- You can improve your TOEFL score by using the strategies recommended by Dr. Pamela Sharpe, author of one of the most widely used books for TOEFL preparation. In this presentation, Dr. Sharpe shares some of the strategies that have helped more than one million students succeed on the TOEFL. Hello. I’m Pamela Sharpe and I have been a teacher for more than 40 years. I have been helping students prepare for the TOEFL . Today I’m here to help you. Together we are going to review the top tactic for speaking from notes on the Speaking section of the iBT TOEFL. Are you ready? Let’s begin.
- You don’t have very much time to prepare your notes. That’s why it is important to have the categories that we talked about for each task in a previous module on successful notes.
- Now let’s think about how much to write in the notes. A “script” would include everything that you plan to say with complete sentences. If you try to write a “script,” you will run out of time and you won’t have any notes to support you at the end of your talk. If you write phrases, that won’t take as much time as a script, but you still may not finish your notes before the beep that signals you to begin speaking. It’s best to write words and a few phrases to help you remember your thoughts. If you have the outlines for each task in mind and you write a few notes, you will be able to speak fluently.
- If you don’t feel confident about speaking from notes, you may want to build up to it. Begin practicing by writing out a script. Then take the script and write the most important phrases. Finally, use the phrases to write notes using words. Let me show you what I mean.
- This is a script for Task 2. Here is the question: Some people think that it is important to set goals in order to succeed. Other people think that good luck influences success. Which do you think is more important—goals or luck, and why do you think so? Use specific reasons or examples to support your opinion. This is a good answer, but it would be impossible to write it all down in 15 seconds. Now, let’s see how the same answer would look if you wrote your notes in phrases.
- Here are phrases to help you remember the information from the script. This is much shorter, but it is still too much information to write in the 15-second preparation time. So let’s see how your notes would look if you used words instead of phrases.
- This is still a lot to write in such a short preparation time, but I think you see how to work on your notes. To prepare for the Speaking section, you have to learn how to write notes instead of a script, and you have to be able to speak, using words to help you organize your talk. You can do it! Start with a script if you feel more comfortable, but try to reach a point in your preparation when you can speak from words. And please remember the outlines for each task that we talked about earlier. The outlines will help you organize the words in your notes.
- Use these strategies and you will begin to feel more confident . Now you will be ready to practice for the Speaking section of the iBT TOEFL.
