Cloud computing sets a new trend in the way IT infrastructure operates, enabling greater
responsiveness and lower costs across companies of all sizes. There are a variety of
Cloud products presented in the market today to help companies satisfy their growing
needs for powerful performance and functionality. Cloud products and Cloud-targeted ap-
plications are designed for companies that are either building their applications in the
Cloud from scratch or that are replacing substantial portions of their federated services.
This session is aimed at helping Cloud runners and Cloud starters choose Cloud products
and services that suit their business and technology requirements.
SESSION DESCRIPTION
This session will discuss effective bandwidth control management in a typical Enterprise
Environment, as well as the challenges related to its administration. After attending this
session, you will also learn about the tools that can be implemented in your everyday
business practice, with a deeper look at Zeus Traffic Manager, as an example.
OUTLINE
What is Zeus Traffic Manager?
Application delivery controllers were developed in response to a need to improve the
performance and reliability of traditional Web applications, but they have moved on
significantly from simple hardware devices that were load-balancing TCP connections.
Zeus Traffic Manager is an application delivery controller for managing bandwidth.
This tool controls application traffic, while inspecting, transforming, and routing re-
quests as it load-balances them across the application infrastructure. The speaker will
start by explaining how Zeus Traffic Manager features can help optimize your Cloud
experience and costs.
Why Zeus Traffic Manager?
The speaker will focus on how the solution enables application acceleration, traffic pri-
oritization, and bandwidth usage control to mitigate the effect of flash floods. The
speaker will touch upon Zeus Traffic Manager deployment options and its key capabili-
ties, including TCP offload, traffic buffering, concurrency control, and HTTP optimiza-
tions. You will learn how Zeus Traffic Manager offloads compute-intensive tasks, and
its integrated HTTP content caching reduces the load on system infrastructure. The
session will demonstrate how Zeus Traffic Manager can be deployed in the manner
that best suits business needs: as software for Linux or Solaris servers, as a Virtual
Appliance for many Virtualization platforms (VMware Virtual Infrastructure, VMware
vSphere, XenServer, and OracleVM), and on any supported Cloud infrastructure plat-

form (including Rackspace Cloud, Joyent, and Amazon EC2). The session will also
touch upon the different administration and diagnostics interfaces of Zeus Traffic Man-
ager, including the Web-based administration interface, SOAP, and Command Line
APIs.
You will also learn how Zeus Traffic Manager can give greater control over managing
application traffic with Zeus TrafficScript. It’s a simple scripting language, built right in-
to the core of Zeus Traffic Manager. It gives finer control over how individual requests
are optimized, routed, and transformed, enabling traffic management rules to be cre-
ated using Java™ extensions.
The speaker will continue with the optional features of this platform, including real-time
analytics (which provide deep insight into application traffic, supporting operational
staff when diagnosing problems and anomalies, and test and development staff in un-
derstanding how clients interact with their applications), application firewall module
(which adds a full Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) Web ap-
plication firewall for complete and scalable application protection), and application au-
to-scaling (which interacts with virtualization and cloud platforms to control how an ap-
plication is resourced in response to load and performance).
Zeus Traffic Manager Recommended Use
In the course of the session, you will learn what kind of companies Zeus Traffic Man-
ager is targeted at, as well as what kind of optimization metrics it can manage. The
session will present how high-loaded content-enabled applications (CRM, BPM, ECM,
CMS) and composite content platforms can utilize Zeus Traffic Manager. The speaker
will enlist content management systems, social networks, information access services,
engagement and collaboration systems, and publishing services that may find this so-
lution especially useful. The speaker will recommend some other similar Cloud prod-
ucts and Cloud Vendors that can also be suitable for various business needs.
Zeus Traffic Manager Challenges
The speaker will note the challenges that are common for traffic management tools
and services developed to operate in the Cloud Environment. The speaker will touch
upon other challenges related to traffic management and monitoring tools, including
customization of traffic management policies and requirements to have necessary
knowledge on networking, particular programming languages, and monitoring exten-
sions.
Finally, you will be able to participate in a question-and-answer session, discussing the
tasks related to your specific Cloud Computing needs.
