Indira Gandhi was born in Allahabad, India in 1917 and was the only child in her family. She served as president of the Congress Party from 1966 to 1977 and was twice elected as Prime Minister of India, first from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She was assassinated by two of her bodyguards at the Prime Minister's residence in 1984.
