Human capital is the knowledge and skill, embodied in an individual as a result of education, training, and experience, that makes him or her more productive. The graph shows the rate of return to human capital at different stages in the life cycle. All else equal, the return to a dollar of investment made when a person is young is higher than the return to the same dollar amount made at a later age. Early investments generate returns over a longer time horizon, and also raise the productivity of later investments: learning begets learning, and skills acquired early facilitate later learning.
