We hosted a webinar where we heard from the world’s foremost expert on PRINCE2.
Known as the ‘The Yoda of PRINCE2’ (well that’s what we call him in the office), Colin Bentley wrote all the early versions of the PRINCE2 manual and was the lead reviewer and mentor to the 2009 revision to the PRINCE2 manual for the OGC.
He was also the Chief Examiner for The APM Group until his retirement in 2008.
Colin’s latest publication is titled PRINCE2 Rollout Approach and in this webinar he addressed the things that are essential to avoid when rolling out PRINCE2 to into an existing environment.

3. DON’T LEAVE
SENIOR MANAGEMENT BEHIND
• Failure will cause delays at all
decision points.
• Use a half-hour or half-day
presentation to ‘sell’ it.
• Concentrate on the control it gives
them with minimum effort.

4. PROJECT BOARD
• Make sure it truly represents the 3
interests.
• Make sure the members are capable
of decision-making.
• No opinion-holders.
• Not too large (SU role)
• Authority = importance/cost/size of
project.

5. BEWARE OF
‘JUST DO IT’
Make sure that all
SU/IP activities
are done

6. UPDATING PLANS
• All plans change from Day 1.
• Don’t spend too much time adjusting
the plan each week.
• Update when you can’t get back to the
plan by other means.
• Keep careful records of performance
versus plan estimates.

7. DON’T CUT CORNERS
• Don’t attempt to save time/money by cutting
corners – dropping or reducing quality testing.
• Users can forgive missing time/cost targets, but
never forgive poor quality.
• Make sure you get CQE and Acceptance
Criteria clear before you start.
• Make sure you can measure
the Acceptance Criteria
when you finish.

8. DON’T FORGET TO MEASURE BENEFITS
Take measurements of the current
situation before you start, or you’ll
never be able to measure
achievement of the business benefits.

9. and here’s the most important
seventh one
CHANGE CONTROL
• Don’t ever relax your watch
on change control.
• Once the design is agreed, do nothing
for nothing.
• Assess the cost and time of every
change, however small.
• Tell the user what this is.
• It doesn’t matter if you later find that
you have done it within
• the current plan limits, always leave
yourself the elbow room.
