Nicknames: Giraffa Cameleopardalis,
and African Ruminant Animal
Giraffe Necks can grow up to 7 feet tall
and have 7 bones, like human necks!
Giraffes have 4 stomachs
Too pee, a giraffe lifts its tail and widens
its back legs
Giraffes are the tallest animal

3. Where Do They Live???
• Giraffes live in the open savannah south
of the Sahara Dessert
• Giraffes form herds of giraffes that can
grow up to 3-70 giraffes!
• Giraffes sleep with their legs tucked and
their necks upright

4. What Do They Eat???
• Giraffes eat acacia leaves, wild apricot,
mimosa, seedpods, fruit, twigs, and any
other types of leaves
• A giraffe’s favorite food is acacia leaves
• Giraffes don’t need to drink much water because
most of the water comes from the leaves the eat
• Giraffes chew bones to keep their teeth healthy

5. Giraffe Defenses
• A well-aimed kick can rip a lion’s head off.
This is called a “ chop kick”.
• A giraffe’s hoof is 6 inches wide. That is half
of a foot!
• Giraffes live in groups to help each other
protect the younger giraffes
• Giraffes can run 35 miles per hour if they

• Baby Giraffes are called calves
• Calves drop 5 feet at birth
• Calves can stand 10 minutes after
birth
• Calves weigh 100-200 pounds at
birth and are 6 feet tall

century!!!!!!
• African people have hunted giraffes for their
meat, skin, and bones

• The name giraffe comes from the Arabic
word “Zafarah”.
• A giraffe’s heart is weighs 25 pounds
• A giraffe’s heart is 2 feet long. That is about
half of me!!
• A giraffe’s tongue is 18-20 inches long!
