1. Popular IELTS Writing Topics for General Training Module Task 1
Many candidates of the International English Language Testing System or the IELTS know that there
are two different kinds of modules in the IELTS – the Academic and the General Training modules. Each
module differs from the content of their reading and writing sections. Furthermore, the listening and the
speaking sections are just the same. The main difference of the two modules is the level of difficulty that
they have in the sections mentioned. Let us see what challenge the General Training Module Task 1 has
for its candidates.
IELTS Writing Task 1 for General Training Module
The task 1 asks the candidate to write a letter based on a specific task given. The context and the
purpose of the letter will solely base on the demand stated in the task. To further understand this, these

You live in a room in college which you share with another student. You find it very difficult to
work there because he or she always has friends visiting. They have parties in the room and sometimes
borrow your things without asking you.
Write a letter to the Accommodation Officer at the college and ask for a new room next term. You
would prefer a single room. Explain your reasons.
You should write at least 150 words.
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my disappointment with my current roommate; hence, I am
requesting to be transferred to another room in the next semester.
The problem is that I cannot focus on studying in my room as my roommate keeps bringing people
into our unit. He also holds parties which last until the wee hours in the morning. Additionally, he
uses my things without even asking for my approval.
This situation is unacceptable. The finals are coming and it is important for me to study hard for
that. I will be very thankful if you could help me find another room for the next semester. It will be
very convenient if I can have the room to myself.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Raymond Smith

You are going on a short training course at a college in Sydney, Australia. You need somewhere
to live while you are there. Write a letter to the accommodation officer at the college. In your letter:
- explain your situation
- describe the accommodation you require
- say when you will need it
Write at least 150 words.
You do NOT need to write any address.
Dear Mr.Lancaster,
I am writing this letter in connection with my training course happening at your college in Sydney. I
will be there for three weeks starting July 2nd to July 23rd. I am hoping that you will assist me in
finding an accommodation during my three-week stay.
Compared with the other participants, I am a little older; hence, it would be very convenient if you
could help me find an apartment near the college. Walking to and from the campus would be a very
good idea for me. All I need in the apartment is a TV, an internet connection, a bed, a desk, a small
kitchen and a bath. My budget is around $1,500.
I will be arriving on the first of July, so I hope the apartment will already be available on that day.
Please let me know if you have found any or if you have anything to suggest, please contact me
right away.
Sincerely,
John Brown

Last month you had a holiday overseas where you stayed with some friends. They have just sent
you some photos of your holiday.
Write a letter to your friends. In your letter:
-thank them for the photos and for the holiday
-explain why you didn't write earlier
-invite them to come and stay with you
Write at least 150 words.
Dear Melvin,
Thank you very much for the letter and photos you have sent from Cambodia. Sorry for the late
response as I was in a business trip and I just arrived home today.
The photos brought back so much memories the last time we were on a holiday together. I felt
really comfortable having to travel with you. You are a very good friend to me. I miss the times
when we spent so much time looking for good food, sights, shopping and a day filled with
laughter.
Here’s a suggestion. Why don’t you spend your next vacation here in the Philippines? The
weather is great and I am pretty sure you will enjoy the local delicacies and the sights here. We
could go to famous spots. I would be thrilled to have you here.
Again, thank you for the pictures you mailed. I am looking forward to seeing you soon.
Warm wishes,
Lisa
