program of the Lynx Irrigation Program. See attached sheets. C) Identification Trees will be identified by their type, age classification and current condition. See attached sheets D) Size Classification Tree trunk diameter is an indicator of the relative age of the tree. Collectively, this information provides insight into the maturity distribution for each species. Diameter is measured at 4-1/2 feet above the ground. 2
  • 3. E) Overall Condition Condition addresses the current state of the tree’s health, structural soundness, shape, and growth rate. Discoloration, decay, dieback, decreased internodal length, and/or disfigured or dead stems or roots are symptoms of poor condition. The overall health and condition of a tree is determined by analyzing root characteristics, trunk and branch structure, canopy, foliage, and any presence of disease and pests. EXCELLENT - trees have the best qualities of their species. They have excellent form and very minor maintenance problems. There are virtually no dead branches, deformities, or nutritional problems. They are in an acceptable location and can be expected to achieve a full mature shape and life expectancy. GOOD - trees are judged to be desirable and with proper maintenance can be returned to an excellent classification. They may be interfering with utility lines, planted in an overcrowded location, or have minor insect, pathogen, or nutritional deficiencies. FAIR - (Declining) trees have some or all of the following problems: large dead limbs with as much as half the tree already dead, large cavities in the trunk, major deformities, girdling roots, obvious insect, pathogen, or nutritional problems. Immediate maintenance and proper care may be able to save the tree. POOR - trees are in a very degraded condition with irreversible problems. They have over 50% dead branches, drastic deformities, and severe insect, pathogen, or nutritional problems. They will have to be removed as soon as possible. DEAD trees have over 90% dead branches and have completely succumbed to insects, pathogens, or nutritional deficiencies. Removal is required. II ANALYSIS The tree inventory will be used in prioritizing maintenance tasks. Overall maintenance requirements will be determined by observing the condition of the trunk, large branches, and canopy of each tree, as well as the tree’s location relative to the course design. These conditions may necessitate pruning to maintain line of sight and avoid poor turf conditions. Tree condition data should be used to develop cost-effective pruning and removal schedules. The following areas contribute to establishing a viable maintenance program: Species diversification Approximate age and life expectancy Removal and pruning requirements A) Species Diversification In general, no genus and species (e.g., Quercus rubra) should account for more that 10% of the total tree population. Further, no single genus (e.g., Quercus) should comprise more than 30% of the total tree population. Having a large concentration of one species could lead to a large number of trees being lost if affected by insect or disease pathogens; an entire species of trees could be at risk. B) Approximate Age and Life Expectancy Tree species have different life expectancies and different diameters, heights, and crown spreads at maturity. It is, therefore, more useful to make general classifications of age such as young, mature, and over mature rather than actual years. The diameter of a tree measured at 4-1/2 feet above the ground is the standard used to classify tree age. YOUNG trees are 6 inches or less in diameter MATURE trees are 6 to 24 inches in diameter OVER MATURE trees are greater than 24 inches in diameter The ideal age distribution of a species in the urban forest, and for the population as a whole, is 20% young, 60% mature, and 20% over mature. A high percentage of over mature trees could necessitate a massive, expensive removal and replanting program. An appropriate age mixture can be achieved by removing and replanting a 3
  • 4. certain percentage of trees each year. Removals should never exceed plantings. Trees should not be removed based solely on age, but condition rating and species type will be considered. C) Removal and Pruning Requirements Trees lose vigor and die from natural causes such as disease and insect pathogens, weather conditions, and from physical injury due to vehicles, vandalism, poisoning, and root disturbance. Trees should be removed to • Reduce safety risks to persons or property • To improve appearance/playability Tree maintenance requirements can be categorized as follows: HIGH-PRIORITY REMOVAL trees should be removed as soon as possible as their location and/or condition present risks to persons or property. LOW-PRIORITY REMOVAL trees should be scheduled and accomplished when resources are available. IMMEDIATE PRUNING trees present safety risks to persons or property. They may have dangerous broken branches and large deadwood. Pruning should be accomplished as soon as possible, along with a close examination for decay or severe dieback. If these conditions exist, the tree should be removed. HIGH-PRIORITY PRUNING trees should be attended to as soon as scheduling will allow, starting with those presenting the greatest safety risks. They have broken branches and areas of deadwood but do not present an immediate safety hazard to persons or property. They should also be examined closely during trimming operations for signs of decay or severe dieback and removed if necessary. ROUTINE PRUNING requires the removal of dead, dying, diseased, or obviously weak, heavy, or hazardous branches, and deadwood. Routine, ongoing pruning should be scheduled and programmed to ensure all tree pruning is accomplished on a minimum cycle of five to seven years. It is important to remember that low priority problems can become high priority if they are neglected for an extended period of time. Thinning of tree canopies to reduce crossing or unnecessary branches should be accomplished routinely. This reduces the potential for wind-induced branch breakage and increases sunlight and air circulation within the crown. Thinning of tree canopies substantially reduces the incidence of insect and disease related problems. All pruning should be completed based on ANSI A300 standard and approved by the clubs arborist. There should never be any more than 25 % reduction in foliage in any one year. III IMPLEMENTATION A) Mulching Probably the most neglected tree care practice is mulching. Placing 4 inches of organic mulch over the entire root system reduces environmental stress, conserves moisture, minimizes mechanical damage from mowers and weed eaters, and reduces nutrient competition from weeds and turf. Although any organic matter can be used as mulch, shredded leaves, pine straw, peat moss, and shredded or composted tree bark and chips are the most widely accepted amendments. Care must be taken to ensure that a 4 inch wide ring around the tree trunk is maintained clear of mulch to guard against decay and other problems associated with excessive moisture. B) Monitoring Monitoring insect and disease infestations by regular inspections and responsive treatment will help to maintain the health and vitality of the trees. A certified arborist can take steps to prevent or reduce the severity of future disease, insect, and other pathogenic problems through periodic inspections (at least once a year). By closely observing new leaves or buds, leaf size, twig growth, and crown dieback, a treatment can be recommended to prevent major problems from affecting the tree population. Signs of poor tree health include trunk decay, loose bark, and deformed growths. 4
  • 5. C) Preventative Maintenance Preventative maintenance and treatment for known regional pests will protect tree investments. Consult with local certified arborists and use only licensed and experienced pest management professionals when treatment is required. D) Planting 1. Generally, on a young tree, the uppermost structural roots (two or more) should be within the top 1 to 3 inches of the soil surface, measured 3 to 4 inches from the trunk. As a tree matures, roots thicken faster on the top side, effectively reducing the amount of soil above the structural roots and forming the root flare. Special situations requiring exceptions to this general guideline include the following: • Some species may develop more strongly descending root systems; therefore, the structural roots may have to be located nearer the trunk. On landscape sites with poorly drained soil, the roots may need to be even shallower for adequate survival. Structural roots may need to be at, or slightly above, the surrounding grade under extreme conditions. • In some species, the roots regenerated after transplanting can grow back toward the trunk and become girdling roots. Initial research shows that very little soil over the structural roots could be problematic. Celtis occidentalis (hackberry), Fraxinus pennsylvanica (green ash), Acer rubrum (red maple), Tilia cordata (littleleaf linden), Populus spp. (poplars), and Malus spp. (crabapples) are species for which this is known to be a problem. Other species with aggressive root systems may also exhibit this tendency. 2. Checking root depth can be done in the nursery before digging (preferred), or container root ball just prior to planting. Presence of a visible root flare is a good indicator that the structural roots are just below the soil surface. However, on grafted trees, be careful not to confuse the swelling of the trunk below the graft union with the actual root flare. A gap around the trunk at the soil line is a sure sign that the first roots are at least several inches below the soil surface. 3. If none of these easily recognized signs are present in the field, or if the root ball burlap and twine cover the base of the tree, a surveyor’s chaining pin or similar tool can be used to quickly and nondestructively probe for the roots. Probing approximately 3 to 4 inches away from the trunk will determine the true depth of the roots, rather than the depth of the enlarged root flare, if present. At least two roots (preferably more) should be located within 1 to 3 inches of the soil surface. 4. When root balls arrive on site, the depth of the structural roots should be checked before placing the tree in the planting hole. 5. Bud-grafted cultivars, and some seedling trees, are cut back during production. Evidence of the “dog leg” in the stem and of a change in bark texture should be approximately 1 to 2 inches above the soil surface for a young tree, with a maximum of 4 to 5 inches between the pruning wound and the uppermost structural roots. 6. If the structural roots have been located within 3 inches of the surface, the root ball should be planted with the surface no lower than the same level as existing grade. One to two inches higher usually is preferable to allow for settling and “pancaking” of the root ball. Unless conditions are extreme, do not plant so high that the cut ends of the structural roots at the edge of the root ball are above the surrounding grade. Planting the tree any higher may expose roots after minor erosion or contribute to surface root formation in the long run. 7. If the structural roots are found to be deeper than 3 inches below the root ball surface, the root ball and the planting depth will have to be adjusted. Elevate the root ball so that the structural roots are at the correct depth relative to surrounding grade. It is best to leave root balls intact until placed in the planting hole, rather than to unwrap them and strip the soil off the top before moving the root ball into the planting hole. Moving an unwrapped root ball may cause unnecessary damage. 8. If there is extra soil over the structural roots, it may be acceptable in some situations to leave the root ball intact, with the extra soil remaining above grade through the guarantee period. Some contractors prefer to leave the burlap, rope, and wire basket in place for a time to keep the root ball more stable and make it easier to straighten later, if needed. If the wrappings are not removed at planting time, the tree should be checked at the 5
  • 6. end of the guarantee period, and any remnants of the wrappings or excess soil remaining above grade should be removed. 9. Suddenly removing excess soil could be problematic for other reasons. The extra soil over the structural roots could be filled with fibrous roots which, if removed suddenly, could cause extra stress. There have been reports of cold or sunscald damage of the newly exposed tissue on trees when the extra soil was suddenly removed from the base of the trunk (this could actually be a portion of the original primary root [tap root], in some cases). Late-fall plantings may be the most susceptible to cold damage. Earlier plantings may have time to harden off normally. Thin-barked trees may be most susceptible to sun injury. 10. Until this situation is more fully understood, exercise caution when removing soil and exposing tissue that has been below grade. Leaving the extra soil in place above grade to be removed slowly or erode away may help to protect sensitive trunk tissues. Mulch can be used to hide the protruding root ball. If the soil is removed, covering newly exposed tissue with organic mulch may help to protect it from sun and cold damage. A trunk wrap may provide some protection from the sun. This material should degrade within one year or must otherwise be removed from the tree in that time period. 11. Mulching is an excellent way to conserve soil moisture, reduce competition from other plants, and prevent lawn mower injury. Two inches of mulch is the appropriate depth for 2- to 3-inch-caliper trees. Later applications to “refresh” the mulch should not increase the depth. Keep the mulch away from the trunk. Avoid thick layers of mulch around the base of the tree (often called “volcano mulching”), as is far too often seen in landscapes. Do not pile the extra soil around the base of tree and use mulch to hide it—excess soil should be removed from the planting site. Avoid organic material that can mat down and create a hydrophobic layer. 12. There are many trees already planted in the landscape with the structural roots too deep. These trees are likely to have reduced vigor and shorter life spans if no remedial action is taken. For recently planted trees (less than two to three months of warm soil for root growth), the greatest long-term benefit will be achieved by replanting the tree at the proper depth. For partially established trees, the best remedial treatment may depend on several factors. Replanting a partially established tree will cause additional stress; therefore, the benefits of replanting such a tree must outweigh the risks. If the tree is in good health and growing vigorously, it may be best to do nothing. A tree that appears to be struggling may need to be replanted at the proper depth, as long as the tree is in good enough health to survive the additional stress of replanting. Do not waste money replanting trees that already show signs of serious decline. Trees on low-quality, poorly drained soils are more likely to need to be replanted than those on high-quality sites. 13. For larger, fully established trees, a practice being used regularly by arborists is a root collar excavation to remove the excess soil in contact with the trunk. Removal of this soil reduces the possibility of basal and collar rot diseases, and it improves aeration to the structural roots at lower depths. 14. Roots regenerated after planting originate mostly at the perimeter of the root ball and usually grow up to their natural depth closer to the surface. Do not expose these roots. When the structural roots moved with the tree are too deep, the newly generated roots sometimes have been observed to grow toward the trunk rather than away from the trunk, as is normal. Removing the soil near the trunk can expose these “misdirected” roots and allow their removal so that they do not become girding roots. The excavated soil is sometimes replaced with wellaerated mulch or gravel. 1. 2. 3. Trees To Avoid Planting Known safety hazard trees such as a cottonwood. Extensive root systems, fast growing and weak limbs can present problems above and below the golfer. Fruit and pod bearing trees on the golf course. These trees produce a lot of debris that can present hazards to golfers. Trees such as apples, plums and locusts. Seek out non-fruit or pod bearing varieties. Trees susceptible to disease, insects and other know problems in the area. Mountain Pine beetle, pine wilt, brown tortoise shell, ips, emerald ash borer, fire blight, witches broom can be problematic with our inventory of trees. 6
