Audience Feedback Taylor Barnes
Following the group feedback of our final musicvideo; ‘Oh No’, I gathered five individual audience responses. On each slide is the question given and the five individual answers . I got these results through a questionnaire that I created and dispersed it to five different people. There was no conferring between candidates so I got an honest answer of each person. After the results of the participants I shall summarise my findings.
Question 1: How is it typical of a music video? It is typical of a music video because there is a clear main character (the artist) shown throughout. The message of the song corresponds with the visuals, which is common in most music videos. There is a storyline in this video which makes it appear like a professional music video. In my opinion, this is a typical music video because it is fun and exciting. The video includes a variety of scenes which catches the audience’s attention from start to end. ‘Oh No’ relates to a typical music video, because of the key attention to the setting and costume. Each has a purpose and looks cleverly thought out and placed throughout the video.
Question 2: What is unique about it? The video didn’t start straight away with the music; there was footage of a cassette player. There was a comedic element to the video which made it different and entertaining. The main feature of this video which makes it unique is the use of spontaneous variation of clips and change of the roles which the character (artist) plays. This video has unique aspects to it by including humour. Adding humour to the video allows the audience to have fun and enjoy watching it, as they get to see 'Taylor' in different characters and situations. Towards the end of the video there are blooper shots of the artist. This made the video unique as the audience could get to see the real personality of the artist and feel more connected to the video.
Question 3: Does the video work? Yes, because of the storylines kept the audience entertained. Yes, the interesting use of setting and costume made it exciting. The affects in certain scenes make the video work as they fit in with the messages of the song. I think the video works because it has a real-life sense to it. Including the outside, e.g. other people being part of it (in the makeup artist), links with the meaning of the lyrics; "I know exactly what I want and who I want to be..." The general editing throughout works in beat with the song and the storyline.
Question 4: What is impressive / interesting about the video? The money scene when the artist throws money in the air then it is quickly reversed. The instrumental part of the song, where the bloopers are shown, very entertaining. The spilt screen where there are four storylines of the artist on screen at the same time. It’s interesting because it has different scenes to do with the outside world, e.g. weather girl, teacher, and beautician. The different techniques used in the video, e.g. when the artist is shown three times on the screen in the same setting is really impressive.
Question 5: Could it be better? The night time shot could be a little lighter to establish the shot more clearly. Maybe more of a range of lighting in certain clips for example the drama room to make it stand out slightly more. Perhaps the green screen could have been a little neater in some areas. In my opinion, the video is very good however I think that it could be improved with the matching of music. Some lip syncing was slightly out but the majority was perfect. More variation of editing in some shots could have been effective.
Question 6: Was there a good use of time and pace in the video? Yes, the images changed to the beat of the music. Yes, the structure of the video was very upbeat, and the part where there are three images of the artist on screen at the same time enters and exits the screen to the beat of the music. The editing throughout the video was on time with the music which kept a steady pace to the video. As the time and pace matched the music it helped to portray the storylines effectively and matched each storyline well. There was perfect timing with transitions of scene to scene which showed attention to detail.
Question 7: Can you tell the genre of the music video? Indie Pop, as the video was quite quirky and individual. Indie Pop, because of the comedy shown throughout. Pop, various costume and setting which is common in pop videos. Pop, as there is one main character with no instruments shown in the video. Indie Pop, more experimental that pop videos, breaks barriers such as the weather woman when she clicks on the embarrassing picture.
My response to Audience Feedback Through looking at the feedback of these participants I can now see in which ways our music video worked for the audience and in which ways it could have improved. I do agree with the majority of the comments made by the participants, such as the lighting could have been more experimental. However I believe if there was too much of a variety of lights it would have overwhelmed the video and sidetracked the overall performance. I was quite surprised by the amount of positive feedback that I received, it proved that our video does work and that is has been understood and enjoyed by our audience. As a result of my audience feedback for our video it has led me to think that I would probably consider the lighting aspect in some scenes, such as the drama and outdoor scenes to make it look more professional. But overall I am pleased with the feedback that I have received for ‘Oh No’.
