Everyone knows the name Google. Whether young or
old, computer smart or not, this name will pop up in
any conversation about computers. Google has made
some very impressive milestones of its time and
continues to grow rapidly every day.

4. • Beginning in 1996, Stanford University
graduate students Larry Page and Sergey
Brin built a search engine called “BackRub”
that used links to determine the importance of
individual web pages. By 1998 they had
formalized their work, creating the company you
know today as Google.

5. BackRub operates on Stanford servers for more than a
year—eventually taking up too much bandwidth to
suit the university.

Larry and Sergey decide that the BackRub search
engine needs a new name. After some brainstorming,
they go with Google—a play on the word “googol,” a

amount of information on the web.

should be. This process of seeking patterns in large
amounts of text is called "statistical machine translation".
Since the translations are generated by machines, not all
translation will be perfect. The more human-translated
documents that Google Translate can analyze in a specific
language, the better the translation quality will be. This is
why translation accuracy will sometimes vary across
languages.
