Your Questions About Etfs List

Daniel asks…

How do I download a list of 50 stock quotes from Yahoo to Excel?
I have a spreadsheet that has about 50 ETFs and mutual funds listed by symbol across the top
of the page. Is there a way to put those same ticker symbols into yahoo so that it will generate
the closing price for each of those symbols across the page, instead of manually entering each
quote by hand?

Steve Winston answers:

I don't use Excel, but the approach I'm about to describe works with the spreadsheet I use so I
think it should work with Excel also.

You could set up a portfolio in Yahoo Finance (you'll need to get an ID and log in to do that),
then in the upper right part of the portfolio view page, there's a small link to "download
spreadsheet" which will download a file (in .csv format) with the list of symbols, quotes, and the
other information on the portfolio page.

That is going to have the symbols in the far left column with one row per symbol. If you have the
symbols across the top, you might need another spreadsheet to rearrange the cells the way you
need them. That shouldn't take long to set up and then will be quick to use - just download the
file from Yahoo, cut and paste the data into the spreadsheet that reorders the fields, then cut
and paste the values from that into the spreadsheet where you want them. Not a single step,

                                                                                             1/9
but still way faster (and perhaps more accurate) than entering 50 quotes manually.

Betty asks…

Is there a website that will allow me to see what companies are
held by what specific ETFs, mutual funds, etc?
For example, if I were to want to find out what funds held Visa, is there a site where I could type
in the company name and/or ticker symbol, and the search results would provide me a list of
the funds and/or ETFs that hold that stock?

I hope I explained this correctly.

Steve Winston answers:

You can go to Yahoo Finance and/or MSN Money, and in the ETF section, they will list the
holdings of most ETFs but there is no tracking by security back to the ETF

Most analysts that are looking for specific securities have to maintain their own data bases to

                                                                                             2/9
track particular securities.

ETF's can change their security positions without reporting any changes so that it would be next
to impossible to track by individual securities.

Tracking individual securities is not a high priority for either regular investors or professionals,
There is little or no importance tracking such.

Mary asks…

If you want to trade indexes what are the best stocks/etfs/options?
I'd like to start trading on the indexes. Can anyone recommend what is best to go with? I know
about SPY and QQQQ, but can anyone list others which are good to invest in?

Is it better to trade indexes because it's a natural basket of investments over individual
investments? Is it better to trade index options or etfs?

Steve Winston answers:

                                                                                                 3/9
Here is a list of ETFs for the 3 major indexes:

Dow Jones - DIA
NASDAQ - QQQ
SP500 - SPY

You can trade these ETFs directly or trade their options. You could also buy the ETFs and then
write their out of the money calls in order to win when its sideways and upwards while providing
some downside protection. This is known as a covered call.

Investing in an index over the long term is definitely better than betting on individual stocks that
exposes you to all 3 market risks; Systemic Risk, Secondary Risk and Idiosyncratic Risk.
Investing in an index will expose you only to Systemic Risk, which is far less risky than stock
picking.

Joseph asks…

Where can I find a daily complete list of the opening prices in
column form of all ETFs Exchange Traded Fund?
I have created an excel spreadsheet for tracking each ETFs (Exchange Trading Funds)
performance. One piece of data that I enter for each trading day is the opening prices for ETFs.
Presently I look up the individual opening price through my brokerage account, but this is
extremely time consuming. I download the percentage of return performance (YTD year-to-date,
1 minth, 3 month, 1 year and 3 year) presently from Morningstar and IBD (Investors Business
Daily) but this does not give me the daily opening price. Thank you.

                                                                                               4/9
Steve Winston answers:

MSN has an add-in for Excel that allows direct downloads to a spreadsheet. It's free and should
allow you to solve your problem.

Jenny asks…

ETFs, where can I find them?
Does anyone know where I can find a list of ETFs? There were a few I wanted to look into but I
lost my sheet of paper with the ticker symbols. Thanks.

                                                                                          5/9
Steve Winston answers:

Try this as a start:
www.etfzone.com

Lisa asks…

Does anybody know if there are ETFs (exchange-traded funds) that
focus on video game vendors?
If there are such ETFs, please provide list of ticker symbols. Thanks.

Steve Winston answers:

No there are not. And there never will be.

--J.

                                                                         6/9
Sharon asks…

Please help me compile a list of investment products: CD's,
stocks, ect?
I am compiling a very balanced investment portfolio, what are the types of investment options i
should include other than:
stocks, options, CD's, mutual funds, etfs?
Are there any nontraditional ways to add to a portfolio much like peer to peer lending?
Thanks for your creative ideas!

Steve Winston answers:

It really comes down to how much time you want to spend on research.

Mutual funds / ETFs and CD's take very little research to be Ok options.
Stocks are a bit more, and options are particularly crazy.
Commodities from corn to oil to gold are all options too. Each of which have several different
ways to own from actually physically owning them to certs to stocks that deal in the item.

                                                                                            7/9
Without research, more risky investing is really just speculation. You could win, you could lose,
on average you'll probably follow the market. But as an individual there are no guarantees if you
go it alone.

Check out the fool if you want to do some investigation:

http://www.fool.com

or just use Caps to figure out what you should invest in.
