Beginning Skateboarding
Beginner's Q & A
Q. What's a good board for beginners?
A. Anything but a Wal-mart deck. If you are seriously striving to become a good
skateboarder, you need a good deck to practice on. A K-Mart board definitely won't cut it! I
recommend starting out with a blank complete. Blank decks are cheap and are constructed
very well, so they last a long time- they're great for beginners. As you get better and better,
you may want to start looking into brand name decks. CCS.com offers great blank completes
starting at!
Q. Does it matter which end of the board I use?
A. Not really- Most use the shorter and lower end as the tail. The higher and wider end is the
2. nose. However, it's all a matter of personal preference. For example, some find that the tail
has better pop but the nose is easier to scoop.
Q. Do shoes matter?
A. Obviously, you don't want to be skating in sandals or dress shoes, so I strongly
recommend getting a pair of skate shoes. They are a great investment because they provide
comfort and can withstand the stresses of skateboarding. Skate shoes have a larger surface
area to allow more balance, and many come with ankle support to prevent yourself from
rolling your ankles.
Q. How should I push?
A. You always want your front foot on the board and push off the ground with your back foot.
The opposite is called pushing mongo. Make sure you develop the habit of pushing your
board the right way- pushing mongo makes it more difficult to set your feet up for tricks.
Q. How do I turn?
A. To turn, you simply lean in the direction you want to turn into. Just bend your knees and
place more weight on your heels or toes, depending on the direction you want to turn into.
For a tighter turn, do a quick manual by placing more weight on the tail, lifting the front
wheels off the ground and turning in the direction you want to go in.
Q. How do I stop?
A. To stop you can simply put your weight on the tail, and drag your tail on the ground. This
is called a tailstop and can wear away your tail. You can use an alternative method and use
your pushing foot to slow yourself down.
Q. When can I start learning tricks?
A. Before learning any trick, you must be comfortable standing and riding a skateboard. If
you can't even stand on the board without falling, there is no way you're ready to learn the
Ollie. Practice riding around everyday until you can easily push, turn and stop. Then, you
know you are ready to learn the Ollie.
Q. Why is your reading method so much better than tutorial videos?
A. You see, most trick tip videos give so little information that it's almost impossible to get a
good idea of all the details of the trick. If you have lots of free time to explore and mess
around with learning a new trick, then a traditional video tutorial might be a good place to
start. But if you want to learn new tricks in the fastest, most effective way possible, then most
3. likely, video trick tutorials won't do much to help you. Even if the video gave you the
instructions in detail, you'll still have trouble remember exactly what to do. That's why a
written guide is so important. However, a visual can still be very helpful. That's why I
encourage you to watch a few videos on how a trick is supposed to be executed so you have
a clear image of what to do.
Q. What can I do to ensure I learn these tricks quickly and effortlessly?
A. Have fun when skating! Read the trick tips thoroughly, watch videos of pros, ask questions
on discussion boards but most importantly, practice, practice and practice...
Nowadays, skateboarding is a very popular activity among youth, and has become an art-
form to many enthusiasts. Skateboarding is a hard sport to learn. It's not something that can
be learned overnight. Even the top pros like Paul Rodriguez and Eric Koston still learn new
things even though they have been doing it for years. With skateboarding, there are endless
possibilities when it comes to tricks. When it comes to beginners, learning the basics is the
best way to start this great pastime.
First, you should know the anatomy of your skateboard. A skateboard consists of a deck,
trucks, wheels, and bearings. Grip tape is used to help your feet grip the board. Hardware is
used to bolt your trucks to the deck and nuts are used to fasten the wheels on. For
information on skateboard products, visit your local skateboard retailer.
When it comes to skateboarding the first and foremost thing you should learn is how ride.
Most people who have never ridden a skateboard get on the first time and wipe out.
Skateboarding requires a great deal balance. You must always maintain your center of
gravity directly over your board. If you lean too far back, chances are you will fall backwards
and the board will shoot out from under you. If you lean too far forward, chances are you will
fall on your face. Maintaining your weight directly over your board, is the most important thing
to know. You should practice by placing your board on carpet or grass and standing on it with
your feet over the bolts. You should also know which way you ride; either goofy or regular.
Goofy is with your right foot in front, and regular is with your left foot in front.
Find a decent place to ride, preferably an empty parking lot. Set your board on the ground
and just stand on it without moving and try to keep your balance. When you think your ready,
try taking your back foot off and push off the ground while keeping your center of gravity over
your front foot. Place your back foot back on the board and transfer your weight back to both
feet. Start with single pushes to get the feel of it. To gain more speed add one or two more
pushes before putting your back foot back on the board.
Turning is another basic technique to learn. There are two ways to turn on your skateboard.
One way is to lean from side to side, causing the trucks to bend which makes the board turn.
A backside turn would be if you leaned forward, and a front side turn would be if you leaned
4. backward. Another way to turn is by pivot around your back truck. This is done by focusing
your weight on your tail, and lifting the front trucks and pivoting around the back trucks.
Skaters who prefer tighter trucks usually use the pivot turn method, whereas the ones who
ride loose trucks prefer the leaning method. For beginners the pivot method is recommended
because it is easier to learn. This can be performed by transferring your weight to the tail of
your board and slightly lifting the nose to pivot left or right over your back truck. This turn kind
of turn can be done at low speeds, which is easier for beginners.
The most basic of all skateboarding tricks is the Ollie. An Ollie is when you jump on your
skateboard. The board is popped down on the tail and the nose lifts up while the front foot
slides up the board to even the board out horizontally in the air and then comes down. Place
your back foot on the tail and your front just behind the front bolts. The Ollie should be
performed in one quick motion. Quickly lift front of your while popping your tail on the ground.
Slide your front foot up by rolling your ankle sideways. Even the board out in the air and
come down for landing. Nollies and Fakie Ollies, are Ollies performed by popping the nose
first and sliding the back foot towards the tail. 180 Ollies can be done by shifting your weight
in the direction of the turn before you pop the tail to Ollie. You can either try this front side or
backside. kickflips are usually the first "flip" tricks learned by skateboarders. A kickflip is
when the board flips under you while in the air from an Ollie. A kickflip can be performed by
the same motion as the Ollie, but when you slide your front foot up, you want to flick it of the
side of your board, causing it to flip.
Try to focus on learning how to ride your board first, and worry about trying Ollies and
kickflips after you've mastered riding your board. It's important in skateboarding to take one
thing at a time, and not to get ahead of yourself. Always remember to have fun and not get
mad at yourself when you can't do a trick. Practice makes perfect!

advisable to buy a cheap skateboard and the chances of you breaking it are quite high!
Check out a sports shop where you can buy everything related to skateboarding: skateboard

Try balancing yourself and get comfortable with the board. Placing your feet the right way is
very important. Place your front foot with your ankle facing the front side of the board. Put the
other on the rear tracks. Bend your knees slightly and move from one side to the other. You
can check out a video clip or a book to get a graphical/pictorial understanding. Get your
basics right. You do not want to fall off and suffer serious injuries, so be careful.
Next, put the foot you are most comfortable with on the front of the board. This will help in
5. balancing. Now slowly move for a short distance preferably within the confines of your home.
Try these steps in your garden. A flat platform is vital for moving forward. Now, place your
rear foot on the ground and lightly push yourself forward. Hold your hands on either side for
balance. After a while, you can twist and turn around by shifting your weight towards the rear
wheels. This will automatically raise the front wheels.
Practice until you balance perfectly. You can invent your own steps and styles. Enjoy!
