Your Questions About Stocks Today

Ken asks…

Who is selling stocks today after a 5% plunge in the Dow?
What's your strategy buy high and sell low?
Flswamp, why do you feel a need to insult me every time I ask a question?

You have no idea what kind if investor I am. So go screw youself.

Steve Winston answers:

Today I bought stocks that pay dividends near 5%, with enough earnings to back them up
through a downturn. Way better than the fraction a % savings pays.

I don't care if they go down for awhile. I've got 20 years until I need to sell them.

I wonder if part of the drop isn't fund managers panicking because we are near the end of a
quarter. It could be window dressing so they can report they have cash in a down market.

                                                                                          1/8
Carol asks…

Why are all the major health care stocks down today? Shouldn't
they be up on the good news of Brown's election?
Merck: Down 1.6%
Glaxo: Down .52%
Pfizer: Down .3%

And the insurance stocks, as measured by an EFT, are down 1.75% today.

Can some Republican explain why Wall St. thinks Brown's election will be bad for the health
care and insurance industries?

Steve Winston answers:

Because Brown won't be doing anything to change the status quo and the current situation
(regardless if you look at it from the Dem or Rep perspective) is well-known to be broken.

                                                                                             2/8
George asks…

Why did bill gates sell MSFT stocks today?
I read he sold 1M of his MSFT shares at >$20. Is he planning to buy Yahoo? You can speculate
on the note. I will give Best answer to the most credible argument.

Steve Winston answers:

When you have someone who owns so many shares (748M), it's hard to know. It's kind of like a
bank account to them.

This isn't his first sale by a longshot. However, Bill Gates is worth $40 Bllion and his MSFT
shares are worth ~15 Billion: 37% of his net worth.Perhaps he is just diversifying.

Truth is, it probably doesn't mean much at all.

                                                                                                3/8
Sharon asks…

I was discusing car stocks today and hear some one say a car
stock was doing well beacause of a sertan company?
I think it was toyota that was doing well, can some on help me?

Steve Winston answers:

You are correct---Toyota is in the news today due the finding that the beleaguered auto maker
has been galloping through the streets of China while also doing really well in its homeland of
Japan.

I'm a Toy fan and believe the company will easily weather the storm of the moment and again
prevail as a global auto leader. Ford will enjoy increased market share but there's plenty of
room for both in an ever expanding industrialized world.

Nancy asks…

Can you buy stocks today and sell it tomorrow w/o a violation as a
day trader?
I'm wondering if i can sell stocks i bought yesterday w/o being in violation as a day trader

Steve Winston answers:

Sure. If you have $25,000 in your account or if you do it less that a certain number of times in a
given period. I forget the exact numbers.

Thomas asks…

                                                                                               5/8
Why did stocks go up today after news of govt bailouts?
I don't really understand the stock market as much as I should. I am curious, what specifically is
the reason that stocks went up today after news of the government bail outs of AIG, etc.?

Steve Winston answers:

So far, the gov is guaranteeing that you can't lose money if you are a bank or broker. Individuals
who buy stocks still can lose money.

I have 2000+ posts that will prob teach you everything you need to know about investing - at
least the basics and some history.

You'll have to add me to your "fans" list to see my posts.

Helen asks…

                                                                                            6/8
Why were so many people buying gold mining stocks today?
dollar down? When do they sell their gold stock?

Steve Winston answers:

For the right mining company, buying their stock is a way to play the rise in gold, silver, etc.

When the cost per ounce from extraction to finished product, which does not usually vary, is
much lower than the market price per ounce, the difference between the two is pure profit.

Linda asks…

Stocks Today. What are the top 10 you would buy and why?
So I'm going to buy some stocks today. Since its my first time buying stocks, I want to make a
good choice. I'm not really able to understand which ones are good and not because recently

                                                                                               7/8
most of them have been going down so could you help me. Please and thank you!!!

                                   Steve Winston answers:

Buy the book "The Successful Investor" by William O'Neil and read it over and over until you
understand it. Otherwise you are not ready to be investing. You won't know how much and
when to get into certain positions, when to take profits or add more, and when to get out. You
might get lucky, but chances are you will eventually lose, and lose big. The top ten I'd buy now
are: CHK, JOYG, POT, RIO, FCX, AEM, V(when it comes out) ETF's: USO, GLD, EWZ
