The Cathkin Braes Country Park
Cathkin Braes Country Park covers a large area
in the south east of Glasgow.
It has a lot of history and is a familiar landmark
on the skyline. It reaches 200 metres above sea
level, the highest point in South Glasgow.
This is the view from the Cathkin Braes.

Springburn Park
The highest point in the North of the City of
Glasgow is Springburn Park on Balgrayhill. It is
364 feet above sea level. Springburn Park was
opened by Glasgow Corporation in 1892.
It has amazing views of Ben Lomond, the
Trossachs, the Kilpatrick, Campsie and Kilsyth
Hills, and the hills of Argyllshire. If the weather
is good, you can even see the peak of Goat Fell
on the Isle of Arran.

Bluevale and Whitevale Towers
This is the name of twin tower block flats which
are in Camlachie in the East of Glasgow. They
are 90.8 metres tall and have 30 floors. Glasgow
built a lot of these towers in the 1960’s. There
were a lot of towers like these in the Gorbals
where we live, but there are not many left now.
The tallest building ever to have stood in
Glasgow in the past was the Tait Tower in
Bellahouston Park.

and completed in 1969 and opened in 1971. It
cost £6 million.
The Red Road Flats are now in the process of
being demolished. There are pictures and
information about this building in the museum
called The People’s Palace, close to our school.

The Jeely Piece Song
We also learned a very famous Glasgow song
which is about tall buildings. It’s called the Jeely
Piece Song. It’s about children being hungry
because their mothers can’t throw sandwiches
out of windows of high rise flats. It’s great fun.
Here’s a picture of Mr. McCormick singing the
song.

8. The Seven Wonders of Our Region
I'm a sky scraper wean, I live on the ninteenth floor
But I'm no goin' oot tae play any more.
'Cause since we moved to oor new house I'm wastin' away
For I'm getting one meal less every day.
Chorus:
Oh ye canna fling pieces oot a twenty story flat
Seven hundred hungry weans will testify to that
If it's butter, cheese or jeely, if the bread is plain or pan
The odds against it reaching us is ninety-nine to one
On the first day my Maw flung oot a daud o' hovis broon
It came skitin' oot the windae and went up instead o' doon
Noo ev'ry twenty seven hours it comes back into sight
Cause my piece went intae orbit and became a satellite
On the next day my Maw flung me oot a piece again
It went up and hit a pilot in a fast, low flying plane
He scrapped it off his goggles, shouting through the intercom
The Clydeside Reds have got me wi' a breid 'n jelly bomb
On the third day my Maw tho't she would try another throw
The Salvation Army band was standin' doon below
'Onward Christian Soldiers' was the tune they should've played
But the Oompah man was playing piece 'n marmalade
Glossary
breid: bread
doon: down
hoose: house
jeely piece: bread
and jelly sandwich
oor: our
oot: out
piece: sandwich
wean: child
We've wrote awa' to Oxfam to try an' get some aid
We all joined together and have formed the Piece Brigade
We're gonna march to London tae demand our civil rights
Like nae more hooses over piece flinging height
