How does it affect your body and mind?
What is Nutrition?
 Nutrition is the scientific study of food and drink.


 Think of nutrition as describing what makes up food
  or drink.
Why are nutrients important to
you?
 Nutrients help your body work its best every day.


 Nutrients help your brain perform its best!

How do I know what foods have
the best nutrients in them?
 All food items should contain a nutrition label on the
 package.

It should look something

What is sodium?
 Sodium is a mineral found in many foods.


 Salt is the main source of sodium in many foods.
Effects of too much sodium
 Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure.
 This will make your heart work harder to keep up with
 your body.

 You should only eat 2,300 mg or less of sodium per day.
Saturated fat? What is that?
 Saturated fat is the “bad” fat.


 It is more likely to stick to all of your organs and cause
  problems in your body.
Is all fat bad for me?
 No!!
 Unsaturated fat is the “good” fat.


 Check the nutrition label to see what fat is in your
  snacks.
How much saturated fat is ok to
eat?
 You should only eat or drink 16 – 20 grams of saturated
 fat per day.

What is the best choice?
 Always try to pick foods that are natural, and not man-
 made.

 Fruits and vegetables are always great choices for your
 snack.
Answer these questions on a sheet
of paper to turn in to your P.E.
teacher.
1.) What is the “bad” fat? Saturated or Unsaturated

2.) What would be the healthier food choice, hot fries or
an apple?

Nutrition

  • 1. What is in the food you eat during snack time? How does it affect your body and mind?
  • 2. What is Nutrition?  Nutrition is the scientific study of food and drink.  Think of nutrition as describing what makes up food or drink.
  • 3. Why are nutrients important to you?  Nutrients help your body work its best every day.  Nutrients help your brain perform its best!
  • 4. Examples of foods high in nutrients Apples Grapes Yogurt
  • 5. How do I know what foods have the best nutrients in them?  All food items should contain a nutrition label on the package. It should look something like this
  • 6. What is sodium?  Sodium is a mineral found in many foods.  Salt is the main source of sodium in many foods.
  • 7. Effects of too much sodium  Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure.  This will make your heart work harder to keep up with your body.  You should only eat 2,300 mg or less of sodium per day.
  • 8. Saturated fat? What is that?  Saturated fat is the “bad” fat.  It is more likely to stick to all of your organs and cause problems in your body.
  • 9. Is all fat bad for me?  No!!  Unsaturated fat is the “good” fat.  Check the nutrition label to see what fat is in your snacks.
  • 10. How much saturated fat is ok to eat?  You should only eat or drink 16 – 20 grams of saturated fat per day.
  • 11. School snacks at GSES 1 gram of Saturated Fat 200 mg of Sodium 0 grams of Saturated fat 2 mg of Sodium
  • 12. School snacks at GSES 1.5 grams of Saturated Fat 300 mg of Sodium 0 grams of Saturated fat 2 mg of Sodium
  • 13. What is the best choice?  Always try to pick foods that are natural, and not man- made.  Fruits and vegetables are always great choices for your snack.
  • 14. Answer these questions on a sheet of paper to turn in to your P.E. teacher. 1.) What is the “bad” fat? Saturated or Unsaturated 2.) What would be the healthier food choice, hot fries or an apple? 3.) What would be the healthier food choice, Doritos or grapes?
