Course Description: The course aims to expose students to literature in prose and verse in order to
help them understand its ideas and appreciate literary aesthetics, literary
techniques, diction, syntax, figurative language, imagery and symbol.
Teaching Objectives:
1. To enable students to understand general characteristics of literature in prose and
verse.
2. To enable students to analyze content, theme, figurative language, imagery and
symbol conveyed in prose and verse; as well as to enable students to understand literary
techniques, diction, syntax, and to appreciate literary aesthetics.
3. To enable students to express their understanding and appreciation of literary
texts.

characterization, point of view, setting, theme,

Additional Requirements:
1. Class attendance and participation are crucial requirements.
2. Always read texts before coming to class.
3. Late assignments are not accepted.
4. Cheating and plagiarism are not tolerated.

Course Syllabus Course Number: 417-222, Course Name: Literary Appreciation, 3(3-0-6) credits Second Semester, Academic Year 2010 Department of Western Languages, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Prince of Songkla University Instructor: Ms. Suraiya Sulaiman Group 1 & 2 Office No. 50324 Tel. 3025 Course Category: Required course for English major and minor B.A. Program in English Course Description: The course aims to expose students to literature in prose and verse in order to help them understand its ideas and appreciate literary aesthetics, literary techniques, diction, syntax, figurative language, imagery and symbol. Teaching Objectives: 1. To enable students to understand general characteristics of literature in prose and verse. 2. To enable students to analyze content, theme, figurative language, imagery and symbol conveyed in prose and verse; as well as to enable students to understand literary techniques, diction, syntax, and to appreciate literary aesthetics. 3. To enable students to express their understanding and appreciation of literary texts. Course Content & Learning Activities: Week Course Content Learning Activities 1-2 - Course introduction and objectives - Why study literature? - What is literature? - What is verse? - What is prose? - Types of prose and verse - Lecture - Group discussion - Power Point Presentation - Virtual Classroom 3-5 - General characteristics of verse (language, syntax, imagery, figurative language, symbol, irony, etc.) - Lecture - Group discussion - Power Point Presentation - Written exercises - Virtual Classroom 6-9 - Forms of verse (sound and rhythm) - Nursery rhyme, lyric, ballad, sonnet, free verse, blank verse - Lecture - Group discussion - Power Point Presentation - Written exercises - Virtual Classroom 10-12 - General characteristics of short story (plot, characterization, point of view, setting, theme, - Lecture - Group discussion
