                                  People

A READING FROM THE SECOND BOOK OF SAMUEL 23: 1-7
                                          read by Jan Booker
Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, son of Jesse,
the oracle of the man whom God exalted, the anointed of the God of
Jacob, the favourite of the Strong One of Israel: The spirit of the Lord
speaks through me, his word is upon my tongue. The God of Israel has
spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to me: One who rules over people
justly, ruling in the fear of God, is like the light of morning, like the sun
rising on a cloudless morning, gleaming from the rain on the grassy land.
Is
not my house like this with God? For he has made with me an everlasting
covenant, ordered in all things and secure. Will he not cause to prosper all
my help and my desire? But the godless are all like thorns that are thrown
away; for they cannot be picked up with the hand; to touch them one uses
an iron bar or the shaft of a spear. And they are entirely consumed in fire
on the spot. Amen.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.

PSALM 132: 1-13
    LORD, remember Da-vid, *
and all the hard-ships he en-dured;
How he swore an oath to the LORD *
and vowed a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:
“I will not come under the roof of my house, *
nor climb up in-to my bed;
I will not allow my eyes to sleep, *
nor let my eye-lids slumber;
Until I find a place for the LORD, *
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
“The ark We heard it was in E-phra-tah; *
we found it in the fields of Jea-rim.
Let us go to God’s dwell-ing place; *
let us fall upon our knees be-fore his foot-stool.”
Arise O LORD into your rest-ing place, *
you and the ark of your strength.
Let your priests be clothed with right-eous-ness; *
let your faithful peo-ple sing with joy.
For your servant David’s sake, *
do not turn away the face of your a-noint-ed.
The LORD has sworn an oath to Da-vid; *
in truth, he will not break it:
“A son the fruit of your bo-dy *
will I set up-on your throne.
If your children keep my covenant and my testimonies that I
shall teach them, *
their children will sit upon your throne for e-ver-more.”

Glory be to the Father and to the Son:
  and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit.
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be:
  world with-out end A-men.

A READING FROM THE REVELATION TO JOHN 1: 4b-8
                                    read by Dr. Virginia Wright
Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come,
and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus
Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the
kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his
blood, and made us to be a
kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and
dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds;
every eye will see him, even those who pierced
him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be.
Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and
who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.

Gospel Alleluia
Choir: Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia
All: Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia
Cantor: God the bless-ed and only Ru-ler: the King of
                kings and Lord of lords.
All: Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia
Gospeller: The Lord be with you.
All: And with thy spirit.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
                 according to John 18: 33-37.
All: Glory be to thee, O Lord.
Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked
him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on
your own, or did others tell you about me?” Pilate replied, “I am not a
Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to
me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this
world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be
fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my
kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus
answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I
came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the
truth listens to
my voice.”

The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Prayer over the Gifts: Eternal God, by your grace you have raised us
up and enthroned us with Christ in the heavenly realms. Receive all we
offer you this day, and lead us in those good works for which you have
created us. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

The Eucharist: God’s Spirit Transforms Our Gifts
“People of all ages and denominations who are baptized into Christ
are invited and encouraged to share in communion. If you will not be
receiving bread and wine, we would be pleased if you would join us
at the Lord’s Table for a blessing.”

for we all share in the one bread.

Music Notes
Johann Jakob Froberger (1616 – 1667) was a German Baroque
composer, keyboard virtuoso, and organist. He was among the
most famous composers of the era and influenced practically
every major composer in Europe by developing the genre of
keyboard suite and contributing greatly to the exchange of
musical traditions through his many travels. A cappriccio is
defined as a lively piece of music, short and free in form, like an
improvisation.
Adrian Batten (c. 1591 – c. 1637) was an English organist and
Anglican church composer. He was active during an important
period of English church music, between the Reformation and
the Civil War in the 1640s. During this period the liturgical
music of the first generations of Anglicans began to diverge
significantly from music on the European continent. Although
by no means comparable with the work of the greatest of his
contemporary English church musicians (William Byrd and
Orlando Gibbons, for example), Batten's music possesses
charms of its own. His music has been described as follows:
“ .... there is one virtue in Batten's sacred music which was
possessed by only a few composers, and that is his constant
endeavour to think of music as the servant of divine worship
and not as the central figure of that service.”
June Nixon is one of Australia’s best known musicians – an
organist, choir trainer and composer. She was appointed
organist of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne in 1973, and for
her long and distinguished service to church music she was
awarded an honorary doctorate by the Archbishop of
Canterbury in 1999.

Organ Prelude Capriccio - Johann Jacob Froberger The Gathering of God’s People Opening Hymn 378 “Crown him with many crowns” Service Music: David Hurd Greeting Collect for Purity p. 185 The Gloria p. 186 Collect of the Day: Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, our Lord and King, grant that the peoples of the earth, now divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his gentle and loving rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Children’s Focus led by Teresa Johnson The Story of God’s People A READING FROM THE SECOND BOOK OF SAMUEL 23: 1-7 read by Jan Booker Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, son of Jesse, the oracle of the man whom God exalted, the anointed of the God of
  • 3. Jacob, the favourite of the Strong One of Israel: The spirit of the Lord speaks through me, his word is upon my tongue. The God of Israel has spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to me: One who rules over people justly, ruling in the fear of God, is like the light of morning, like the sun rising on a cloudless morning, gleaming from the rain on the grassy land. Is not my house like this with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. Will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire? But the godless are all like thorns that are thrown away; for they cannot be picked up with the hand; to touch them one uses an iron bar or the shaft of a spear. And they are entirely consumed in fire on the spot. Amen. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People: Thanks be to God. PSALM 132: 1-13 LORD, remember Da-vid, * and all the hard-ships he en-dured; How he swore an oath to the LORD * and vowed a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob: “I will not come under the roof of my house, * nor climb up in-to my bed; I will not allow my eyes to sleep, * nor let my eye-lids slumber; Until I find a place for the LORD, * a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.” “The ark We heard it was in E-phra-tah; * we found it in the fields of Jea-rim. Let us go to God’s dwell-ing place; * let us fall upon our knees be-fore his foot-stool.” Arise O LORD into your rest-ing place, * you and the ark of your strength. Let your priests be clothed with right-eous-ness; * let your faithful peo-ple sing with joy.
  • 4. For your servant David’s sake, * do not turn away the face of your a-noint-ed. The LORD has sworn an oath to Da-vid; * in truth, he will not break it: “A son the fruit of your bo-dy * will I set up-on your throne. If your children keep my covenant and my testimonies that I shall teach them, * their children will sit upon your throne for e-ver-more.” Glory be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: world with-out end A-men. A READING FROM THE REVELATION TO JOHN 1: 4b-8 read by Dr. Virginia Wright Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People: Thanks be to God. Gospel Alleluia Choir: Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia All: Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia
  • 5. Cantor: God the bless-ed and only Ru-ler: the King of kings and Lord of lords. All: Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia Gospeller: The Lord be with you. All: And with thy spirit. Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John 18: 33-37. All: Glory be to thee, O Lord. Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ.
