12. 1 CORINTHIANS 10: 1-5
For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers
and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud
and that they all passed through the sea.
They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the
sea.
They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same
spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that
accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them;
their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

14. NUMBERS 14: 1-5
That night all the members of the community
raised their voices and wept aloud.
All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and
Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If
only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness!
Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to
let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children
will be taken as plunder. Wouldnʼt it be better
for us to go back to Egypt?”
And they said to each other, “We should choose
a leader and go back to Egypt.”

15. Numbers tells a story that
should never have happened,
a story that warns against the
rejection of God's plans.
Nonetheless, the story reveals
that God remains faithful to his
gracious promise, even when
his people neglect the means
and aims of grace.

21. NUMBERS 14: 20-23
The LORD replied, “I have forgiven them, as you
asked.
Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as
the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth, not one
of those who saw my glory and the signs I
performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who
disobeyed me and tested me ten times— not one
of them will ever see the land I promised on oath
to their ancestors.
No one who has treated me with contempt will
ever see it.

Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and
they went into the Desert of Shur. For three
days they traveled in the desert without finding
water. When they came to Marah, they could
not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is
why the place is called Marah.) So the people
grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are
we to drink?”
Then Moses cried out to the LORD, and the
LORD showed him a piece of wood. He threw it
into the water, and the water became fit to drink

29. NUMBERS 14: 26-35
The LORD said to Moses and Aaron: “How long will this
wicked community grumble against me? I have heard
the complaints of these grumbling Israelites. So tell
them, ʻAs surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to
you the very thing I heard you say: In this wilderness
your bodies will fall—every one of you twenty years old
or more who was counted in the census and who has
grumbled against me. Not one of you will enter the
land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home,
except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
As for your children that you said would be taken as
plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have
rejected.

30. NUMBERS 14: 26-35
But as for you, your bodies will fall in this wilderness.
Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,
suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your
bodies lies in the wilderness. For forty years—one year
for each of the forty days you explored the land—you will
suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me
against you.ʼ I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will surely
do these things to this whole wicked community, which
has banded together against me. They will meet their end
in this wilderness; here they will die.”

31. PHILIPPIANS 2: 14-16
Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you
may become blameless and pure, “children of God
without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”
Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as
you hold firmly to the word of life.
