Grade 8: Math Course 3              STUDENT FRIENDLY VERSION
Ch 9-1 A Literal Equations
Prerequisite Content:
Solve equations using the order of operations.
Solve and graph one- and two-step equations in one variable.
Use exponents and square roots.
Learning Goal:
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to solve literal equations for a specified
variable.

Score 4.0    So this is what I had to learn this for! Without help, I can solve a literal equation
             for any variable and use that equation to solve a real-life problemlike finding out
             how much principal someone invested in a bank, or what height a cylinder is.
             Score 3.5 Now that I’m so good at literal equations, I can solve a literal
                           equation for any or all of the variables, and recognize that these
                           equations are all equivalent to one another.
Score 3.0    I’m proud to say I can solve every literal equation problem correctly without help
             even if I have to do many steps with addition/subtraction,
             multiplication/division, fractions, exponents/square roots, and even
             parentheses.
             Score 2.5 I can get the right answer without help if I only have to do one step,
                           but if I have to do more than one thing to solve the problem, I might
                           make a mistake part way through or get stuck and forget what I
                           should do next, especially on harder problems with fractions,
                           exponents, square roots, or parentheses.
Score 2.0    I know what I am supposed to do, and I can begin without help. But once, I start,
             I sometimes get lost and make mistakes such as, multiply when I should divide,
             or add a variable to one side of the equation, but not the other side of the equal
             sign. I sometimes do the operations in the wrong order.
             Score 1.5 I can solve a problem, with help, if all I have to do is add or subtract
                           a variable from both sides first, and then multiply or divide a
                           variable in order to isolate the variable I need to solve for.
Score 1.0    I can solve a simple problem if all I have to do is divide, multiply, add or subtract
             a variable from both sides of the equation, as long as I have help.
             Score 0.5 I know which letter needs to be alone on one side of the equal sign
                           (which variable to isolate).
Score 0.0    I do not know where to begin, and all explanations just sound like another
             language. What happened to all the numbers? What am I supposed to do with
             all those letters?

Score 4.0    In addition to Score 3.0 performance, in-depth inferences and applications that
             go beyond what was taught, such as
             The student can correctly solve a literal equation for the specified variable(s),
             and solve a real-life problem with a numeric solution using the equation
             solution.
             Score 3.5 The student can correctly identify equivalent literal equations
                           solved for various specified variables.
Score 3.0    While engaged in solving literal equations tasks, the student demonstrates an
             ability to
             correctly solve for the specified variable in problems that include one or all of
             the following parameters: parentheses, fractions, exponents of 2, multiplication
             and/or division, and addition and/or subtraction.
             The student exhibits no major errors or omissions.
             Score 2.5 The student can, without help, partially solve for the specified
                           variable in multi-step equations that include one or all of the
                           following parameters: parentheses, fractions, exponents of 2,
                           multiplication and/or division, and addition and/or subtraction; and
                           can, without help, successfully solve a literal equation for a specified
                           variable if only one step is required to reach the solution.
Score 2.0    No major errors or omissions regarding the simpler details and processes, such
             as
             without help, the student can begin to solve for a specified variable, but will
             make a common error(s) preventing a correct solution, such as: not following
             the reverse order of operations, not performing an operation on both sides of
             the equation, performing the wrong operation(s) on the correct variable(s),
             and/or performing the correct operation on the incorrect variable(s).
             However, the student exhibits major errors or omissions with Score 3.0
elements.
            Score 1.5    The student with help can solve a two-step equation involving
                         addition and/or subtraction and multiplication and/or division.
Score 1.0   With help, a partial understanding of some of the Score 2.0 elements and some
            of the Score 3.0 elements.
            The student with help can solve a one-step literal equation.
            Score 0.5 The student can identify the specified variable.
Score 0.0   Even with help, no understanding or skill demonstrated.

Literal Equations Marzano Specific Rubric

  • 1. Grade 8: Math Course 3 STUDENT FRIENDLY VERSION Ch 9-1 A Literal Equations Prerequisite Content: Solve equations using the order of operations. Solve and graph one- and two-step equations in one variable. Use exponents and square roots. Learning Goal: At the end of this lesson, students will be able to solve literal equations for a specified variable. More Complex Content: Dimensional Analysis Weighted Averages Score 4.0 So this is what I had to learn this for! Without help, I can solve a literal equation for any variable and use that equation to solve a real-life problemlike finding out how much principal someone invested in a bank, or what height a cylinder is. Score 3.5 Now that I’m so good at literal equations, I can solve a literal equation for any or all of the variables, and recognize that these equations are all equivalent to one another. Score 3.0 I’m proud to say I can solve every literal equation problem correctly without help even if I have to do many steps with addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, fractions, exponents/square roots, and even parentheses. Score 2.5 I can get the right answer without help if I only have to do one step, but if I have to do more than one thing to solve the problem, I might make a mistake part way through or get stuck and forget what I should do next, especially on harder problems with fractions, exponents, square roots, or parentheses. Score 2.0 I know what I am supposed to do, and I can begin without help. But once, I start, I sometimes get lost and make mistakes such as, multiply when I should divide, or add a variable to one side of the equation, but not the other side of the equal sign. I sometimes do the operations in the wrong order. Score 1.5 I can solve a problem, with help, if all I have to do is add or subtract a variable from both sides first, and then multiply or divide a variable in order to isolate the variable I need to solve for. Score 1.0 I can solve a simple problem if all I have to do is divide, multiply, add or subtract a variable from both sides of the equation, as long as I have help. Score 0.5 I know which letter needs to be alone on one side of the equal sign (which variable to isolate). Score 0.0 I do not know where to begin, and all explanations just sound like another language. What happened to all the numbers? What am I supposed to do with all those letters?

More Complex Content: Dimensional Analysis Weighted Averages Score 4.0 In addition to Score 3.0 performance, in-depth inferences and applications that go beyond what was taught, such as The student can correctly solve a literal equation for the specified variable(s), and solve a real-life problem with a numeric solution using the equation solution. Score 3.5 The student can correctly identify equivalent literal equations solved for various specified variables. Score 3.0 While engaged in solving literal equations tasks, the student demonstrates an ability to correctly solve for the specified variable in problems that include one or all of the following parameters: parentheses, fractions, exponents of 2, multiplication and/or division, and addition and/or subtraction. The student exhibits no major errors or omissions. Score 2.5 The student can, without help, partially solve for the specified variable in multi-step equations that include one or all of the following parameters: parentheses, fractions, exponents of 2, multiplication and/or division, and addition and/or subtraction; and can, without help, successfully solve a literal equation for a specified variable if only one step is required to reach the solution. Score 2.0 No major errors or omissions regarding the simpler details and processes, such as without help, the student can begin to solve for a specified variable, but will make a common error(s) preventing a correct solution, such as: not following the reverse order of operations, not performing an operation on both sides of the equation, performing the wrong operation(s) on the correct variable(s), and/or performing the correct operation on the incorrect variable(s). However, the student exhibits major errors or omissions with Score 3.0
  • 3. elements. Score 1.5 The student with help can solve a two-step equation involving addition and/or subtraction and multiplication and/or division. Score 1.0 With help, a partial understanding of some of the Score 2.0 elements and some of the Score 3.0 elements. The student with help can solve a one-step literal equation. Score 0.5 The student can identify the specified variable. Score 0.0 Even with help, no understanding or skill demonstrated.
