A C E L E B R A T I O N F O R E V E R Y O N E
In 2018, we celebrate the 10th edition of the Gay Games. Nine great events have preceded
this anniversary. From all of us in Amsterdam to all involved in the Federation of Gay Games:
congratulations!
We believe Amsterdam would be the perfect city to organize Gay Games X. Amsterdam has a
rich tradition of personal freedom and its liberal values ensure a safe and confortable place for
all people, no matter what their gender is, or the colour of their skin, or their sexual orientation.
Participants and visitors of Gay Games X – from whatever part of the world – can feel completely
at ease for one entire week. Be themselves without any hesitations.
The Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation is a network organization.Together with many different
professional organizations, we will undertake this adventure with you.The gay sports, cultural
and business associations we work with are of a very high standard. GUTS (gays united through
sports) is member of the Dutch branch of IOC, Progay organize the biggest gay pride in the world
andWorkplace Pride speak to CEO’s of Shell and IBM on a daily basis. To name just a few. With
Amsterdam being a relatively small city, teaming up with such great partners will make for a very
exiting event.
Right in the middle of the old city centre, the Museum Plaza will become CelebrationVillage – the
vibrant hotspot of Gay Games X.With opening and closing ceremonies, accessible to everyone.
And a multiplicity of activities during that week.True inclusion: participants and visitors
celebrating LGBT culture and lifestyle, together with the local people ofThe Netherlands.
With the world facing difficult financial times, the Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation has
found a way of achieving a grand spectacle, using a relatively limited budget. We believe public
resources are not inexhaustible and Gay Games X should take that into account.
Without hesitation, all members of the Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation fully agree with the
bid we offer you now. Please enjoy.

OF THE GAY GAMES
Introduction
All Gay Games have been a great celebration of joy,
inclusiveness and non-discriminatory participation
regardless of sexual orientation, gender, race, religion,
nationality, ethnic origin, political belief(s), athletic/
artistic ability, physical challenge, age or health status.
Anyone who might ask: “Why is there still a need for such
an event?” has never been to any Gay Games in his or her
life. It has become a monumental jubilation, an icon of
LGBT culture.
In 2018 the world proudly welcomes the 10th edition of
the Gay Games – what a great achievement! However
this bid book beauty pageant may turn out: Amsterdam
congratulates the Federation of Gay Games for its
effortless work to come up with great events, time and
time again. Because we know all too well: it hasn’t been
easy. Especially financially – some host cities have
struggled with this in the past. The Amsterdam bid has the
utmost focus on this aspect without compromising on the
objectives of the Gay Games. By doing so, we honor the
work of dr.TomWaddell.
It’s true: LGBT equality and liberation have gained
ground in many parts of the world. The visibility of the
Gay Games and the personal strength it imparted to
all visitors has been a serious contribution to that. But
there is still so much good work to be done. Much of that
work is described in the goals that the Federation of Gay
Games has set out to achieve. To reach those goals and

to secure the future of the event for generations to come,
the 10thanniversary must surpass all previous Gay Games
– in personal experience, worldwide political potency
and financial certainty. Only Amsterdam can do this. Gay
Games X in 2018 will become memorable for offering
a warm welcome to us all, for including the diverse
community that we are, for reconnecting the youth to
the Gay Games and for lifting this event to a stage it so
desperately deserves.
This April the Dutch queen will abdicate and her son will
become king. All news media jump on the event. In one
interview, the respected Dutch historian, professor dr.
Herman Pleij pointed out that: “the very core of Dutch
society is diversity.” In contrast to, for example, the British
or the French, where all that was different was frowned
upon, the Dutch embrace the diverse.
We need to, we are trade people so need to get along
with everyone. Prejudice only gets in the way of making
a dollar. No wonder New York was once New Amsterdam
– different nationalities, influences and people of other
sexual orientation are as welcome there as they are here.
The obvious choice
Many of the volunteers, who collaborated on creating
this bid for you, remember Gay GamesV in 1998 like it
was yesterday.Without exception, they all hold positive
memories to that week in the summer of Amsterdam.
“It was like we were the majority instead of a minority
for once” is a comment that is often heard. We have
continued to visit other Gay Games, like the one in Sydney
(VI) or in Cologne (VIII). Excellent Games but – arrogant as
it may sound – we feel: nothing like the one in Amsterdam.
Where stereotypes were broken down and bridges were
built between mainstream and LGBT sports and cultural
communities were built. These bridges still exist today,
but and nowadays they have expanded their scope and
have obtained an unprecedented clout.Take the canal
parade for instance; the highlight of modern day Gay
Pride Amsterdam. This event was born in 1998 during Gay
GamesV as part of the program.
Without Gay GamesV, the city of Amsterdam would not be
able to host this event as part of the best and biggest Gay
Pride in the world. It is the second largest annual event
of the city with hundred thousends of straight people
partaking in LGBT culture and activities. And it is of course
needless to say that the first LGBT marriages in the world
were held in Amsterdam.
Amsterdam only inhabits around 800,000 residents
and still the city is globally known as one of the great
capitals of the world. Being only a dot on the map,The
Netherlands came out 13th in the London Olympics,
having top-notch sports venues and facilities to show for
it. Besides: this city has more culture on offer per square
mile than any other city in the world and for a relatively
small city, Amsterdam and its people have always given a
great deal of thought, money and effort to human rights

issues – no wonder the LGBT Rights advocacy director
of Human RightsWatch is a former Dutch politician. COC
Netherlands has been advocating the rights of lesbian
women, gay men, bisexuals and transgenders from 1946
on. COC Netherlands is the only LGBT-organization with a
special consultative status with the United Nations.
Like in 1998, Gay Games X will not be concentrated in a
“gay ghetto” but will involve the entire city. The ‘human
measure’of Amsterdam is one of the great assets of the
Amsterdam bid. In every corner of every neighborhood,
people are invited to join us in an event that will range to
their very doorstep. Yes: some sports venues and events
are located or held at the outskirts of the city, but they are
still only 15 minutes away from the city center.
The involvement of young people with modern technology
and social networks with grow further every year.To be
able to reconnect them with the Gay Games, technology
is of the utmost importance – young people can only be
reached inside their own world, using their own language
and means of communication. The Netherlands is known
for its incredibly high level of technology (the smartest
parts of your iPhone are created here, so was the cd,
and the dvd) and communications. It should come as
no surprise that social media, (real time) streaming
video and online reporting at most of the events, are
commonplace in this Amsterdam bid.

BUDGET
InThe Netherlands it’s not very polite to talk about
money. But since the world has entered an entire new
economical era of financial distress and theWest is
dealing with diminishing wealth, we cannot disregard this
in our bid.The IMF has recently stated that the financial
crises will last until at least 2018.To organize the Gay
Games X, Amsterdam chooses to present a far more
moderate budget than bidding host cities have presented
in the past. Still, Amsterdam promises to outdo all other
Gay Games. We can do so, because we built a network
organization structure. The gay sports associations are
all professional organizations in their own right.Together
they are partnered in GUTS (Gays UnitedThrough
Sports) – a member of the national NOC*NSF, itself a
member of the IOC. GUTS is one of our leading partners in
organizing the Gay Games X. So is Progay; the planning
force of Amsterdam Gay Pride. AndWorkplace Pride;
the international (Amsterdam based) gays-in-business
association. Let’s not forget the Amsterdam University
that is giving its full support. And of course local and
national governments praise this bid –not in the least
because we offer a unique and unparalleled sponsor plan
that is set out to obtain contribution and engagement
from large international corporations, in a very early
stage. This is a new way of thinking and the best possible
way forward.Where others will need to build a structure,
Amsterdam already has one.
The Gay Games X will need to be an event of such quality
and prestige that no one will ever after want to miss out
of. LGBT or straight. Only Amsterdam can accomplish this.

Amsterdam is of great importance
for the organization of this event.
The City of Amsterdam expressed in
its memorandum ‘Amsterdam Gay
Capital’, its ambition to host the Gay
Games X.
Relations with funding
partners and sponsors
The main partner in the organization
of the event is the City of
Amsterdam.The city council will
make a significant contribution
in the form of permits, locations,
public order and safety.
The event is an opportunity for
Dutch business to address a
relatively wealthy audience and
show their social involvement.
To organize the Gay Games
in Amsterdam the support of
Dutch business is needed. It’s
the mission ofThe Amsterdam
Games 2018 Foundation to get
companies interested in joining the
languages. Reaching vast numbers
of gay men in their native tongue
was never this easy.This publication
has been riding the wave of success
that in recent years swelled high
enough to see far beyond Europe’s
borders.Winq Magazine targets
its readers through a unique,
independent journalistic approach
and a rich and mature design.
Winq’s design, fashion, travel,
entertainment and political features
are a product of international
collaboration between the most
talented and experienced magazine
makers in the world.Winq Magazine
is the leading gay magazine in both
The Netherlands and Belgium.
Workplace pride
Workplace Pride is a non-profit
umbrella foundation based in
Amsterdam that strives for greater
acceptance of Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, andTransgender people
in the workplace and in society.
Workplace Pride’s Members include
LGBT employee networks in major
multinationals, large domestic
companies, public sector and non-
23 amsterdam
2018
The foundation works in a network
and large parts of the event will be
organized by professional partners.
Legal status
The founders chose to work as a
foundation. This best fits the goal of
the founders. Firstly it is a non-profit
organization; all funds will be spent
only for the needs of the foundation.
Furthermore, the foundation has
an idealistic purpose and thus will
be fiscally seen as a public benefit
organization (PBO).This PBO status
ensures that donations are tax
deductible and the foundation itself
is exempt of taxes on donations.
These fiscal advantages help in
setting up a plan for beneficial
sponsorship and acquisition.The
activities of the foundation shall be
regarded as business activities that
are subject toVAT.
The foundation will organize
the event as a network in which
important parts of the program
will be outsourced to professional
partners. In the cooperation
agreements it will be made clear
that the contractors bear the liability
risks and not Amsterdam Games
2018 Foundation.
Operational Plan
Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation
will coordinate the organization of
the Gay Games 2018.The initiators
choose to set up a new legal
entity, functioning as a network
organization.This means that for
the different parts of the event,
experienced organizations will be
mobilized. For more information,
please see chapter 13.
organization of the event.
Companies know what the best
way is of supporting the event
for their business. Amsterdam
Games 2018 Foundation wants to
involve companies actively in the
organization and realization of
the event, to get the best “return
on investment”. A proposal has
been developed where interested
companies are invited to participate
in a Board of participants.
The Board of participants will be
actively involved in the development
of the marketing plan and the
realization of the license agreement
with the Federation of Gay Games.
Companies that join as participants
will acquire exclusive sponsor rights
in the market in which they operate.
With a maximum of 20 companies
in the Board of Participants,
Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation
is convinced to get a combined
contribution of 1.25 million.
Current financial status
Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation
is a newly established foundation.

3.3 Sports program
PHILOSOPHY
basketball and volleyball, sports that are popular among the
female participants like football (soccer) and softball and
sports that are accessible for participants with disabilities
e.g. tennis and chess. We aim for the best competitions ever
organized, where everyone can play on their level, competing
against competitors from all over the world. We make sport
social, social by organizing more than only a tournament. All
tournaments will be interactive, have time for pleasure, time
to get to know each other and time to share your experiences.
No one is excluded; everyone is welcome to participate on
any level. A true celebration for everyone.
place, the Sloterparkbad, venue of official FINA Amsterdam
Swim Cup or the Amsterdam Bosbaan, where our national
rowing equip is training and will be used as the venue for
the world championship rowing in 2014. Both are venues
that combine an inspiring history and a future for aspiring
talented athletes. All venues are very accessible by public
transport and by car andonly a few miles away from the
Museum Plaza.
Gay Games X offers a mix of sports, sports that are popular
in the Netherlands or Europe, for example badminton, sports
that have a great history in the Gay Games history like
Amsterdam is a sport minded city, home of Football Club Ajax,
host of many major sport events like the start of the Giro in
2010, Amsterdam Marathon and the upcoming European
Championships Athletics in 2016. Organizing is in our blood,
working closely together with our LGBT and non-LGTB clubs in
the city and GUTS as foundation we combine our knowledge
and expertise into a great organization where sport is the
limit.
Amsterdam Gay Games X offers a full range of exciting sports

Amsterdam Games 2018 bidbook

  • 2. A C E L E B R A T I O N F O R E V E R Y O N E
  • 3. In 2018, we celebrate the 10th edition of the Gay Games. Nine great events have preceded this anniversary. From all of us in Amsterdam to all involved in the Federation of Gay Games: congratulations! We believe Amsterdam would be the perfect city to organize Gay Games X. Amsterdam has a rich tradition of personal freedom and its liberal values ensure a safe and confortable place for all people, no matter what their gender is, or the colour of their skin, or their sexual orientation. Participants and visitors of Gay Games X – from whatever part of the world – can feel completely at ease for one entire week. Be themselves without any hesitations. The Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation is a network organization.Together with many different professional organizations, we will undertake this adventure with you.The gay sports, cultural and business associations we work with are of a very high standard. GUTS (gays united through sports) is member of the Dutch branch of IOC, Progay organize the biggest gay pride in the world andWorkplace Pride speak to CEO’s of Shell and IBM on a daily basis. To name just a few. With Amsterdam being a relatively small city, teaming up with such great partners will make for a very exiting event. Right in the middle of the old city centre, the Museum Plaza will become CelebrationVillage – the vibrant hotspot of Gay Games X.With opening and closing ceremonies, accessible to everyone. And a multiplicity of activities during that week.True inclusion: participants and visitors celebrating LGBT culture and lifestyle, together with the local people ofThe Netherlands. With the world facing difficult financial times, the Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation has found a way of achieving a grand spectacle, using a relatively limited budget. We believe public resources are not inexhaustible and Gay Games X should take that into account. Without hesitation, all members of the Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation fully agree with the bid we offer you now. Please enjoy. WHY AMSTERDAM WANTS TO HOST GAY GAMES X amsterdam 2018

  • 7. amsterdam 2018 7 amsterdam 2018 7 1. UNDERSTAND ING OF THE GAY GAMES Introduction All Gay Games have been a great celebration of joy, inclusiveness and non-discriminatory participation regardless of sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, political belief(s), athletic/ artistic ability, physical challenge, age or health status. Anyone who might ask: “Why is there still a need for such an event?” has never been to any Gay Games in his or her life. It has become a monumental jubilation, an icon of LGBT culture. In 2018 the world proudly welcomes the 10th edition of the Gay Games – what a great achievement! However this bid book beauty pageant may turn out: Amsterdam congratulates the Federation of Gay Games for its effortless work to come up with great events, time and time again. Because we know all too well: it hasn’t been easy. Especially financially – some host cities have struggled with this in the past. The Amsterdam bid has the utmost focus on this aspect without compromising on the objectives of the Gay Games. By doing so, we honor the work of dr.TomWaddell. It’s true: LGBT equality and liberation have gained ground in many parts of the world. The visibility of the Gay Games and the personal strength it imparted to all visitors has been a serious contribution to that. But there is still so much good work to be done. Much of that work is described in the goals that the Federation of Gay Games has set out to achieve. To reach those goals and
  • 8. amsterdam 2018 8 1. UNDERSTAND ING OF THE GAY GAMES to secure the future of the event for generations to come, the 10thanniversary must surpass all previous Gay Games – in personal experience, worldwide political potency and financial certainty. Only Amsterdam can do this. Gay Games X in 2018 will become memorable for offering a warm welcome to us all, for including the diverse community that we are, for reconnecting the youth to the Gay Games and for lifting this event to a stage it so desperately deserves. This April the Dutch queen will abdicate and her son will become king. All news media jump on the event. In one interview, the respected Dutch historian, professor dr. Herman Pleij pointed out that: “the very core of Dutch society is diversity.” In contrast to, for example, the British or the French, where all that was different was frowned upon, the Dutch embrace the diverse. We need to, we are trade people so need to get along with everyone. Prejudice only gets in the way of making a dollar. No wonder New York was once New Amsterdam – different nationalities, influences and people of other sexual orientation are as welcome there as they are here. The obvious choice Many of the volunteers, who collaborated on creating this bid for you, remember Gay GamesV in 1998 like it was yesterday.Without exception, they all hold positive memories to that week in the summer of Amsterdam. “It was like we were the majority instead of a minority for once” is a comment that is often heard. We have continued to visit other Gay Games, like the one in Sydney (VI) or in Cologne (VIII). Excellent Games but – arrogant as it may sound – we feel: nothing like the one in Amsterdam. Where stereotypes were broken down and bridges were built between mainstream and LGBT sports and cultural communities were built. These bridges still exist today, but and nowadays they have expanded their scope and have obtained an unprecedented clout.Take the canal parade for instance; the highlight of modern day Gay Pride Amsterdam. This event was born in 1998 during Gay GamesV as part of the program. Without Gay GamesV, the city of Amsterdam would not be able to host this event as part of the best and biggest Gay Pride in the world. It is the second largest annual event of the city with hundred thousends of straight people partaking in LGBT culture and activities. And it is of course needless to say that the first LGBT marriages in the world were held in Amsterdam. Amsterdam only inhabits around 800,000 residents and still the city is globally known as one of the great capitals of the world. Being only a dot on the map,The Netherlands came out 13th in the London Olympics, having top-notch sports venues and facilities to show for it. Besides: this city has more culture on offer per square mile than any other city in the world and for a relatively small city, Amsterdam and its people have always given a great deal of thought, money and effort to human rights
  • 9. 9 amsterdam 2018 1. UNDERSTAND ING OF THE GAY GAMES issues – no wonder the LGBT Rights advocacy director of Human RightsWatch is a former Dutch politician. COC Netherlands has been advocating the rights of lesbian women, gay men, bisexuals and transgenders from 1946 on. COC Netherlands is the only LGBT-organization with a special consultative status with the United Nations. Like in 1998, Gay Games X will not be concentrated in a “gay ghetto” but will involve the entire city. The ‘human measure’of Amsterdam is one of the great assets of the Amsterdam bid. In every corner of every neighborhood, people are invited to join us in an event that will range to their very doorstep. Yes: some sports venues and events are located or held at the outskirts of the city, but they are still only 15 minutes away from the city center. The involvement of young people with modern technology and social networks with grow further every year.To be able to reconnect them with the Gay Games, technology is of the utmost importance – young people can only be reached inside their own world, using their own language and means of communication. The Netherlands is known for its incredibly high level of technology (the smartest parts of your iPhone are created here, so was the cd, and the dvd) and communications. It should come as no surprise that social media, (real time) streaming video and online reporting at most of the events, are commonplace in this Amsterdam bid.
  • 10. 10 amsterdam 2018 1. UNDERSTAND ING OF THE GAY GAMES BUDGET InThe Netherlands it’s not very polite to talk about money. But since the world has entered an entire new economical era of financial distress and theWest is dealing with diminishing wealth, we cannot disregard this in our bid.The IMF has recently stated that the financial crises will last until at least 2018.To organize the Gay Games X, Amsterdam chooses to present a far more moderate budget than bidding host cities have presented in the past. Still, Amsterdam promises to outdo all other Gay Games. We can do so, because we built a network organization structure. The gay sports associations are all professional organizations in their own right.Together they are partnered in GUTS (Gays UnitedThrough Sports) – a member of the national NOC*NSF, itself a member of the IOC. GUTS is one of our leading partners in organizing the Gay Games X. So is Progay; the planning force of Amsterdam Gay Pride. AndWorkplace Pride; the international (Amsterdam based) gays-in-business association. Let’s not forget the Amsterdam University that is giving its full support. And of course local and national governments praise this bid –not in the least because we offer a unique and unparalleled sponsor plan that is set out to obtain contribution and engagement from large international corporations, in a very early stage. This is a new way of thinking and the best possible way forward.Where others will need to build a structure, Amsterdam already has one. The Gay Games X will need to be an event of such quality and prestige that no one will ever after want to miss out of. LGBT or straight. Only Amsterdam can accomplish this.
  • 12. 2. organizational structure and capacity amsterdam 2018

  • 23. 23 amsterdam 2018 The foundation works in a network and large parts of the event will be organized by professional partners. Legal status The founders chose to work as a foundation. This best fits the goal of the founders. Firstly it is a non-profit organization; all funds will be spent only for the needs of the foundation. Furthermore, the foundation has an idealistic purpose and thus will be fiscally seen as a public benefit organization (PBO).This PBO status ensures that donations are tax deductible and the foundation itself is exempt of taxes on donations. These fiscal advantages help in setting up a plan for beneficial sponsorship and acquisition. The activities of the foundation shall be regarded as business activities that are subject toVAT. The foundation will organize the event as a network in which important parts of the program will be outsourced to professional partners. In the cooperation agreements it will be made clear that the contractors bear the liability risks and not Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation. Operational Plan Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation will coordinate the organization of the Gay Games 2018.The initiators choose to set up a new legal entity, functioning as a network organization. This means that for the different parts of the event, experienced organizations will be mobilized. For more information, please see chapter 13. organization of the event. Companies know what the best way is of supporting the event for their business. Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation wants to involve companies actively in the organization and realization of the event, to get the best “return on investment”. A proposal has been developed where interested companies are invited to participate in a Board of participants. The Board of participants will be actively involved in the development of the marketing plan and the realization of the license agreement with the Federation of Gay Games. Companies that join as participants will acquire exclusive sponsor rights in the market in which they operate. With a maximum of 20 companies in the Board of Participants, Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation is convinced to get a combined contribution of 1.25 million. Current financial status Amsterdam Games 2018 Foundation is a newly established foundation. 2. OrganizationAL STRCUTURE AND CAPACITY
