A READING FROM THE LETTER OF JAMES 3: 13—4: 3, 7–8A

Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your
good life that your works are done with gentleness born of
wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in
your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. Such
wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly,
unspiritual, devilish. For where there is envy and selfish
ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of
every kind. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then
peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good
fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a
harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who
make peace. Those conflicts and disputes among you,
where do they come from? Do they not come from your
cravings that are at war within you? You want something
and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet
something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes
and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. You
ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order
to spend what you get on your pleasures. Submit yourselves
therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from
you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.

A READING FROM THE GOSPEL OF MARK 9: 30-37

They went on from there and passed through Galilee. Jesus
did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his
disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is to be
betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and
three days after being killed, he will rise again.” But they
did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to
ask him. Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was
in the house he asked them, “What were you arguing about
on the way?” But they were silent, for on the way they had
argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat
down, called the twelve, and said to them, “Whoever wants
to be first must be last of all and servant of all.” Then he
took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in
his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one such
child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes
me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.”

7. Music Notes
Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) was a French organist
who was famous internationally as a concert artist in the
latter part of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He played no
fewer than 40 recitals during the St. Louis Exposition of
1904 on the instrument that is now located in the
Wanamaker store in Philadelphia, and for 30 years was
organist of the Paris church known as La Trinité. Guilmant
composed mainly organ music, including 8 sonatas which
are still performed regularly.
The 18th century English musician Maurice Greene
(1696-1755) was organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral and the
Chapel Royal in London and later professor at Cambridge
University. He composed a great deal of both sacred and
secular music, but his best known work is the wonderful
anthem “Lord, let me know mine end” which the St.
Barnabas’ Choir has sung often.

8. Robert Schumann (1810-1856) is not remembered for
organ music, but mainly for his songs (lieder) and
orchestral/other instrumental works. In fact, the four
Sketches were composed in 1845 for pedal-piano, an
instrument (a piano with foot pedals like the organ) that has
a curious sound to modern ears, though it resembles the
organ with its sustaining sonorities. The Sketches are most
often played now on the organ.
  

9. You are invited to attend our annual Thanksgiving Tea
Party in the Upper Hall on Saturday, September 29th,
between 2 and 4 PM.

Thanks to all for your support of the choir’s Bake Sale
yesterday. Over the course of the summer we have raised
over $1,000 from these sales which will be given to the
Organ Restoration Fund. One more “big” sale is planned
for early December and for that one we would like to solicit
donations of Christmas baked goods from the entire
congregation; but, more on that in due course!
For Thanksgiving
Fresh vegetables and fruits are needed, with which to
decorate the church for the Thanksgiving services.
Donations can be dropped off at the church on
Sat.urday, October 6th between 10:30 and 11:30 AM.
After Thanksgiving, the vegetables and fruits will be
donated to Street Haven at the Crossroads.
An important meeting
A Special Vestry Meeting has been called for Sunday,
October 7th, by the Church Wardens as part of the process
of finding a new Incumbent. The purpose of this Special
Vestry Meeting is to formally approve the proposed
members of the Selection Committee. The meeting will be
held immediately following the 10:30 AM Sunday service
and should take only 15 minutes. Please plan to attend."

The St. Barnabas Book Club has chosen the following
two books to discuss this fall: Cat’s Table by Michael
Ondaatje (Oct. 3rd) and Water for Elephants by Sarah
Gruen (Nov. 7th).

small area, especially designed for the younger saints,
which is located at the back of the church where you will
find a number of toys, books and craft supplies.
