Hypnotic Really Really Wanting to Change
1. Why
"wanting it to work"
is helpful
BUT
not sufficient
(c) 2011 Steve Roh
2. Ever heard of Chef Gordon Ramsay and his
show "Kitchen Nightmares"? He goes
around the country trying to help troubled
restaurant businesses.
In every restaurant he
visits, the owner sincerely
wants to get help and
wants to succeed.
3. curious observation #1:
a strong desire for
"a change to happen"
does not =
willingness and acceptance of a need
"to change"
4. Hapless Restaurant Owner: "Chef Ramsay, please fix
our restaurant! For some reason, we are failing. "
Ramsay: "Hmm... stop serving microwaved frozen
food, remove the dead flies from your dining area,
and update your menu."
H.R.O.: "Impossible! We've had that menu since
1979, our customers love it! And those flies don't
bother anybody..."
5. curious observation #2:
words are important,
they provide a window into the mindset of the speaker.
consider the phrase: "wanting it to work"
What is "It"? something external,
like magical hypnotic words, or a pill, or a patch.
indicates passivity and external "locus of control"
"I really hope Chef Ramsay will fix my restaurant for me.
I really want it to work!"
6. curious observation #3:
often (not always),
the more a person insists they
"really want to change"...
the more they actually fear change,
which becomes clear in hypnosis,
because the true self can be more apparent,
just like when "the pressure's on",
a person's true character is revealed
7. needing to convince yourself or others:
"I really really want to change, I mean it!" can be
a red flag. If you meant it, there'd be no need to
try to convince yourself or anyone else.
thinking that desperation will make the
difference, is an indication of a tendency to rely
on ineffective strategy.
"Immature strategy is the cause of grief"
- Miyamoto Musashi, 1645
8. another reason
"really wanting it to work"
should not be the focus
it gives the hypnotist an all-too-easy excuse for failure:
"Oh, you must not have really wanted it to work"
...blaming the client by questioning their motivation.
I believe that as the supposed professional, the hypnotist is
responsible for preventing non-serious, half-hearted, or
unmotivated people from becoming clients in the first place!
9. so what really matters?
●overall emotional maturity
○ chronological age irrelevant (older does not = wiser)
●self-awareness
○ especially awareness of self-deception (denial)
