The Holy Scripture Bhagavad-Gita is one of the
most important Hindu scriptures. It is revered as a
sacred scripture of Hinduism, and considered as one
of the most important philosophical classics of the
world. The Bhagavad-Gita comprises 700 verses,
and is a part of the Mahabharata. The teacher of
the Bhagavad-Gita is Lord Krishna, who is revered
by Hindus as a manifestation of the Lord Himself,
and is referred to within as Bhagavan – the Divine
One. The content of the Gita is the conversation
between Krishna and Arjuna taking place on the
battlefield before the start of the Kurukshetra
War. Responding to Arjuna’s confusion and moral
dilemma, Krishna explains to Arjuna his duties as
a warrior and prince and elaborates on different
Yogic and Vedantic philosophies, with examples and
analogies. The Holy Scripture contains 18 chapters
and these chapters are divided into Yogas. Among
these yogas, Karma Yoga is essentially Acting, or
doing one’s duties in life as per his/her dharma, or
duty, without concern of results – a sort of constant
sacrifice of action to the Supreme. It is action
done without thought of gain. In a more modern
interpretation, it can be viewed as duty bound
deeds done without letting the nature of the result
affecting one’s actions. This wonderful magazine
Karma is brought to the readers without expecting
anything. As Lord Krishna answers Arjuna and
clarifies all the doubts, Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar
answer to the Devotees and clarifies all the doubts

During the past issues, I explained many intricate points
of Vedic Astrology. In this issue also I wish to explain
about the planets in details. Only by knowing the power of
the planets in an individual’s horoscope, one can get a clear
conclusion about the individual. The Atharva Veda gives great
ideas about the planets and stars even long back before the
telescopes were invented. The Astronomy tells about various
stars and constellation of stars. But the Vedic Astrology speaks
about twenty seven stars and the nature of the persons born in
that particular star. This is only a guidline. The nature will vary
according to the planets’ position I the horoscope. Anyone,
those who wish to know more and more about the planets’
position in their horoscope and to solve the problems in the
spiritual way as per the norms of Atharva Veda can contact me

aol.com. In this issue I am going to write about the stars and the
nature of the persons born in that particular star. I have divided
into three parts. There are twenty seven stars. The first part will
tell about nine stars, the second part will tell about the next nine
stars and the third part will tell about the remaining nine stars.
Ashwini Nakshtra
Devata for Ashwini Nakshatra is Ashwi or the Duality known
as Aswini Kumar
Twins, the physician
of the Gods. Symbol
- the head of a horse.
So, by the influence
of this star the native
is expected to be
equestrian (horse-
ride) or a soldier,
also a physician with
marvelous power to
heal. It is possible,
in the horoscopes
of these physicians
it will be seen
that the Graha

in Aswini Nakshatra. The Puranas state that the two Aswini
Kumaras were born of mother Sanga and father Ravi. The
mother held the solar semen in her nostrils, for otherwise she
could not hold it, it is so strong. They are the twins of Sanga and
therefore this Nakshatra is supposed to produce twins, Those
born in the Aswini star are scrupulous, prosperous, obedient,
truthful, and obtain all comports. They are endowed with
good family and children and are wealthy. They are daring,
handsome and moneyed. They are capable administrators,
cruel, of big body and respected. They sacrifice money, are of
good conduct and enjoyers. They are quick and candid, knower
of scriptures, rational and succeed in quarrels. They are long
handed and wide eyed. They are respected by kings and sweet
spoken. They are daring, arrogant, intelligent, and contain some
symbol on their girdle. They are fickle and undertake traveling.
They are not independent, but strong. Those born in the first
quarter are daring, carry on fire associated jobs, stingy and court
other women.
Bharani Nakshatra
This is the birth star of the planet Raaghu. It extends from
13:20 to 26:40. Symbol: Orifice of the womb (oss-mouth). It is
possible to have an idea of the nature of Bharani Nakshatra from
the nature of Raaghu, Mangal and Yama. To take Raaghu first,
Raaghu gives extravagant enjoyment of material pleasure and is
later on the cause of sorrow, 2. Mangal gives courage, strength,
exaltation and hope, 3. Yama purity, cleanliness, justice and
integrity. The sense of restraint is also Yama’s gift; he is the lord
of Dharma, a stern disciplinarian, a ruthless expositor of truth,
and a refuge for kings and law-abiding subjects. We should
not always confine his interpretation to his being only the lord
of death; he is the great judicature, the ultimate dispenser of

reward and punishment. The Nakshatra, of which he is the
devata (God), is also in consequence the giver of whatever is
good, pure, truthful and honest. The etymological meaning of
Bharani is what deserves to be cultivated and preserved that
is dependence, servitors, retainers or anything by which living
is earned, for example salary. Those born in the Bharani star
incur the displeasure of others; they are enjoyers, obedient
and learned; they fear water and get the wealth of bad people.
They know the scriptures, rationale, intelligent and win the
quarrels. They bear scars on their body due to injuries. They are
good speakers and suffer from heart diseases. They are stable,
knowledgeable and truthful. They are long lived. They are also
determined, and proud. Some of them, who has the evil planets
in their ascendant or lagna will not tolerate others’ prosperity.
Those born in the first quarter are kingly, with good qualities,
daring, winners of wars, mixed results with family and friends,
wide eyed, golden complexioned, and always carry weapons.
Krithika Nakshatra:
This is the birth star of Moon. Many constellations gather at
the tail end of Krithika group. It extends from Mesha 26:40.
The residuary 10: degree falls in Rishabha. The Devata is Agni.
Agni is the great purifier, the great consumer of and the giver
of light, heat and brightness. Agni causes the fire of life and the
drive. It is also the spark of life. Without fire, creation would
not exist. Agni is at the base of creation and of the continuation
of existence. It consumes everything. The fire of digestion in
the human system and the external fire for cooking are only
different manifestation of the same principle, which is Agni.
Agni is the symbol of brightness and brilliance, all weapons
with fire-power. And other things of the same category come
within the range of Krithika group. The fire is considered as
purifier; for it burns away all that is wicked, dark and dull, also
all that is low and sinful and inauspicious in the world. The
dross thus blazed away, only effulgence and light remain. Fire
gives the earth its activity and dynamic and revives it after the
spells of cold that periodically inflict comatose condition of the
earth. It is easy enough to deduce from fire the causal effect of
the Krithika group. Mangal is the lord of that part of Krithika,
which is in Mesha rasi and Mangal is like a mass of lightning
in shining splendor. So, the Krithika in Mesha is devastatingly
brilliant, the effulgence being closely associated with also an
incendiary character. The Krithika of Rishaba rasi is brilliant
but unlike the Krithika of Mesha, not incendiary. The Lord of
Rishaba rasi is Sukra and Sukra stands for worship of beauty,
poetry and imagination. He is radiantly white like snow. He is
also the encyclopedic expounder of all branches of learning. It
follows that the Krithika of Rishabha is brilliant but the brilliance
does not burn, it is soft, sweet, and benign. The Krithika of
Mesha rasi is doubtless brilliant; it has plenty of heat which
burns. The Krithika of Rishabha has on the contrary a softened
radiance, a wave of brightness that does not hurt. Those born in
the star Krithika are bereft of friends and family; endowed with
son and they enjoy life and are very prosperous. They suffer
from hunger and they are without strength and money; they
undertake purposeless traveling but recollect the help rendered
by others. They are very harsh, and do jobs forbidden. They
are cruel and do good jobs and they also have defective face.
They are bright, instant angry and run after other women. They
are heavy eaters and fiery. They are stingy, intelligent, famous,
and successful, loved by partner, with property earned by
themselves, white haired, afraid of wind and carry the symbols
of til and fish. Those born in the first quarter are capable doers
of jobs, are served by many, moneyed, enjoyers and carry out
big jobs. They respect theirs parents and some of them are
leaders of army. They serve the king or government in the most
sincere manner.
Rohini Nakshatra
The word is derived from Rohan, which means to rise or to
bring into existence. It extends in the Rishaba rasi from 10
degree to 23:20. The lord is Sukra and the symbol is a Cart
drawn by Cows. The Devata is Brahma, the prime creator of
all things living, from the meanest insect to Man, the beauty of
the weird and the paragon of animals. Rohini group therefore
encompasses everything that comes within the range of
creation—beasts, birds, animals etc. It would also connote the
process of growing, begetting, birth, production etc, in brief,
production, birth and creation. Rising means - process of
ascending, this is to say the creative evolution, the cultivation
and the improvement. Mythology describes Rohini as the wife
of Moon. Of all the 27 Stars-all wives of Moon-Rohini is said
to have been fond of fine dress, cosmetics and decor and was
the most beloved of Moon. The Rohini is, in the line with this,
considered to be the cause of a taste for fine dress, perfume,
and other articles of posh living. Creation continues to exist
mainly on the basis of food; and Rohini is supposed to be the
cause of food. The direct and immediate cause of food is Agni
and Brahma the remote cause. From this point of view the God
who gives food, that is Agni, is the spiritual principle of Rohini
Nakshatra and because, Brahma the remote cause of food is also
the Devata of Rohini; the range of influences of this group runs
over the whole gamut of the visible and invisible animal world.
Those born in the star Rohini are agriculturists, experts, well
behaved, handsome, good speakers and poets. They are stable
minded, respected, enjoyers and interested in love making.
They are of sweet-speech, intelligent, capable and bright. They
are long-lived and perform accepted jobs, religious, truthful
and help those who have helped them. They are respected by
kings. They respect gods and Brahmins and know the science of
meters and metaphors. They are able and determined servants
of their lords. They are endowed with good looking hands and
wide forehead, handsome, independent, loved by their children,
experts, wealthy with respect to corns and money, have desire
to wear new clothes, suffer from eye diseases, little feared and
play with women. Those born in the first pada of Rohini are
endowed with red hairs, daring, candid, and cruel.
Mrigashira Nakshatra
Mrigashira Nakshatra extends from after 23:20 in Rishaba
rasi up to 6:40 in Mithunam. Presiding deity is Moon and the
symbol is Antelope or Deer. The word Mriga represents forests,
gardens, a search, a seeking to find, to roam about in the forests
and a hunter, to seek, to blaze the trail, a guide and preceptor.
An erotic affair, beauty of the countenance with particular
emphasis on the radiant luster of the face, because of Moon. To

seek as the primary characteristic of the star, to discover hidden
treasures after the churning of the Sea, the Samudra Manthan
of the Hindu Mythology, the mother, motherly conduct that is
to say maternal instincts, self-sacrifice without hope of requital
etc. Moon is the lord of the mind, so all mental attitude, good or
bad, sympathies and antipathies, patience and impatience, the
fidgetiness and placidity, imagination, the gift of poetry, purity,
sweetness and light, physical and mental aspects, all these
come within this star and when things of sweetness and light of
physic as also of the mind, both derivatives from Moon. Moon
is a sub-Graha around the earth and that is why the influence
of Moon on all that happens in the earth is so paramount. And
again that is why the influence of Moon on both the body and
mind is simultaneously so very great. Sukra and Moon both are
female grahas (planets) with difference that while Moon is the
Lord of motherhood, maternal instincts and all that, Sukra is
the lord of feminine beauty, the structure of feminine form, the
physical excellence of women and all that. In the former there
is elegance and dignity of the feminine while in the latter, the
physical beauty and the lure of feminine form which leads a male
captive dominates. Moon is the lord of marine products and of
medicines; that it was from the sea that Moon raised. And it is
to Moon that the influences and causalities have to be traced.
Those born in the Mrigashira star are truthful, handsome; enjoy
wealth and prosperity, pure in heart, bright, sage-like and fickle
minded. They are interested in learning, obedient, always loving
teachers, friendly with the king and respected by kings. They
are enthusiastic, feared, monied, lovable, and knowledgeable
in architecture, kingly and good at administration. They are
pleasant spoken, intelligent and affectionate to their mother.
They are quick and arrogant and they hate others. Those born
in the first pada are well built, moneyed, killers of father, serve
the king, are afraid of family and always thinking about the next
world.
Ardra Nakshatra
In Mithunam, from 6:40 to 20: The presiding deity is the Rudra,
the wielder of the trident and the symbol is a tear-drop. The lord
ofArdra is Mercury, when Surya entersArdra the earth is said to
be starting its menstrual course. Ardra means wet or surcharged
with water, which is fat. Because the earth is running her
menstrual course there are tear drops falling one after another.
From Rudra comes all suffering, persecutions and oppressions,
anger, ferocity of countenance or hideousness of noise. Rudra
is another name of Shiva, the Five Faced (Panchanana). In
knowledge, asceticism, renunciation, as also in enjoyment,
he is the supreme consummation of all desires. He is a blue-
throated one, the wielder of the most tremendous powers, what
could not be attempted far less achieved by other Gods, when
the churned Ocean at the time of Samudra Manthan exhaled
poison Siva achieved quite simply by holding the exhalation
in his throat. On one side he is the symbol of the most perfect
placidity and serenity, on the other hand he is the symbol of
all that is terrible. He holds the great serpent on his head and
on his forehead crescent Moon with his sweet-soft light. He is
at the same time the most peaceful and also the most terrible.
And in all these are to be traced the intrinsic characteristics
of Ardra. Superficially, on the surface of it, Ardra stands for
suffering, hardness, cruelty, murder, prison, theft, adultery etc.
The root characteristic is oppression-in order to purify. All male
kidney trouble and connected urethral disease comes within
the jurisdiction of Ardra; so also uterine diseases of the female.
Those born in the Ardra star are soft, stable minded, strong,
earning by sacrifice, afflicted by sickness, fear and angry.
They suffer due to hunger, hard bodied, lovable, forget the
help rendered by others, experts in trade and commerce, cruel,
having many relatives, ill advisers and hate all. Those born in
Ardra are with pride, of lower levels and do jobs which are
forbidden. They are bereft of money and corns. Such people are
poets, little-learned, long lived, and little interested in things.
Those born in the first pada are very kind hearted and pleasant
faced, experts, with good qualities, warriors, learned, famous,
worshipers of gods, and help others.
Punarvasu Nakshatra
Spread from 20: degree Mithuna up to 3:20 of Kataka.
Presiding deity is Aditi, the Lords are Mercury and Moon
and the symbol is Quiver (receptacle for arrows). The word
Punarvasu is derived from Punar+ Vasu, which means return,
renewal, restoration or repetition. The 12 Adityas were born of
Kasyapa in the womb of Aditi. The 12 Vasus are Indra, Vishnu,
Vaga, Twasta, Varun, Aryama, Pusha, Mitra, Agni, Parjyanya,
Vivaswan and Dinakara. The mother Aditi of whom the Gods
are born is the repository of everything good-truth, generosity,
magnanimity, purity, aristocracy, beauty and renown. It follows
that this star is the cause for these virtues. To start afresh after
having once broken off, to start a new life, to come back from
a distant land-all these are signified by Punarvasu. It stands for
freedom from restriction and limitation, and boundless space.
Those born in the star Punarvasu are endowed with children,
good qualities, wealthy and they indulge in bringing difference
of opinion among friends. They speak very clearly and are
secretive in their dealings. They are learned in the sciences and
interested in personal decoration with gems and gold ornaments.
They are givers and famous. They are religious, attractive,
carry out works of other women. They are tolerant, satisfied
with small things and fast movers. They collect a good circle of
friends; daily eat good food, scarifier and worship lord Vishnu.
They are peaceful, happy, enjoying and endowed with good
progeny. Those born in the Punarvasu star are noted to be long
lived, loved by wife, handsome, interested in pomp, of good
heart, high in conduct, with low voice, like cereals, intelligent,
thinkers, and some possess fish sign on stomach. Those born in
the first pada of Punaravasu star are stingy, serve, old people,
with sensual looks, affected by sickness, unstable, intelligent,
cruel, daring and capable, handsome and hate people.
Pushya Nakshatra
Spread from 3:20 to 16:40 of Kataka. The Lord of this star is
Moon and the symbol is teat of the Cow, the word etymologically
means to nourish and that again means to preserve, to protect,
replenish, multiply and strengthen. Everything of the very
best comes within the scope of this Star. Enjoyment of wealth
and prosperity follows from it. Guru is described as the great
teacher of all creation from amoebae to the Gods and is the
source of all knowledge and wisdom. The mystery of creation

is no mystery to him. He is the eloquent preceptor, the wise
minister, pontific and the head of all religious ceremonies.
He takes pleasure in all worshipful ritual. And that is why the
Pushya is composed of these virtues. It has been described as
blossoming and flourishing. It is the mouth of Orion. Those born
in the star Pushya are wealthy, happy, respected, stable minded,
endowed with good looks and are loved by women. Those born
in the star Pushya are wealthy, happy, respected, stable minded,
endowed with handsome body; respecting parents, following
their religion, and most obedient. They command money and
vehicles of novelty. They are important persons in the world,
knowledgeable in the science of spells and respected by kings.
They retain their stand, and are happy. Some of them are
characterized by the presence of fish symbol on the hands and
feet. They are endowed with all good qualities, short tampered,
and interested in the discussion on scriptures.
Those born in the first pada of Pushya are cruel, daring, famous,
devoted to work and endowed with children. They go to other
countries and become wealthy. They are respected by their
relatives.
Ashlesha Nakshatra
Spread from 16:40’ to 30: degree of Kataka, the Moon is the
lord of this star. It is the birth star of Kethu and the symbol
of this star is coiled up snake. It is the nature of a snake to
hide himself, to encircle and entwine, to creep on the chest, to
embrace, and to enjoy or unite surreptitiously. All these are the
attributes of Ashlesha also. The cunningness of the serpent, its
devious nature, the burning sensation of poison and pain along
with all consequences that poison connotes are to be read in the
constitution of Ashlesha. The virtues and vices of the serpent
are all in it. Moon in Aslesha sick lied over with various faults
in great intensity. Whoever would have his or her karmathipathi
(Lord of the 10th house) or bhagyathipathi (Lord of the 9th
house) in this star would run the risk of having all his or her
principal acts in life handicapped, jeopardized or spoiled by
many kinds of danger and obstruction. If the Lagna is in this star,
the native would possibly be of wildly disposition. Such people
would like to work in secret and their words would carry the
sting of poison. Those born in the star Aslesha are cruel, daring
and angry; according to Narasimha Prayoga Parijata of Atharva
Veda, some of these people are probably co-habit with people
of same sex and animals like cow. They travel aimlessly, do
undesirable jobs, harmful to his own and other people; they are
proud and suffer on account of sex starvation. They are angry
and are strong like lion; they know Brahman and dependent on
others for life. They are cruel to all beings, pay fines by doing
sinful acts, unstable minded, and fearful. They are always sad,
serve others, short tempered, and vary bad persons. They are
childish, slow in the work of their lord; wide eyed, some of
them endowed with fish sign in eyes, develop enmity with his
own people, highly stingy and stubborn. Those born in the first
pada are learned and dignified. They are knowledgeable and
follow the instructions of the religious discussions. They are
intelligent and good speakers. They are independent and know
other’s jobs and respected by kings.

stars. I pray Lord Shiva and Vanadurga to shower their entire
blessings on all of us to have a trouble free and comfortable life.

Chettinad Kalan Kudamilagai Baby corn pirattal
(Baby corn mushroom capsicum masala)
Ingredients
Baby corn-6
Capsicum-1(medium sized)
Mushroom-20
Big onion-1
Tomato-1
(The following vegetables can also be added)
Carrot-1
Potato-1
Peas-a handful
To grind
Coconut-3 table spoons
Pottukadalai-1 table spoon
Red chillies-6
Kasakasa-1 teaspoon
Fennel seeds-1 teaspoon
Clove-1
Cardamom-1
Cinnamon-a small piece
Procedure
Grind the items given in ‘To grind’ to a smooth paste. Cut the
vegetables available from the above into small pieces. Mince
the onion and tomatoes. Keep the kadai in the stove. In two
tablespoons of oil season the curry with a small piece of cinnamon,
clove, fennel seeds and curry leaves. Add the chopped onions.
Once the onions turn transparent add the minced tomatoes.
When the tomatoes get smashed, first add potatoes, carrots, peas
and corn pieces and cook in low fire adding little water for 8
to 10 minutes.(You can also pressure cook the vegetables for a
whistle). Once you feel all the above vegetables are cooked add
the mushroom and capsicum pieces. You will find water coming
out from capsicum. This water will be enough for the capsicum
to get cooked. Add the required quantity of salt. It will roughly
take 5 minutes for the mushrooms and capsicum to get cooked.
Now mix the grinded masala in quarter cup of water and add to
the curry. Check for the taste. If salt is needed add a little. Keep
on stirring till the curry turns thick (In the form of a masala curry).
Garnish with coriander leaves
Kathirikkai Malli Pachadi
(Brinjal Cilantro Curry).
Ingredients
Brinjal-4 medium sized
Big onion-1 or small onions (10)
Tomato-1
Coriander leaves-a small bunch (1 cup cut Coriander leaves)
Sambar powder-1 teaspoon
Green chillies-2
Tamarind paste-1/2 teaspoon (1/4 qty used for sambar)
Thoor dhal-1 handful (to be cooked one whistle shorter than for
sambar)
To season
Small jeera-1 teaspoon
Broken urudh dhal-1 teaspoon
Curry leaf-little
Procedure
Keep the kadai in the stove. In one teaspoon of ghee or cooking
oil season the curry with the items given in ‘to season’. Add the
chopped onions, tomatoes, green chili and cut brinjal pieces one
by one and saute nicely for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the water to the
cooked dhal (1 cup) and the sambar powder. Cook for 3 more
minutes. The brinjals will be almost cooked now. Now, add the

tamarind juice, salt needed and the cooked dhal. Allow it to cook
for 2 more minutes. Now add the chopped coriander leaves. Wait
for one boil and switch off the stove. The curry should be semi
solid with the brinjals rightly cooked. Over cooking will make the
brinjal pieces smashed.
Chettinad Pavakkai masala
(Bitter gourd or karela curry)
Ingredients
Pavakkai-2(medium sized)
Small onion-30 or big onion 2
Tomatoes-2
Garlic-10
Sambar powder-2 teaspoons
Tamarind juice-1/2 teaspoon
Coriander leaves-little
Jaggery Powder- 2 teaspoons
Mince the onions and tomatoes in a chopper or cut the onions and
garlic into very small pieces. Rotate the tomatoes once in a mixie
to crush them. Cut the pavakkai also into small pieces.
Procedure
Keep the kadai in the stove. In two table spoons of oil season the
curry with 1 teaspoon of mustard, 1 spoon small jeera and curry
leaves. After the mustard seeds splitter, add the minced onions,
garlic and sauté till they turn transparent. Now add the pavakkai
pieces and keep the stove in medium flame and cook the pieces
without adding water. When you feel that the pieces are almost
cooked add the crushed tomatoes sambar powder and the required
salt and the tamarind juice. Let this cook for 5 more minutes. Now
add 2 teaspoons of jaggery powder and keep the stove in sim. You
will notice oil separating. Now switch off the stove. Garnish with
coriander leaves.
Mushroom Fry.
Ingredients
Fresh mushrooms-100gms (cut into 4 pieces)
Big onion-1
Tomato-1
Ginger garlic paste-1 teaspoon
Sambar powder-2 teaspoon
Turmeric powder-1/2 teaspoon
Coriander leaves –little
Mint leaves-little
For seasoning
Cinnamon-2 small pieces
Brinji leaf-a small one
Clove-2
Cardamom-2
Fennel seeds-1 teaspoon
Green chillies-2 spitted
Mint leaves-little
Mushrooms should not be washed for a long time in water as it
will absorb water. First wipe it with a soft dry towel or a tissue
paper and then with a wet one. Cut into pieces. Cut the onions
and tomatoes also. Split the chilies. Keep the kadai in the stove.
Season it with the items given in ‘to season’ in 1 table spoon of
oil. Saute the onions, tomatoes and the chillies. Add ginger garlic
paste and stir nicely. Once the raw smell of ginger garlic paste
goes add the mushroom pieces, sambar powder and turmeric
powder. Saute for 3 to 4 minutes. You will find water oozing out
of mushrooms. Now add very little water (3 to 4 tablespoons) and
the salt required. Close the kadai with a lid. Keep the stove in
medium fire. The mushrooms will get cooked within 5 minutes.
So after 5 minutes open the lid and see. If there is excess water
increase the flame and cook till there is not much water content.
Now the fry is ready. Garnish with coriander leaves while serving.

Chow Chow Koottucurry
(Chayote Squash Koottu Curry)
Ingredients
Chow Chow-1 medium size
Green chilli-1
Big onion-1/2(finely chopped)
Sambar powder-1/2 teaspoon
Turmeric powder-1/2 teaspoon
Coconut milk-1 tablespoon
To season
Ghee-1 teaspoon
Cumin seeds-1 teaspoon
Broken urudh dhal-1 teaspoon
Curry leaf-little
Procedure
Cut the vegetable into small pieces. Cook the dhal in a kadai in 2
cups of water. When the dhal is almost cooked add the vegetable
along with 1 ½ cups of water.Add the green chili, turmeric, onions
and the chili powder. Half close the kadai and cook in medium
fire for 10 minutes. When the vegetable is almost cooked add the
salt needed and allow it to cook for 5 more minutes.Always see to
it that the curry does not get thick. If found so add little water and
bring to a boil. Switch off the stove. In the seasoning pan season
the koottucurry with the items given in’ To season’ in little bit of
ghee. This ghee will give a wonderful taste to the dish. If going
to be used immediately, coconut milk can be added. It will enrich
the taste. If you intend to give to young kids, coconut milk can
be avoided.
Vazhai Thandu Koottu
(Banana stem curry)
Ingredients
Broken green gram (pasiparuppu)-1 handful (1/4 cup)
Green chili-4
Chopped small onion-10
Curry leaf-little
Small jeera-1 teaspoon
Coconut milk-2 tablespoon
Cutting the Thandu (banana stem)
Remove the thick outer portion of the stem and get smooth stem.
Make thin round slices, while making each slice slightly rotate
your finger from the centre of the slice. If your finger gets hold
of a fiber, the rest of the fiber will get wound to your finger (2
seconds for each slice).Put these in a vessel of water mixed with
a spoon of curd or butter milk (butter milk will help the thandu
to retain its white color). Once all the slices are made, chop them
into small pieces, keeping together 5 or 6 slices together. If you
hold a small stick like thing inside the vessel having the cut pieces
and rotate slowly, the remaining fiber will get wound in that stick.
Procedure
Cook the dhal in a big kadai. Once the dhal is well cooked, add
the cut vazhai thandu pieces, chili and onion. Add a cup of water.
Close the kadai and cook for 10 minutes in slow fire. Open the lid
and add little salt (remember that this thandu can’t hold too much
salt). Bring to a boil and switch off the stove. Add the coconut
milk. Season the koottu with little small jeera and curry leaf in
a teaspoon of ghee in a separate kadai and add to the koottu. If
you want to store the koottu for the next day, coconut milk can
be avoided.
Karma 12
Karate is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Islands in what
is now Okinawa, Japan. It was developed from indigenous
fighting methods called te and Chinese kenpo. Karate is a
striking art using punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes,
and open-handed techniques such as knife-hands (karate
chop). Grappling, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point
strikes are taught in some styles. A karate practitioner is
called a karateka.
Karate developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom prior to its 19th
century annexation by Japan. It was brought to the Japanese
mainland in the early 20th century during a time of cultural
exchanges between the Japanese and the Ryukyuans. In
1922 the Japanese Ministry of Education invited Gichin
Funakoshi to Tokyo to give a karate demonstration. In 1924
Keio University established the first university karate club in
Japan and by 1932; major Japanese universities had karate
clubs. In this era of escalating Japanese militarism, the name
was changed from “Chinese hand” to “empty hand” both of
which are pronounced karate – to indicate that the Japanese
wished to develop the combat form in Japanese style. After
the Second World War, Okinawa became an important
United States military site and karate became popular among
servicemen stationed there.
The martial arts movies of the 1960s and 1970s served to
greatly increase its popularity and the word karate began to
be used in a generic way to refer to all striking-based Oriental
martial arts. Karate schools began appearing across the world,
catering to those with casual interest as well as those seeking
a deeper study of the art.
Shigeru Egami, Chief Instructor of Shotokan Dojo, opined
“that the majority of followers of karate in overseas countries
pursue karate only for its fighting techniques...Movies and
television...depict karate as a mysterious way of fighting
capable of causing death or injury with a single blow...the
mass media present a pseudo art far from the real thing.”
Shoshin Nagamine said “Karate may be considered as the
conflict within oneself or as a life-long marathon which can
be won only through self-discipline, hard training and one’s
own creative efforts.”
For many practitioners, karate is a deeply philosophical
practice. Karate-do teaches ethical principles and can have
spiritual significance to its adherents. Gichin Funakoshi,
“Father of Modern Karate” titled his autobiography Karate-
Do: My Way of Life in recognition of the transforming nature
of karate study. Today karate is practiced for self-perfection,
for cultural reasons, for self-defense and as a sport. In 2005,
in the 117th IOC International Olympic Committee voting,
karate did not receive the necessary two thirds majority vote
to become an Olympic sport. Web Japan, sponsored by the
Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims there are 23
million karate practitioners worldwide. The most popular
styles of Karate are Okinawa, and Anko Itasu.
Okinawa
Karate began as a common fighting system known as te
(Okinawan: ti) among the Pechin class of the Ryukyuans.
After trade relationships were established with the Ming
dynasty of China by King Satto of Chuzan in 1372, some
forms of Chinese martial arts were introduced to the Ryukyu
Islands by the visitors from China, particularly Fujian
Province. A large group of Chinese families moved to
Okinawa around 1392 for the purpose of cultural exchange,
where they established the community of Kumemura and
shared their knowledge of a wide variety of Chinese arts and
sciences, including the Chinese martial arts. The political
centralization of Okinawa by King Sho Hashi in 1429 and
the ‘Policy of Banning Weapons,’ enforced in Okinawa after
the invasion of the Shimazu clan in 1609, are also factors that
furthered the development of unarmed combat techniques in
Okinawa.
There were few formal styles of te, but rather many
practitioners with their own methods. One surviving example
is the Motobu-ryu school passed down from the Motobu
family by Seikichi Uehara. Early styles of karate are often
generalized as Shuri-te, Naha-te, and Tomari-te, named after
the three cities from which they emerged. Each area and its

teachers had particular kata, techniques, and principles that
distinguished their local version of te from the others.
Members of the Okinawan upper classes were sent to China
regularly to study various political and practical disciplines.
The incorporation of empty-handed Chinese wu shu into
Okinawan martial arts occurred partly because of these
exchanges. Traditional karate kata bear a strong resemblance
to the forms found in Fujian martial arts such as Fujian White
Crane, Five Ancestors, and Gangrou-quan. Further influence
came from Southeast Asia— particularly Sumatra, Java, and
Melaka. Many Okinawan weapons such as the sai, tonfa, and
nunchaku may have originated in and around Southeast Asia.
Sakukawa Kanga (1782–1838) had studied pugilism and
staff fighting in China, according to one legend, under the
guidance of Kosokun, originator of kusanku kata. In 1806
he started teaching a fighting art in the city of Shuri that he
called “Tudi Sakukawa,” which meant “Sakukawa of China
Hand.” This was the first known recorded reference to the
art of “Tudi”. Around the 1820s Sakukawa’s most significant
student Matsumura Sokon (1809–1899) taught a synthesis of
te (Shuri-te and Tomari-te) and Shaolin styles. Matsumura’s
style would later become the Shorin-ryu style.
Anko Itosu
Grandfather of Modern Karate Matsumura taught his art to
Itosu Anko (1831–1915) among others. Itosu adapted two
forms he had learned from Matsumara. These are kusanku and
chiang nan. He created the ping’an forms (“heian” or “pinan”
in Japanese) which are simplified kata for beginning students.
In 1901 Itosu helped to get karate introduced into Okinawa’s
public schools. These forms were taught to children at the
elementary school level. Itosu’s influence in karate is broad.
The forms he created are common across nearly all styles of
karate. His students became some of the most well known
karate masters, including Gichin Funakoshi, Kenwa Mabuni,
and Motobu Choki. Itosu is sometimes referred to as “the
Grandfather of Modern Karate.”
In 1881 Higaonna Kanryo returned from China after years
of instruction with Ryu Ryu Ko and founded what would
become Naha-te. One of his students was the founder of Goju-
ryu, Chojun Miyagi. Chojun Miyagi taught such well-known
karateka as Seko Higa, Meitoku Yagi, Miyazato Eichi, and
Seikichi Toguchi, and for a very brief time near the end of his
life, An’ichi Miyagi.In addition to the three early te styles of
karate a fourth Okinawan influence is that of Kanbun Uechi
(1877–1948). At the age of 20 he went to Fuzhou in Fujian
Province, China, to escape Japanese military conscription.
While there he studied under Shushiwa. He was a leading
figure of Chinese Nanpa Shorin-ken at that time. He later
developed his own style of Uechi-ryu karate based on the
Sanchin, Seisan, and Sanseiryu kata that he had studied in
China.
Masters of karate in Tokyo
Kanken Toyama, Hironori Ohtsuka, Takeshi Shimoda,
Gichin Funakoshi, Motobu Choki, Kenwa Mabuni, Genwa
Nakasone, and Shinken Taira. Gichin Funakoshi, founder of
Shotokan karate, is generally credited with having introduced
and popularized karate on the main islands of Japan. Actually
many Okinawans were actively teaching, and are thus equally
responsible for the development of karate. Funakoshi was a
student of both Asato Anko and Itosu Anko (who had worked
to introduce karate to the Okinawa Prefectural School System
in 1902). During this time period, prominent teachers who
also influenced the spread of karate in Japan included Kenwa
Mabuni, Chojun Miyagi, Motobu Choki, Kanken Toyama,
and Kanbun Uechi. This was a turbulent period in the history
of the region. It includes Japan’s annexation of the Okinawan
island group in 1872, the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–
1895), the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), the annexation
of Korea, and the rise of Japanese militarism (1905–1945).
Japan was invading China at the time, and Funakoshi knew
that the art of Tang/China hand would not be accepted; thus
the change of the art’s name to “way of the empty hand.” The
do suffix implies that karatedo is a path to self knowledge,
not just a study of the technical aspects of fighting. Like most
martial arts practiced in Japan, karate made its transition
from jutsu to do around the beginning of the 20th century.
The “do” in “karate-do” sets it apart from karate-jutsu, as
aikido is distinguished from aikijutsu, judo from jujutsu,
kendo from kenjutsu and iaido from iaijutsu.
Gichin Funakoshi
Founder of Shotokan Karate Funakoshi changed the names
of many kata and the name of the art itself, doing so to
get karate accepted by the Japanese budo organization
Dai Nippon Butoku Kai. Funakoshi also gave Japanese
names to many of the kata. The five pinan forms became
known as heian, the three naihanchi forms became known
as tekki seisan as hangetsu, Chinto as gankaku, wanshu as

empi, and so on. These were mostly
political changes, rather than changes
to the content of the forms, although
Funakoshi did introduce some such
changes. Funakoshi had trained in two
of the popular branches of Okinawan
karate of the time, Shorin-ryu and
Shorei-ryu. In Japan he was influenced
by kendo, incorporating some ideas
about distancing and timing into his
style. He always referred to what he
taught as simply karate, but in 1936 he
built a dojo in Tokyo and the style he
left behind is usually called Shotokan
after this dojo.
The modernization and systemization
of karate in Japan also included the
adoption of the white uniform that
consisted of the kimono and the
dogi or keikogi—mostly called just
karategi and colored belt ranks. Both
of these innovations were originated
and popularized by Jigoro Kano, the
founder of judo and one of the men
Funakoshi consulted in his efforts to
modernize karate.
In 1922, Hironori Ohtsuka attended
the Tokyo Sports Festival, where he
saw Funakoshi’s karate. Ohtsuka
was so impressed with this that he
visited Funakoshi many times during
his stay. Funakoshi was, in turn,
impressed by Ohtsuka’s enthusiasm
and determination to understand
karate, and agreed to teach him. In
the following years, Ohtsuka set up a
medical practice dealing with martial
arts injuries. His prowess in martial arts
led him to become the Chief Instructor
of Shindo Yoshin-ryu jujutsu at the age
of 30, and an assistant instructor in
Funakoshi’s dojo.
By 1929, Ohtsuka was registered as
a member of the Japan Martial Arts
Federation. Okinawan karate at this
time was only concerned with kata.
Ohtsuka thought that the full spirit of
budo, which concentrates on defense
and attack, was missing, and that kata
techniques did not work in realistic
fighting situations. He experimented
with other, more combative styles such
as judo, kendo, and aikido. He blended
the practical and useful elements of
Okinawan karate with traditional
Japanese martial arts techniques from
jujitsu and kendo, which led to the birth
of kumite, or free fighting, in karate.
Ohtsuka thought that there was a need
for this more dynamic type of karate
to be taught, and he decided to leave
Funakoshi to concentrate on developing
his own style of karate: Wado-ryu. In
1934, Wado-ryu karate was officially
recognized as an independent style
of karate. This recognition meant a
departure for Ohtsuka from his medical
practice and the fulfillment of a life’s
ambition to become a full-time martial
artist.
Ohtsuka’s personalized style of Karate
was officially registered in 1938 after
he was awarded the rank of Renshi-go.
He presented a demonstration of Wado-
ryu karate for the Japan Martial Arts
Federation. They were so impressed
with his style and commitment that they
acknowledged him as a high-ranking
instructor. The next year the Japan
Martial Arts Federation asked all the
different styles to register their names;
Ohtsuka registered the name Wado-
ryu. In 1944, Ohtsuka was appointed
Japan’s Chief Karate Instructor.
A new form of karate called Kyokushin
was formally founded in 1957 by
Masutatsu Oyama (who was born a
Korean, Choi Yeong-Eui). Kyokushin
is largely a synthesis of Shotokan
and Goju-ryu. It teaches a curriculum
that emphasizes aliveness, physical
toughness, and full contact sparring.
Because of its emphasis on physical,
full-force sparring, Kyokushin is now
often called “full contact karate”, or
“Knockdown karate”. Many other
karate organizations and styles are
descended from the Kyokushin
curriculum.

Organizations (WUKO) recognizes the
following styles of karate in its kata list.
Goju-ryu, Shito-ryu, Shotokan-ryu,
Wado-ryu, Shorin-ryu, Uechi-ryu,
Kyokushinkai, and
Budokan.

During the past issues, by the gracious blessings of theAlmighty
and Swamiji, we discussed about the Spirituality described in
Vedas, other great epics and sayings of great sages and monks.
In this issue we will discuss the spirituality explained in the
great Upanishad named Mundaka Upanishad.
Man is endowed with the special instrument of discrimination,
of judgment, of analysis and synthesis, which among all
animals, he alone possesses. He has to develop this and utilize
it to the best purpose. Through this instrument, he can realize
the Immanent Divinity. Instead, man pesters himself and others
with the question: Where does God reside? If He is real, why
is He not seen? Hearing such queries, one feels like pitying
the poor questioners. For, they are announcing their own
foolishness. They are like the dullards who aspire for university
degrees without taking pains even to learn the alphabet. They
aspire to realize God without putting themselves to the trouble
of practicing the Sadhana required. People who have no moral
strength and purity talk of God and His existence and decry
efforts to see Him. Such people have no right to be heard.
Spiritual Sadhana is based on the holy Sastras. They cannot
be mastered in a trice. They cannot be followed through talk.
Their message is summed up in the Upanishads; hence, they
are revered as authoritative. They are not the products of human
intelligence; they are the whisperings of God to man. They are
parts of the eternal Vedas. The Vedas shine gloriously through
all their parts. The Upanishads are authentic and authoritative,
as they share the glory of the Vedas. They are 1180 in number,
but, through the centuries, many of them disappeared from
human memory and only 108 have now survived. Of these, 13
have attained great popularity, as a result of the depth and value
of their contents.
The sage Vyasa classified the Upanishads and allotted them
among the four Vedas; The Rig-Veda has 21 branches and
each branch has one Upanishad allotted to it. The Yajur Veda
has 109 branches and 109 Upanishads. The Atharva Veda has
50 branches and 50 Upanishads were its share. The Sama
Veda has a thousand branches and the balance, namely, 1000
Upanishads were its share. Thus, the 1180 Upanishads were
assigned by Vyasa to the Four Vedas. Sankaracharya raised
the status of ten among the Upanishads by selecting them
for writing his commentaries and so they became especially
important. Humanity stands to gain or fall by these ten. All who
are seeking human welfare and progress through spirituality
are now apprehending whether even these ten will be forgotten,
for, neglecting them will usher in moral and spiritual disaster.
There is no reason, however, for such fears. The Vedas can
never be harmed. Pundits and those with faith should resolve

to present before humanity these ten Upanishads at least. They
are Isa, Kena, Katha, Prasna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Thaithiriya,
Aithareya, Chandogya and Brihadaranyaka. In this issue we well
discuss the spirituality explained in Mundaka Upanishad.
The Upanishads have also inspired other works on Geography,
Astronomy, Astrology, Economics and Political Theory. The
Vedas and the Upanishads are the very foundation for Sanathana
Dharma and spirituality. There is one interesting feature to be
noted. The Hindu religion has no one Founder as the others have.
That invisible unknown founder is God, the source of all wisdom.
He is the Prophet of this Sanathana Dharma. He is the Founder;
His Grace and His Inspiration manifested through the pure
Sages and they became the spokesmen of this Dharma. When
the moral purity of men degenerates, God takes form as grace
and inspiration in sages and teachers. He has also given through
the Upanishads the Sathya-Jnana, the Wisdom concerning the
Reality.
This Mundaka Upanishad begins with an Invocation, praying
that eye may see auspicious things, the ear may hear auspicious
sounds, and that life may be spent in the contemplation of
the Lord. The teaching of this Upanishad is referred to as
Brahmavidya, either because it describes first the message of
Hiranyagarbha, the Brahma, or because the message relates
the glory of Brahmam. This Upanishad speaks of Brahmavidya
as the mystery which only those with shaven heads and those
who go through a rite of having Fire on the shaven head can
understand. So, it is called Mundaka, or shaven Head. Apart
from this, this Upanishad is honored as the crest of all, since it
expounds the very essence of Brahma Jnana. It is assigned to the
Fourth Veda, the Atharva Veda.
This knowledge has been handed down from teacher to pupil by
word of mouth, enriched and confirmed by experience; it is also
called Paravidya, the knowledge of the Other when it deals with
the attribute less Principle; when it deals with the attribute-full,
the Saguna, the materialized principle, it is called A-paravidya,
the knowledge of the Immanent, not the Transcendent aspect.
These are the two that are found in this Upanishad. They were
taught by Sage Saunaka to Sage Angirasa; that is what the text
announces. The Vedas and the Vedangas deal with Aparavidya.
The Upanishads deal specially with Para-vidya. But, the
interesting thing is: the Apara-vidya leads on to the Para, the
knowledge of Brahmam, which is the goal.
The spider evolves out of itself the magnificent manifestation
of the web; so too, this moving, changing world is manifested
from the causative Brahmam. The changing world is the product
of creator-creation complex. It is true and factual and useful, so
long as one is unaware of the Reality. The utmost that one can
gain by activity, that is to say, holy or sacred activity is Heaven
or Swarga, which has a longer lease of life, but, which has an
end in spite of it. So, the seeker loses all yearning for Heaven;
he/she approaches an elderly teacher full of compassion, who
instructs him/her in the discipline for realizing the Brahmam.
All beings are Brahmam and no other. They all do emanate
from Brahmam. As sparks emanate from fire, as hair grows
on the skin but is different from it, so too beings originate
from Brahmam. Brahmam causes the sun, moon, stars and
planets to revolve in space; Brahmam grants the consequence
of all the acts of beings. The Individual and the Universal are
two birds sitting on the same tree i.e., the human body. The Jivi
(individual) acts, and suffers the consequences of those acts. The
Iswara (universal) sits quiet, as a witness of the other bird. When
the Jivi looks at the Iswara and realizes that it is nothing but an
image, it escapes from grief and pain. When the mind is drawn
by yearning to know the Iswara, all other low desires diminishes
and disappears. Then, knowledge of Atma is attained. The last
mantra of this Upanishad declares that its aim is to make man
attain that Jnana. Munda means head; this Upanishad is the Head
of all Upanishads, we can say.
It has three sections, with two chapters in each. In the first
section, theAparavidya, and in the second, the Paravidya and the
means of mastering them are dealt with. In the third, the nature
of the Reality and of the release from bondage is defined. The
Karma that helps attain the Brahmam is denoted in the mantras.
That is why this Upanishad is respected as very sacred.
The spider, as already indicated, spins out the web from itself
without any extraneous agency; it also takes in the web it has
spun. So too, Creation was effected without an agent and the
Universe emanated. Heaven is the highest attainable stage
through Karma. Of such Karmas or rites, the worship of Fire
called Agnihotra is the chief. The performance of such rites
contributes to the cleansing of the mind. Such cleansing is a
necessary preliminary to Paravidya. The flames that rise high
from the sacrificial altar of fire appear to the performer as if
they are hailing him on to realize the Reality or Brahmam. He
who does the rite with full awareness of the significance of the
mantra is able to reach the Solar Splendor, through the offerings
made; they take him to the region of Indra, the Lord of the Gods.
Only on this basis, Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar does a lot of fire
worship and he recommends fire worship named “Mahayajna”
to his devotees, who need more and more powers.

The Upanishad recommends two types of obligatory Karmas:
Ishta and Poortha. The rite of Agnihotra, adherence to Truth,
Thapas or Asceticism, Veda-adhyayanam or study of the Vedas,
the service offered to guests in one’s home - these are Ishta;
construction of temples, caravan-series, rest-houses, tanks,
planting of avenue trees - such acts are Poortha. These give
consequences that are beneficial but, all such cause-effect chains
are transient, they are fundamentally defective. The entire
Creation is bound up with name and form and so unreal. It can
be described in words and so, limited and circumscribed by the
intellect and the mind. The Paramapurusha, the Supreme Person
alone is eternal, real, and pure. He is the prompter of activity
and the dispenser of consequence. But, He is beyond the eye,
beyond the intellect. Like the spokes of a wheel that radiate from
the hub, that lead from all directions to the centre, all creation
radiates from Him.
To reach the central hub and know that all spokes radiate from it,
the mind is the instrument. Brahmam the target is to be reached
by the arrow-mind. Have your mind fixed on the target and
using the Upanishadic teaching as the bow, shoot straight and
hard, to hit the Brahmam and master. That is to say, the Pranava
or the OM is the arrow; Brahmam is the target. As aforesaid the
mind and thoughts are the base for an individual’s development.
That’s why Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar often says as “you will
live according to your thoughts”.
The Brahmam illumines the Jivi by getting reflected in the
inner consciousness or Anthah-karana. One has only to turn
that consciousness away from the objective world, contact with
which contaminates the mind. Now, train the inner consciousness
to meditate on the OM, with single-pointed attention. Meditate
on the Atma as unaffected by the Jivi, though in him and with
him and activating him. Meditate on Him in the heart, from
which radiate countless nadis, subtle nerves, in all directions. If
this process is followed, one can attain Jnana or Wisdom. The
Universe is an instrument to reveal the majesty of God. The
inner firmament in the heart of man is also equally a revelation
of His Glory. He is the Breath of one’s breath. Since He has no
specific form, He cannot be indicated by words. Nor can His
mystery be penetrated by the other senses. He is beyond the
reach of asceticism, beyond the bounds of Vedic rituals. He can
be known only by an intellect that has been cleansed of all trace
of attachment and hatred, of egoism and the sense of possession.
Jnana alone can grant self-realization. Dhyana can confer
concentration of the faculties; through that concentration, Jnana
can be won, even while in the body. The Brahmam activates
the body through the five vital airs or Pranas. It condescends to
reveal itself in that same body as soon as the inner consciousness
attains the requisite purity. For the Atma is immanent in the
senses, inner and outer, as heat in fuel and as butter in milk.
Now, the consciousness is like damp fuel, soaked in the foulness
of sensory desires and disappointments. When the pool in the
heart becomes clear of the slimy overgrowth, the Atma shines
in its pristine splendor. He who acquires the knowledge of this
Atman is to be revered. For, he is liberated. He has become
Brahmam that which he strove to know and be.
Man is essentially divine. However, he believes himself to be
an individual, limited and temporary, because he is entangled in
the characteristics of the Five Elements, namely, Sound, Touch,
Form,TasteandSmell.Thiserrorbringsaboutjoyandgrief,good
and bad, birth and death. To escape from this association with
the Elements, to rid oneself of the pulls of their characteristics,
is the sign of Liberation, called in Sanskrit as Kaivalya, Moksha
or Mukthi. Names may change; but the achievement is the same.
While entangled in the Five Elements, man is attracted, distracted
or disappointed by them; all this causes distress. Wealth,
possessions - vehicles, buildings - all these re transmutations of
the elements. Man craves for them; when he loses them or fails
to get them, he spurns them. Let us take the Five Elements, one
by one. The living being has the first one, the Earth, as its base.
Water, the second, is the basis for the earth. Water is produced
from Fire, the third element, Fire itself emanating from Wind,
the fourth. Wind or Vayu arises from Ether, or Akasa. Akasa
emerges from the Primal Nature and the Primal Nature is but
the manifestation of one aspect of the majesty of God, or the
Supreme Sovereign Atma, the Paramatma.
Seeking to reach that Paramatma, the source and core of the
Universe, the Individual or Jivi, who has entangled himself in
the elements, has to overcome, by discrimination and steady
practice of detachment, the bonds one by one; such a person
is a Sadhaka; he who wins in this struggle is the Jivan-muktha,
‘Liberated even while alive.’

For the exercise of such discrimination and for the visualization
of one’s innate reality, one has to study the Upanishads. They
are collectively called Vedanta. They form the Jnana kanda
of the Vedas, the section that deals with the Higher Wisdom.
Liberation from the consequences of Ignorance can be secured
only by Knowledge or Jnana. The Upanishads themselves
declare, “Jnaanaad eva thu kaivalyam”: “By Knowledge alone
can freedom be won.”
The term Upanishad denotes the study and practice of the
innate truth: the term, Brahmavidya, denotes the supremacy
of spiritual contemplation; the term, Yogasastra denotes the
mental churning that brings success. What is the fundamental
activity which is required of man? What is the basic thing to be
known? It is only one’s basic reality. The Upanishads describe
the various stages and the various modes of this search for
realizing this. The name is full of significance. ‘Upa’ means
the process of studying with ‘Nishta’ or steadfastness; ‘shad’
means the attainment of the Ultimate Reality. The name Upa-
ni-shad arose for these reasons. The Upanishads teach not only
the principles of Atmavidya; they indicate also the practical
means of realization. They point out not only the duties and
obligations one has to bear, but also the actions to be done and
those to be avoided.
So, whether it is the Gita or the Upanishads or any holy and
spiritual teachings, the teaching is Non-duality, not Duality,
or qualified Monism. The human eye cannot delve into the
minute or the magnitudinous. It cannot read the mystery of the
virus or the atom or the stellar universe. Therefore, scientists
supplement the eye with the telescope and the microscope.
Similarly, sages are able to experience Divinity through
the eye of knowledge, gained by following the Dharma of
moral conduct and spiritual discipline. When the human
eye stands in need of an extraneous instrument to observe
even the insignificant worm and virus, how can one refuse
to go through the process of mantra if he desires to see the
omnipresent transcendent Principle? It is very hard to acquire
the eye of wisdom. Concentration is essential for this. And,
for concentration to develop and stabilize itself, three things
are very important: purity of consciousness, moral awareness
and spiritual discrimination. These qualifications are difficult
of attainment by ordinary folk.
We should read at least the basic teachings of the Upanishads
and try to practice the spirituality taught in those Holy
Scriptures. By practicing the spirituality we all can lead a
comfortable life. There is no caste, creed, region and religion
for practicing spirituality. I thank Almighty and Swamiji for
blessing me with an opportunity to share my thoughts one
spirituality. I pray the Almighty and Swamiji to bless me with
more and more opportunities like this to share my thoughts on
spirituality.

Sri Soolini Durga is the wife of Sri.Sarabeswara. She
is another form of Goddess Parasakthi. There are three
shapes for each and every deity. They are Santham, Ugram
and Maha ugram. It means calm, fearsome and the most
fearsome. SriMeenakshi, Sri Kamakshi are the examples
for calm poses of Goddess Parasakthi. Sri.Durga is the
example for Ugram and Sri Soolini Durga and Prathyangira
Devi are the examples for the most fearsome poses. When
we need the motherly affection we have to pray the Santha
shapes. To get rid of moderate troubles we have to pray ugra
shapes as Sri.Durga. To solve the sever problems we face in
our day to day life we have to pray the Maha ugram poses.
Atharva Veda is the only Veda, which deals with the healing
part. It explains in detail about the different methods of
prayers and rituals to get rid of our problems. Sri.Soolini
Durga plays a vital role in solving the problems faced by
each and every body. Sri.Soolini Durga Hrudayam, a part
of Atharva Veda and an old palm script compiled by a great
monk, “Prapancha sara sara Sangraham” tells in detail about
Sri.Soolini Durga. According to those wonderful writings,
we will see about Sri.Soolini Durga.
Who is Sri.Soolini Durga?
Lord Mahavishnu took the reincarnation as Narasimha.
Narasimha is one of the most fearsome shapes of Lord
Mahavishnu. One of his devotees Prahaaladha. He is from
the family of demons. He had to face a lot of troubles
with his father Hiranyakasibu. Prahaladha prayed Lord
Mahavishnu to rescue him. Hiranyakasibu had got a boon
from Brahma.Hiranyakasibu cannot be killed with any
kind of weapon He can’t be killed by any kind of divine,
human, animal or birds. He can’t be killed either inside
or outside of the place where he lives. With the power of
the boon he started giving troubles to all the human beings
and divine powers. He troubled the sages and monks also.
All prayed Lord Mahavishnu to rescue them from this
demon. The demon forced all to chant Om Hiranyaya
Namaha. Everybody did so. But his own son refused to
do so. He chanted the name of Lord Mahavishnu. Oneday,
Hiranyakasibu asked, “dear son, will your god Mahavishnu
come inside this pillar and save you and kicked a huge pillar
at the main hall of his palace. Lord Mahavishnu took the
most fearsome pose Narasimha and came out of the pillar,
caught the demon took him to the entrance and killed him.
Narasimma’s anger was very severe. Nobody could control
his anger. So. All prayed Lord Shiva to control the anger of
Narasimma. Lord Shiva also took a fearsome pose called
Sarabeswara. He had two feathers. He controlled the anger
of Narasimma and made him cool. Lord Sarabeswara had
two wings. One wing is Sri PrathyangiraDevi and another
wing is Sri.Soolini Durga. Prathyangira Devi and Soolini
Durga are the most fearsome poses of Goddess Parasakthi.
Prathyangira Devi is called as Atharvana Badrakali and Sri.
Soolini Durga is called as Atharvan Rudrakali.She is the
mother of all. She lives in the mountain called Kailash.
As she lives in a hill she is also called as Giri Durga.
She always sits on a lion. She is having eight hands with
different kinds of weapons. Each and every weapon has its
individual significance. Her first right hand is adorned with
a Trishul the second is adorned with a knife, the third one
is adorned with a wheel called as “Chakra” and the fourth
right hand is adorned with an arrow. The shape of the arrow
itself is very different. Normally the arrows will only have
a sharp head. But the arrow that adorns the hand of Sri.
Soolini Durga has a half circle head. The first right hand
is adorned with a rope, the second with a different weapon

called as “Gadha”, the third with a bow to shoot the arrow
and the fourth left hand is adorned with a conch. Why she is
having the wheel, conch and gadha on her hands? Normally
these are the weapons of Lord Mahavishnu. Parasakthi is
the sister of Lord Mahavishnu. He permitted his younger
sister to use his weapons and bless her devotees.
What do we get from Sri.Soolini Durga? She is the rescuer
from enemies. She secures all the wealth and assets. She
helps us to come across all enemies. She cures the mind
and physic. She blesses us with good children. She gives
a lot of knowledge and wisdom. Whenever we call her she
comes instantly to support us. It is very hard to go near her.
If we go near her it is sure that we will come out of all
our troubles. The ways and methods of rituals to get rid of
various problems. To have good kids, those who need the
kids should eat the rice offered to her everyday for a period
of at least 48 days. It is very sure that they will get good
kids. To get rid of the mind related troubles “Panakam”
(sweet water prepared with sugar candy and dried ginger)
is to be offered to her and the offered sweet water is to be
drunk by the person having mental troubles. To get rid of
the enemies we have to light the lamp with mustard oil. To
get rid of the evil spirits we have to offer her butter. She
likes the offerings much and blesses her devotees with their
ambitions fulfilled.
The method of Prayers.
Daily the minimum Abishegam (holy bathe) to be
performed with water and milk. By having this holy bath
she becomes cool and blesses the devotees with cool walk
of life. To attract the mind of a female one should offer betel
leaves, betel nuts with spices like cardamom, nutmeg and
menthol. By this offering she is pleased and she makes the
mind of the girl to turn towards the person. She cures the
different kinds of fever. Fever means not only the hike of
temperature in the physical body. It refers to the heat in the
mind and poverty. She easily removes these kinds of things.
We have another trouble. It is called a Dhrushti or bad eyes
or najar. This is the worst one. By praying Sri.Soolini Durga
on Tuesdays and Fridays with the offering of lemon, we
can easily come across the thing. We face a lot of problems
caused by the nine planets. The invisible planets crate a
lot of things in this visible world. She cures the ailments
caused by the nine planets. She is called as “Aavesa Graha
samharyai Namaha”.She cures all kind of physical and
mind related problems. She is called as “Vyaadhi Naasini”.
The word “Vyadhi” means problems caused by the unseen
forces. By praying her she removes all kinds of problems.
She is called as the best blessing deity. Atharva Veda has
mentioned some easiest ways to get the blessings of Sri
Soolini Durga. One of the easiest ways to get her blessings
is lighting lemon lamps on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays
and performing Ashtottara Sathanama Archana (Chanting
of 108 names of Sri Soolini Durga). Anytime between
08.30 am to 08.00 pm is good to do this simple but effective
worship. Hindu Temple of Ohio is the only temple in the
entire western countries to have Sri Soolini Durga as one

Li t i g a t i o n
is one of
the toughest words in the legal
dictionary. The blessing of the Almighty is
needed along with the power of arguments and the
knowledge of law. There are many attorneys in this universe.
But only a few are very famous. As such there are many human
beings in this universe. But only a few of them get into the
litigation troubles. What are the reasons for all these things?
Even if we think very deeply, we cannot find the proper answers
for these questions. However the Atharva Veda has foreseen all
these things thousands of years back and has found the answers
for these questions. The answer is planets.
What is the connection of planets to the normal walk of human
life? The actions of the entire human race are controlled by
the planets. The ascendant decides the capacity and character
of the human being and the second place decides the power of
speech. If the ascendant is occupied by the fearsome planets
like Sun and Mars, the concerned individual will have the best
leadership qualities and a great litigation attorney. Where as
if the ascendant is occupied by the malefic planets like Saturn

with a civil cause of action to enforce certain laws. The conduct
of a lawsuit is called litigation.
Someone will never enter the doorsteps of the court house
for their entire life time. Someone will spend unnecessarily
for the legal expenses. Somebody will be in the court house
either as a defendant or plaintiff throughout their entire life
time. What is the reason for all these happenings? According
to Atharva Veda the planets are the only reason for all these
kind of problems. The misplacement of the planets make one
to suffer a lot with these kind of legal problems. That too the
combination of the planets Sun and Saturn, Sun and Raaghu,
Moon and Raaghu and Moon and Kethu make one to suffer
much due to the litigations. The special Atharva Vedic Thantric
Rituals to the Atharva Veda Yaksha/Yakshini devathas will get

Cute Puppies For Sale
A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign
advertising the pups and set about Nailing it to a post on the
edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post,
he Felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the Eyes of
a little boy.
Mister,” he said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.”
“Well,” said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of
his neck, “these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good
deal of money.”
The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep
into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it
up to the farmer. “I’ve got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to
take a look?”
“Sure,” said the farmer.
And with that he let out a whistle,”Here,Dolly!” he called.
Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed
by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against
the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.
As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed
something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another
little ball appeared; this One noticeably smaller. Down the
ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner the little pup
began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up....
“I want that one,” the little boy said, pointing to the runt.
The farmer knelt down at the boy’s side and said, “Son, you
don’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play
with you like these other dogs would.”
With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached
down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing
so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg
attaching itself To a specially made shoe. Looking back up at
the farmer, he said, “You see sir, I don’t run too well myself,
and he will need Someone who understands.”

It is revered as a sacred scripture of Hinduism, and considered as one of the most important philosophical classics of the world. The Bhagavad-Gita comprises 700 verses, and is a part of the Mahabharata. The teacher of the Bhagavad-Gita is Lord Krishna, who is revered by Hindus as a manifestation of the Lord Himself, and is referred to within as Bhagavan – the Divine One. The content of the Gita is the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna taking place on the battlefield before the start of the Kurukshetra War. Responding to Arjuna’s confusion and moral dilemma, Krishna explains to Arjuna his duties as a warrior and prince and elaborates on different Yogic and Vedantic philosophies, with examples and analogies. The Holy Scripture contains 18 chapters and these chapters are divided into Yogas. Among these yogas, Karma Yoga is essentially Acting, or doing one’s duties in life as per his/her dharma, or duty, without concern of results – a sort of constant sacrifice of action to the Supreme. It is action done without thought of gain. In a more modern interpretation, it can be viewed as duty bound deeds done without letting the nature of the result affecting one’s actions.   • 5. Karma 3 Swmiji Sri Selvam Siddhar During the past issues, I explained many intricate points of Vedic Astrology. In this issue also I wish to explain about the planets in details. Only by knowing the power of the planets in an individual’s horoscope, one can get a clear conclusion about the individual. The Atharva Veda gives great ideas about the planets and stars even long back before the telescopes were invented. The Astronomy tells about various stars and constellation of stars. But the Vedic Astrology speaks about twenty seven stars and the nature of the persons born in that particular star. This is only a guidline. The nature will vary according to the planets’ position I the horoscope. In this issue I am going to write about the stars and the nature of the persons born in that particular star. I have divided into three parts. There are twenty seven stars. The first part will tell about nine stars, the second part will tell about the next nine stars and the third part will tell about the remaining nine stars. Ashwini Nakshtra Devata for Ashwini Nakshatra is Ashwi or the Duality known as Aswini Kumar Twins, the physician of the Gods. Symbol - the head of a horse. So, by the influence of this star the native is expected to be equestrian (horse- ride) or a soldier, also a physician with marvelous power to heal. It is possible, in the horoscopes of these physicians it will be seen that the Graha for successful medical practice is positioned in Aswini Nakshatra. The Puranas state that the two Aswini Kumaras were born of mother Sanga and father Ravi. The mother held the solar semen in her nostrils, for otherwise she could not hold it, it is so strong. They are the twins of Sanga and therefore this Nakshatra is supposed to produce twins, Those born in the Aswini star are scrupulous, prosperous, obedient, truthful, and obtain all comports. They are endowed with good family and children and are wealthy. They are daring, handsome and moneyed. They are capable administrators, cruel, of big body and respected. They sacrifice money, are of good conduct and enjoyers. They are quick and candid, knower of scriptures, rational and succeed in quarrels. They are long handed and wide eyed. They are respected by kings and sweet spoken. They are daring, arrogant, intelligent, and contain some symbol on their girdle. They are fickle and undertake traveling. They are not independent, but strong. Those born in the first quarter are daring, carry on fire associated jobs, stingy and court other women. Bharani Nakshatra This is the birth star of the planet Raaghu. It extends from 13:20 to 26:40. Symbol: Orifice of the womb (oss-mouth). It is possible to have an idea of the nature of Bharani Nakshatra from the nature of Raaghu, Mangal and Yama. To take Raaghu first, Raaghu gives extravagant enjoyment of material pleasure and is later on the cause of sorrow, 2. Mangal gives courage, strength, exaltation and hope, 3. Yama purity, cleanliness, justice and integrity. The sense of restraint is also Yama’s gift; he is the lord of Dharma, a stern disciplinarian, a ruthless expositor of truth, and a refuge for kings and law-abiding subjects. We should not always confine his interpretation to his being only the lord of death; he is the great judicature, the ultimate dispenser of
  • 6. Karma 4 reward and punishment. The Nakshatra, of which he is the devata (God), is also in consequence the giver of whatever is good, pure, truthful and honest. The etymological meaning of Bharani is what deserves to be cultivated and preserved that is dependence, servitors, retainers or anything by which living is earned, for example salary. Those born in the Bharani star incur the displeasure of others; they are enjoyers, obedient and learned; they fear water and get the wealth of bad people. They know the scriptures, rationale, intelligent and win the quarrels. They bear scars on their body due to injuries. They are good speakers and suffer from heart diseases. They are stable, knowledgeable and truthful. They are long lived. They are also determined, and proud. Some of them, who has the evil planets in their ascendant or lagna will not tolerate others’ prosperity. Those born in the first quarter are kingly, with good qualities, daring, winners of wars, mixed results with family and friends, wide eyed, golden complexioned, and always carry weapons. Krithika Nakshatra: This is the birth star of Moon. Many constellations gather at the tail end of Krithika group. It extends from Mesha 26:40. The residuary 10: degree falls in Rishabha. The Devata is Agni. Agni is the great purifier, the great consumer of and the giver of light, heat and brightness. Agni causes the fire of life and the drive. It is also the spark of life. Without fire, creation would not exist. Agni is at the base of creation and of the continuation of existence. It consumes everything. The fire of digestion in the human system and the external fire for cooking are only different manifestation of the same principle, which is Agni. Agni is the symbol of brightness and brilliance, all weapons with fire-power. And other things of the same category come within the range of Krithika group. The fire is considered as purifier; for it burns away all that is wicked, dark and dull, also all that is low and sinful and inauspicious in the world. The dross thus blazed away, only effulgence and light remain. Fire gives the earth its activity and dynamic and revives it after the spells of cold that periodically inflict comatose condition of the earth. It is easy enough to deduce from fire the causal effect of the Krithika group. Mangal is the lord of that part of Krithika, which is in Mesha rasi and Mangal is like a mass of lightning in shining splendor. So, the Krithika in Mesha is devastatingly brilliant, the effulgence being closely associated with also an incendiary character. The Krithika of Rishaba rasi is brilliant but unlike the Krithika of Mesha, not incendiary. The Lord of Rishaba rasi is Sukra and Sukra stands for worship of beauty, poetry and imagination. He is radiantly white like snow. He is also the encyclopedic expounder of all branches of learning. It follows that the Krithika of Rishabha is brilliant but the brilliance does not burn, it is soft, sweet, and benign. The Krithika of Mesha rasi is doubtless brilliant; it has plenty of heat which burns. The Krithika of Rishabha has on the contrary a softened radiance, a wave of brightness that does not hurt. Those born in the star Krithika are bereft of friends and family; endowed with son and they enjoy life and are very prosperous. They suffer from hunger and they are without strength and money; they undertake purposeless traveling but recollect the help rendered by others. They are very harsh, and do jobs forbidden. They are cruel and do good jobs and they also have defective face. They are bright, instant angry and run after other women. They are heavy eaters and fiery. They are stingy, intelligent, famous, and successful, loved by partner, with property earned by themselves, white haired, afraid of wind and carry the symbols of til and fish. Those born in the first quarter are capable doers of jobs, are served by many, moneyed, enjoyers and carry out big jobs. They respect theirs parents and some of them are leaders of army. They serve the king or government in the most sincere manner. Rohini Nakshatra The word is derived from Rohan, which means to rise or to bring into existence. It extends in the Rishaba rasi from 10 degree to 23:20. The lord is Sukra and the symbol is a Cart drawn by Cows. The Devata is Brahma, the prime creator of all things living, from the meanest insect to Man, the beauty of the weird and the paragon of animals. Rohini group therefore encompasses everything that comes within the range of creation—beasts, birds, animals etc. It would also connote the process of growing, begetting, birth, production etc, in brief, production, birth and creation. Rising means - process of ascending, this is to say the creative evolution, the cultivation and the improvement. Mythology describes Rohini as the wife of Moon. Of all the 27 Stars-all wives of Moon-Rohini is said to have been fond of fine dress, cosmetics and decor and was the most beloved of Moon. The Rohini is, in the line with this, considered to be the cause of a taste for fine dress, perfume, and other articles of posh living. Creation continues to exist mainly on the basis of food; and Rohini is supposed to be the cause of food. The direct and immediate cause of food is Agni and Brahma the remote cause. From this point of view the God who gives food, that is Agni, is the spiritual principle of Rohini Nakshatra and because, Brahma the remote cause of food is also the Devata of Rohini; the range of influences of this group runs over the whole gamut of the visible and invisible animal world. Those born in the star Rohini are agriculturists, experts, well behaved, handsome, good speakers and poets. They are stable minded, respected, enjoyers and interested in love making. They are of sweet-speech, intelligent, capable and bright. They are long-lived and perform accepted jobs, religious, truthful and help those who have helped them. They are respected by kings. They respect gods and Brahmins and know the science of meters and metaphors. They are able and determined servants of their lords. They are endowed with good looking hands and wide forehead, handsome, independent, loved by their children, experts, wealthy with respect to corns and money, have desire to wear new clothes, suffer from eye diseases, little feared and play with women. Those born in the first pada of Rohini are endowed with red hairs, daring, candid, and cruel. Mrigashira Nakshatra Mrigashira Nakshatra extends from after 23:20 in Rishaba rasi up to 6:40 in Mithunam. Presiding deity is Moon and the symbol is Antelope or Deer. The word Mriga represents forests, gardens, a search, a seeking to find, to roam about in the forests and a hunter, to seek, to blaze the trail, a guide and preceptor. An erotic affair, beauty of the countenance with particular emphasis on the radiant luster of the face, because of Moon. To

Karma 5 seek as the primary characteristic of the star, to discover hidden treasures after the churning of the Sea, the Samudra Manthan of the Hindu Mythology, the mother, motherly conduct that is to say maternal instincts, self-sacrifice without hope of requital etc. Moon is the lord of the mind, so all mental attitude, good or bad, sympathies and antipathies, patience and impatience, the fidgetiness and placidity, imagination, the gift of poetry, purity, sweetness and light, physical and mental aspects, all these come within this star and when things of sweetness and light of physic as also of the mind, both derivatives from Moon. Moon is a sub-Graha around the earth and that is why the influence of Moon on all that happens in the earth is so paramount. And again that is why the influence of Moon on both the body and mind is simultaneously so very great. Sukra and Moon both are female grahas (planets) with difference that while Moon is the Lord of motherhood, maternal instincts and all that, Sukra is the lord of feminine beauty, the structure of feminine form, the physical excellence of women and all that. In the former there is elegance and dignity of the feminine while in the latter, the physical beauty and the lure of feminine form which leads a male captive dominates. Moon is the lord of marine products and of medicines; that it was from the sea that Moon raised. And it is to Moon that the influences and causalities have to be traced. Those born in the Mrigashira star are truthful, handsome; enjoy wealth and prosperity, pure in heart, bright, sage-like and fickle minded. They are interested in learning, obedient, always loving teachers, friendly with the king and respected by kings. They are enthusiastic, feared, monied, lovable, and knowledgeable in architecture, kingly and good at administration. They are pleasant spoken, intelligent and affectionate to their mother. They are quick and arrogant and they hate others. Those born in the first pada are well built, moneyed, killers of father, serve the king, are afraid of family and always thinking about the next world. Ardra Nakshatra In Mithunam, from 6:40 to 20: The presiding deity is the Rudra, the wielder of the trident and the symbol is a tear-drop. The lord ofArdra is Mercury, when Surya entersArdra the earth is said to be starting its menstrual course. Ardra means wet or surcharged with water, which is fat. Because the earth is running her menstrual course there are tear drops falling one after another. From Rudra comes all suffering, persecutions and oppressions, anger, ferocity of countenance or hideousness of noise. Rudra is another name of Shiva, the Five Faced (Panchanana). In knowledge, asceticism, renunciation, as also in enjoyment, he is the supreme consummation of all desires. He is a blue- throated one, the wielder of the most tremendous powers, what could not be attempted far less achieved by other Gods, when the churned Ocean at the time of Samudra Manthan exhaled poison Siva achieved quite simply by holding the exhalation in his throat. On one side he is the symbol of the most perfect placidity and serenity, on the other hand he is the symbol of all that is terrible. He holds the great serpent on his head and on his forehead crescent Moon with his sweet-soft light. He is at the same time the most peaceful and also the most terrible. And in all these are to be traced the intrinsic characteristics of Ardra. Superficially, on the surface of it, Ardra stands for suffering, hardness, cruelty, murder, prison, theft, adultery etc. The root characteristic is oppression-in order to purify. All male kidney trouble and connected urethral disease comes within the jurisdiction of Ardra; so also uterine diseases of the female. Those born in the Ardra star are soft, stable minded, strong, earning by sacrifice, afflicted by sickness, fear and angry. They suffer due to hunger, hard bodied, lovable, forget the help rendered by others, experts in trade and commerce, cruel, having many relatives, ill advisers and hate all. Those born in Ardra are with pride, of lower levels and do jobs which are forbidden. They are bereft of money and corns. Such people are poets, little-learned, long lived, and little interested in things. Those born in the first pada are very kind hearted and pleasant faced, experts, with good qualities, warriors, learned, famous, worshipers of gods, and help others. Punarvasu Nakshatra Spread from 20: degree Mithuna up to 3:20 of Kataka. Presiding deity is Aditi, the Lords are Mercury and Moon and the symbol is Quiver (receptacle for arrows). The word Punarvasu is derived from Punar+ Vasu, which means return, renewal, restoration or repetition. The 12 Adityas were born of Kasyapa in the womb of Aditi. The 12 Vasus are Indra, Vishnu, Vaga, Twasta, Varun, Aryama, Pusha, Mitra, Agni, Parjyanya, Vivaswan and Dinakara. The mother Aditi of whom the Gods are born is the repository of everything good-truth, generosity, magnanimity, purity, aristocracy, beauty and renown. It follows that this star is the cause for these virtues. To start afresh after having once broken off, to start a new life, to come back from a distant land-all these are signified by Punarvasu. It stands for freedom from restriction and limitation, and boundless space. Those born in the star Punarvasu are endowed with children, good qualities, wealthy and they indulge in bringing difference of opinion among friends. They speak very clearly and are secretive in their dealings. They are learned in the sciences and interested in personal decoration with gems and gold ornaments. They are givers and famous. They are religious, attractive, carry out works of other women. They are tolerant, satisfied with small things and fast movers. They collect a good circle of friends; daily eat good food, scarifier and worship lord Vishnu. They are peaceful, happy, enjoying and endowed with good progeny. Those born in the Punarvasu star are noted to be long lived, loved by wife, handsome, interested in pomp, of good heart, high in conduct, with low voice, like cereals, intelligent, thinkers, and some possess fish sign on stomach. Those born in the first pada of Punaravasu star are stingy, serve, old people, with sensual looks, affected by sickness, unstable, intelligent, cruel, daring and capable, handsome and hate people. Pushya Nakshatra Spread from 3:20 to 16:40 of Kataka. The Lord of this star is Moon and the symbol is teat of the Cow, the word etymologically means to nourish and that again means to preserve, to protect, replenish, multiply and strengthen. Everything of the very best comes within the scope of this Star. Enjoyment of wealth and prosperity follows from it. Guru is described as the great teacher of all creation from amoebae to the Gods and is the source of all knowledge and wisdom. The mystery of creation
  • 8. Karma 6 is no mystery to him. He is the eloquent preceptor, the wise minister, pontific and the head of all religious ceremonies. He takes pleasure in all worshipful ritual. And that is why the Pushya is composed of these virtues. It has been described as blossoming and flourishing. It is the mouth of Orion. Those born in the star Pushya are wealthy, happy, respected, stable minded, endowed with good looks and are loved by women. Those born in the star Pushya are wealthy, happy, respected, stable minded, endowed with handsome body; respecting parents, following their religion, and most obedient. They command money and vehicles of novelty. They are important persons in the world, knowledgeable in the science of spells and respected by kings. They retain their stand, and are happy. Some of them are characterized by the presence of fish symbol on the hands and feet. They are endowed with all good qualities, short tampered, and interested in the discussion on scriptures. Those born in the first pada of Pushya are cruel, daring, famous, devoted to work and endowed with children. They go to other countries and become wealthy. They are respected by their relatives. Ashlesha Nakshatra Spread from 16:40’ to 30: degree of Kataka, the Moon is the lord of this star. It is the birth star of Kethu and the symbol of this star is coiled up snake. It is the nature of a snake to hide himself, to encircle and entwine, to creep on the chest, to embrace, and to enjoy or unite surreptitiously. All these are the attributes of Ashlesha also. The cunningness of the serpent, its devious nature, the burning sensation of poison and pain along with all consequences that poison connotes are to be read in the constitution of Ashlesha. The virtues and vices of the serpent are all in it. Moon in Aslesha sick lied over with various faults in great intensity. Whoever would have his or her karmathipathi (Lord of the 10th house) or bhagyathipathi (Lord of the 9th house) in this star would run the risk of having all his or her principal acts in life handicapped, jeopardized or spoiled by many kinds of danger and obstruction. If the Lagna is in this star, the native would possibly be of wildly disposition. Such people would like to work in secret and their words would carry the sting of poison. Those born in the star Aslesha are cruel, daring and angry; according to Narasimha Prayoga Parijata of Atharva Veda, some of these people are probably co-habit with people of same sex and animals like cow. They travel aimlessly, do undesirable jobs, harmful to his own and other people; they are proud and suffer on account of sex starvation. They are angry and are strong like lion; they know Brahman and dependent on others for life. They are cruel to all beings, pay fines by doing sinful acts, unstable minded, and fearful. They are always sad, serve others, short tempered, and vary bad persons. They are childish, slow in the work of their lord; wide eyed, some of them endowed with fish sign in eyes, develop enmity with his own people, highly stingy and stubborn. Those born in the first pada are learned and dignified. They are knowledgeable and follow the instructions of the religious discussions. They are intelligent and good speakers. They are independent and know other’s jobs and respected by kings. In the next issue I will meet you all with another set of nine stars. Karma 8 Chettinad Kalan Kudamilagai Baby corn pirattal (Baby corn mushroom capsicum masala) Ingredients Baby corn-6 Capsicum-1(medium sized) Mushroom-20 Big onion-1 Tomato-1 (The following vegetables can also be added) Carrot-1 Potato-1 Peas-a handful To grind Coconut-3 table spoons Pottukadalai-1 table spoon Red chillies-6 Kasakasa-1 teaspoon Fennel seeds-1 teaspoon Clove-1 Cardamom-1 Cinnamon-a small piece Procedure Grind the items given in ‘To grind’ to a smooth paste. Cut the vegetables available from the above into small pieces. Mince the onion and tomatoes. Keep the kadai in the stove. In two tablespoons of oil season the curry with a small piece of cinnamon, clove, fennel seeds and curry leaves. Add the chopped onions. Once the onions turn transparent add the minced tomatoes. When the tomatoes get smashed, first add potatoes, carrots, peas and corn pieces and cook in low fire adding little water for 8 to 10 minutes.(You can also pressure cook the vegetables for a whistle). Once you feel all the above vegetables are cooked add the mushroom and capsicum pieces. You will find water coming out from capsicum. This water will be enough for the capsicum to get cooked. Add the required quantity of salt. It will roughly take 5 minutes for the mushrooms and capsicum to get cooked. Now mix the grinded masala in quarter cup of water and add to the curry. Check for the taste. If salt is needed add a little. Keep on stirring till the curry turns thick (In the form of a masala curry). Garnish with coriander leaves Kathirikkai Malli Pachadi (Brinjal Cilantro Curry). Ingredients Brinjal-4 medium sized Big onion-1 or small onions (10) Tomato-1 Coriander leaves-a small bunch (1 cup cut Coriander leaves) Sambar powder-1 teaspoon Green chillies-2 Tamarind paste-1/2 teaspoon (1/4 qty used for sambar) Thoor dhal-1 handful (to be cooked one whistle shorter than for sambar) To season Small jeera-1 teaspoon Broken urudh dhal-1 teaspoon Curry leaf-little Procedure Keep the kadai in the stove. In one teaspoon of ghee or cooking oil season the curry with the items given in ‘to season’. Add the chopped onions, tomatoes, green chili and cut brinjal pieces one by one and saute nicely for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the water to the cooked dhal (1 cup) and the sambar powder. Cook for 3 more minutes. The brinjals will be almost cooked now. Now, add the Aachi’s corner
  • 11. Karma 9 tamarind juice, salt needed and the cooked dhal. Allow it to cook for 2 more minutes. Now add the chopped coriander leaves. Wait for one boil and switch off the stove. The curry should be semi solid with the brinjals rightly cooked. Over cooking will make the brinjal pieces smashed. Chettinad Pavakkai masala (Bitter gourd or karela curry) Ingredients Pavakkai-2(medium sized) Small onion-30 or big onion 2 Tomatoes-2 Garlic-10 Sambar powder-2 teaspoons Tamarind juice-1/2 teaspoon Coriander leaves-little Jaggery Powder- 2 teaspoons Mince the onions and tomatoes in a chopper or cut the onions and garlic into very small pieces. Rotate the tomatoes once in a mixie to crush them. Cut the pavakkai also into small pieces. Procedure Keep the kadai in the stove. In two table spoons of oil season the curry with 1 teaspoon of mustard, 1 spoon small jeera and curry leaves. After the mustard seeds splitter, add the minced onions, garlic and sauté till they turn transparent. Now add the pavakkai pieces and keep the stove in medium flame and cook the pieces without adding water. When you feel that the pieces are almost cooked add the crushed tomatoes sambar powder and the required salt and the tamarind juice. Let this cook for 5 more minutes. Now add 2 teaspoons of jaggery powder and keep the stove in sim. You will notice oil separating. Now switch off the stove. Garnish with coriander leaves. Mushroom Fry. Ingredients Fresh mushrooms-100gms (cut into 4 pieces) Big onion-1 Tomato-1 Ginger garlic paste-1 teaspoon Sambar powder-2 teaspoon Turmeric powder-1/2 teaspoon Coriander leaves –little Mint leaves-little For seasoning Cinnamon-2 small pieces Brinji leaf-a small one Clove-2 Cardamom-2 Fennel seeds-1 teaspoon Green chillies-2 spitted Mint leaves-little Mushrooms should not be washed for a long time in water as it will absorb water. First wipe it with a soft dry towel or a tissue paper and then with a wet one. Cut into pieces. Cut the onions and tomatoes also. Split the chilies. Keep the kadai in the stove. Season it with the items given in ‘to season’ in 1 table spoon of oil. Saute the onions, tomatoes and the chillies. Add ginger garlic paste and stir nicely. Once the raw smell of ginger garlic paste goes add the mushroom pieces, sambar powder and turmeric powder. Saute for 3 to 4 minutes. You will find water oozing out of mushrooms. Now add very little water (3 to 4 tablespoons) and the salt required. Close the kadai with a lid. Keep the stove in medium fire. The mushrooms will get cooked within 5 minutes. So after 5 minutes open the lid and see. If there is excess water increase the flame and cook till there is not much water content. Now the fry is ready. Garnish with coriander leaves while serving.

Karma11 Chow Chow Koottucurry (Chayote Squash Koottu Curry) Ingredients Chow Chow-1 medium size Green chilli-1 Big onion-1/2(finely chopped) Sambar powder-1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder-1/2 teaspoon Coconut milk-1 tablespoon To season Ghee-1 teaspoon Cumin seeds-1 teaspoon Broken urudh dhal-1 teaspoon Curry leaf-little Procedure Cut the vegetable into small pieces. Cook the dhal in a kadai in 2 cups of water. When the dhal is almost cooked add the vegetable along with 1 ½ cups of water.Add the green chili, turmeric, onions and the chili powder. Half close the kadai and cook in medium fire for 10 minutes. When the vegetable is almost cooked add the salt needed and allow it to cook for 5 more minutes.Always see to it that the curry does not get thick. If found so add little water and bring to a boil. Switch off the stove. In the seasoning pan season the koottucurry with the items given in’ To season’ in little bit of ghee. This ghee will give a wonderful taste to the dish. If going to be used immediately, coconut milk can be added. It will enrich the taste. If you intend to give to young kids, coconut milk can be avoided. Vazhai Thandu Koottu (Banana stem curry) Ingredients Broken green gram (pasiparuppu)-1 handful (1/4 cup) Green chili-4 Chopped small onion-10 Curry leaf-little Small jeera-1 teaspoon Coconut milk-2 tablespoon Cutting the Thandu (banana stem) Remove the thick outer portion of the stem and get smooth stem. Make thin round slices, while making each slice slightly rotate your finger from the centre of the slice. If your finger gets hold of a fiber, the rest of the fiber will get wound to your finger (2 seconds for each slice).Put these in a vessel of water mixed with a spoon of curd or butter milk (butter milk will help the thandu to retain its white color). Once all the slices are made, chop them into small pieces, keeping together 5 or 6 slices together. If you hold a small stick like thing inside the vessel having the cut pieces and rotate slowly, the remaining fiber will get wound in that stick. Procedure Cook the dhal in a big kadai. Once the dhal is well cooked, add the cut vazhai thandu pieces, chili and onion. Add a cup of water. Close the kadai and cook for 10 minutes in slow fire. Open the lid and add little salt (remember that this thandu can’t hold too much salt). Bring to a boil and switch off the stove. Add the coconut milk. Season the koottu with little small jeera and curry leaf in a teaspoon of ghee in a separate kadai and add to the koottu. If you want to store the koottu for the next day, coconut milk can be avoided.
  • 14. Karma 12 Karate is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Islands in what is now Okinawa, Japan. It was developed from indigenous fighting methods called te and Chinese kenpo. Karate is a striking art using punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes, and open-handed techniques such as knife-hands (karate chop). Grappling, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point strikes are taught in some styles. A karate practitioner is called a karateka. Karate developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom prior to its 19th century annexation by Japan. It was brought to the Japanese mainland in the early 20th century during a time of cultural exchanges between the Japanese and the Ryukyuans. In 1922 the Japanese Ministry of Education invited Gichin Funakoshi to Tokyo to give a karate demonstration. In 1924 Keio University established the first university karate club in Japan and by 1932; major Japanese universities had karate clubs. In this era of escalating Japanese militarism, the name was changed from “Chinese hand” to “empty hand” both of which are pronounced karate – to indicate that the Japanese wished to develop the combat form in Japanese style. After the Second World War, Okinawa became an important United States military site and karate became popular among servicemen stationed there. The martial arts movies of the 1960s and 1970s served to greatly increase its popularity and the word karate began to be used in a generic way to refer to all striking-based Oriental martial arts. Karate schools began appearing across the world, catering to those with casual interest as well as those seeking a deeper study of the art. Shigeru Egami, Chief Instructor of Shotokan Dojo, opined “that the majority of followers of karate in overseas countries pursue karate only for its fighting techniques...Movies and television...depict karate as a mysterious way of fighting capable of causing death or injury with a single blow...the mass media present a pseudo art far from the real thing.” Shoshin Nagamine said “Karate may be considered as the conflict within oneself or as a life-long marathon which can be won only through self-discipline, hard training and one’s own creative efforts.” For many practitioners, karate is a deeply philosophical practice. Karate-do teaches ethical principles and can have spiritual significance to its adherents. Gichin Funakoshi, “Father of Modern Karate” titled his autobiography Karate- Do: My Way of Life in recognition of the transforming nature of karate study. Today karate is practiced for self-perfection, for cultural reasons, for self-defense and as a sport. In 2005, in the 117th IOC International Olympic Committee voting, karate did not receive the necessary two thirds majority vote to become an Olympic sport. Web Japan, sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims there are 23 million karate practitioners worldwide. The most popular styles of Karate are Okinawa, and Anko Itasu. Okinawa Karate began as a common fighting system known as te (Okinawan: ti) among the Pechin class of the Ryukyuans. After trade relationships were established with the Ming dynasty of China by King Satto of Chuzan in 1372, some forms of Chinese martial arts were introduced to the Ryukyu Islands by the visitors from China, particularly Fujian Province. A large group of Chinese families moved to Okinawa around 1392 for the purpose of cultural exchange, where they established the community of Kumemura and shared their knowledge of a wide variety of Chinese arts and sciences, including the Chinese martial arts. The political centralization of Okinawa by King Sho Hashi in 1429 and the ‘Policy of Banning Weapons,’ enforced in Okinawa after the invasion of the Shimazu clan in 1609, are also factors that furthered the development of unarmed combat techniques in Okinawa. There were few formal styles of te, but rather many practitioners with their own methods. One surviving example is the Motobu-ryu school passed down from the Motobu family by Seikichi Uehara. Early styles of karate are often generalized as Shuri-te, Naha-te, and Tomari-te, named after the three cities from which they emerged. Each area and its Sports Page.
  • 15. Karma 13 teachers had particular kata, techniques, and principles that distinguished their local version of te from the others. Members of the Okinawan upper classes were sent to China regularly to study various political and practical disciplines. The incorporation of empty-handed Chinese wu shu into Okinawan martial arts occurred partly because of these exchanges. Traditional karate kata bear a strong resemblance to the forms found in Fujian martial arts such as Fujian White Crane, Five Ancestors, and Gangrou-quan. Further influence came from Southeast Asia— particularly Sumatra, Java, and Melaka. Many Okinawan weapons such as the sai, tonfa, and nunchaku may have originated in and around Southeast Asia. Sakukawa Kanga (1782–1838) had studied pugilism and staff fighting in China, according to one legend, under the guidance of Kosokun, originator of kusanku kata. In 1806 he started teaching a fighting art in the city of Shuri that he called “Tudi Sakukawa,” which meant “Sakukawa of China Hand.” This was the first known recorded reference to the art of “Tudi”. Around the 1820s Sakukawa’s most significant student Matsumura Sokon (1809–1899) taught a synthesis of te (Shuri-te and Tomari-te) and Shaolin styles. Matsumura’s style would later become the Shorin-ryu style. Anko Itosu Grandfather of Modern Karate Matsumura taught his art to Itosu Anko (1831–1915) among others. Itosu adapted two forms he had learned from Matsumara. These are kusanku and chiang nan. He created the ping’an forms (“heian” or “pinan” in Japanese) which are simplified kata for beginning students. In 1901 Itosu helped to get karate introduced into Okinawa’s public schools. These forms were taught to children at the elementary school level. Itosu’s influence in karate is broad. The forms he created are common across nearly all styles of karate. His students became some of the most well known karate masters, including Gichin Funakoshi, Kenwa Mabuni, and Motobu Choki. Itosu is sometimes referred to as “the Grandfather of Modern Karate.” In 1881 Higaonna Kanryo returned from China after years of instruction with Ryu Ryu Ko and founded what would become Naha-te. One of his students was the founder of Goju- ryu, Chojun Miyagi. Chojun Miyagi taught such well-known karateka as Seko Higa, Meitoku Yagi, Miyazato Eichi, and Seikichi Toguchi, and for a very brief time near the end of his life, An’ichi Miyagi.In addition to the three early te styles of karate a fourth Okinawan influence is that of Kanbun Uechi (1877–1948). At the age of 20 he went to Fuzhou in Fujian Province, China, to escape Japanese military conscription. While there he studied under Shushiwa. He was a leading figure of Chinese Nanpa Shorin-ken at that time. He later developed his own style of Uechi-ryu karate based on the Sanchin, Seisan, and Sanseiryu kata that he had studied in China. Masters of karate in Tokyo Kanken Toyama, Hironori Ohtsuka, Takeshi Shimoda, Gichin Funakoshi, Motobu Choki, Kenwa Mabuni, Genwa Nakasone, and Shinken Taira. Gichin Funakoshi, founder of Shotokan karate, is generally credited with having introduced and popularized karate on the main islands of Japan. Actually many Okinawans were actively teaching, and are thus equally responsible for the development of karate. Funakoshi was a student of both Asato Anko and Itosu Anko (who had worked to introduce karate to the Okinawa Prefectural School System in 1902). During this time period, prominent teachers who also influenced the spread of karate in Japan included Kenwa Mabuni, Chojun Miyagi, Motobu Choki, Kanken Toyama, and Kanbun Uechi. This was a turbulent period in the history of the region. It includes Japan’s annexation of the Okinawan island group in 1872, the First Sino-Japanese War (1894– 1895), the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), the annexation of Korea, and the rise of Japanese militarism (1905–1945). Japan was invading China at the time, and Funakoshi knew that the art of Tang/China hand would not be accepted; thus the change of the art’s name to “way of the empty hand.” The do suffix implies that karatedo is a path to self knowledge, not just a study of the technical aspects of fighting. Like most martial arts practiced in Japan, karate made its transition from jutsu to do around the beginning of the 20th century. The “do” in “karate-do” sets it apart from karate-jutsu, as aikido is distinguished from aikijutsu, judo from jujutsu, kendo from kenjutsu and iaido from iaijutsu. Gichin Funakoshi Founder of Shotokan Karate Funakoshi changed the names of many kata and the name of the art itself, doing so to get karate accepted by the Japanese budo organization Dai Nippon Butoku Kai. Funakoshi also gave Japanese names to many of the kata. The five pinan forms became known as heian, the three naihanchi forms became known as tekki seisan as hangetsu, Chinto as gankaku, wanshu as
  • 16. Karma 14 empi, and so on. These were mostly political changes, rather than changes to the content of the forms, although Funakoshi did introduce some such changes. Funakoshi had trained in two of the popular branches of Okinawan karate of the time, Shorin-ryu and Shorei-ryu. In Japan he was influenced by kendo, incorporating some ideas about distancing and timing into his style. He always referred to what he taught as simply karate, but in 1936 he built a dojo in Tokyo and the style he left behind is usually called Shotokan after this dojo. The modernization and systemization of karate in Japan also included the adoption of the white uniform that consisted of the kimono and the dogi or keikogi—mostly called just karategi and colored belt ranks. Both of these innovations were originated and popularized by Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo and one of the men Funakoshi consulted in his efforts to modernize karate. In 1922, Hironori Ohtsuka attended the Tokyo Sports Festival, where he saw Funakoshi’s karate. Ohtsuka was so impressed with this that he visited Funakoshi many times during his stay. Funakoshi was, in turn, impressed by Ohtsuka’s enthusiasm and determination to understand karate, and agreed to teach him. In the following years, Ohtsuka set up a medical practice dealing with martial arts injuries. His prowess in martial arts led him to become the Chief Instructor of Shindo Yoshin-ryu jujutsu at the age of 30, and an assistant instructor in Funakoshi’s dojo. By 1929, Ohtsuka was registered as a member of the Japan Martial Arts Federation. Okinawan karate at this time was only concerned with kata. Ohtsuka thought that the full spirit of budo, which concentrates on defense and attack, was missing, and that kata techniques did not work in realistic fighting situations. He experimented with other, more combative styles such as judo, kendo, and aikido. He blended the practical and useful elements of Okinawan karate with traditional Japanese martial arts techniques from jujitsu and kendo, which led to the birth of kumite, or free fighting, in karate. Ohtsuka thought that there was a need for this more dynamic type of karate to be taught, and he decided to leave Funakoshi to concentrate on developing his own style of karate: Wado-ryu. In 1934, Wado-ryu karate was officially recognized as an independent style of karate. This recognition meant a departure for Ohtsuka from his medical practice and the fulfillment of a life’s ambition to become a full-time martial artist. Ohtsuka’s personalized style of Karate was officially registered in 1938 after he was awarded the rank of Renshi-go. He presented a demonstration of Wado- ryu karate for the Japan Martial Arts Federation. They were so impressed with his style and commitment that they acknowledged him as a high-ranking instructor. The next year the Japan Martial Arts Federation asked all the different styles to register their names; Ohtsuka registered the name Wado- ryu. In 1944, Ohtsuka was appointed Japan’s Chief Karate Instructor. A new form of karate called Kyokushin was formally founded in 1957 by Masutatsu Oyama (who was born a Korean, Choi Yeong-Eui). Kyokushin is largely a synthesis of Shotokan and Goju-ryu. It teaches a curriculum that emphasizes aliveness, physical toughness, and full contact sparring. Because of its emphasis on physical, full-force sparring, Kyokushin is now often called “full contact karate”, or “Knockdown karate”. Many other karate organizations and styles are descended from the Kyokushin curriculum. TheWorldKarateFederationrecognizes the following styles of karate in its kata list: Shotokan-ryu, Shito-ryu, Goju-ryu, and Wado-ryu. The World Union of Karate-do Organizations (WUKO) recognizes the following styles of karate in its kata list. Goju-ryu, Shito-ryu, Shotokan-ryu, Wado-ryu, Shorin-ryu, Uechi-ryu, Kyokushinkai, and Budokan. In the next issue we will discuss about some other interesting sport.

Karma 15 During the past issues, by the gracious blessings of theAlmighty and Swamiji, we discussed about the Spirituality described in Vedas, other great epics and sayings of great sages and monks. In this issue we will discuss the spirituality explained in the great Upanishad named Mundaka Upanishad. Man is endowed with the special instrument of discrimination, of judgment, of analysis and synthesis, which among all animals, he alone possesses. He has to develop this and utilize it to the best purpose. Through this instrument, he can realize the Immanent Divinity. Instead, man pesters himself and others with the question: Where does God reside? If He is real, why is He not seen? Hearing such queries, one feels like pitying the poor questioners. For, they are announcing their own foolishness. They are like the dullards who aspire for university degrees without taking pains even to learn the alphabet. They aspire to realize God without putting themselves to the trouble of practicing the Sadhana required. People who have no moral strength and purity talk of God and His existence and decry efforts to see Him. Such people have no right to be heard. Spiritual Sadhana is based on the holy Sastras. They cannot be mastered in a trice. They cannot be followed through talk. Their message is summed up in the Upanishads; hence, they are revered as authoritative. They are not the products of human intelligence; they are the whisperings of God to man. They are parts of the eternal Vedas. The Vedas shine gloriously through all their parts. The Upanishads are authentic and authoritative, as they share the glory of the Vedas. They are 1180 in number, but, through the centuries, many of them disappeared from human memory and only 108 have now survived. Of these, 13 have attained great popularity, as a result of the depth and value of their contents. The sage Vyasa classified the Upanishads and allotted them among the four Vedas; The Rig-Veda has 21 branches and each branch has one Upanishad allotted to it. The Yajur Veda has 109 branches and 109 Upanishads. The Atharva Veda has 50 branches and 50 Upanishads were its share. The Sama Veda has a thousand branches and the balance, namely, 1000 Upanishads were its share. Thus, the 1180 Upanishads were assigned by Vyasa to the Four Vedas. Sankaracharya raised the status of ten among the Upanishads by selecting them for writing his commentaries and so they became especially important. Humanity stands to gain or fall by these ten. All who are seeking human welfare and progress through spirituality are now apprehending whether even these ten will be forgotten, for, neglecting them will usher in moral and spiritual disaster. There is no reason, however, for such fears. The Vedas can never be harmed. Pundits and those with faith should resolve
  • 18. Karma 16 to present before humanity these ten Upanishads at least. They are Isa, Kena, Katha, Prasna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Thaithiriya, Aithareya, Chandogya and Brihadaranyaka. In this issue we well discuss the spirituality explained in Mundaka Upanishad. The Upanishads have also inspired other works on Geography, Astronomy, Astrology, Economics and Political Theory. The Vedas and the Upanishads are the very foundation for Sanathana Dharma and spirituality. There is one interesting feature to be noted. The Hindu religion has no one Founder as the others have. That invisible unknown founder is God, the source of all wisdom. He is the Prophet of this Sanathana Dharma. He is the Founder; His Grace and His Inspiration manifested through the pure Sages and they became the spokesmen of this Dharma. When the moral purity of men degenerates, God takes form as grace and inspiration in sages and teachers. He has also given through the Upanishads the Sathya-Jnana, the Wisdom concerning the Reality. This Mundaka Upanishad begins with an Invocation, praying that eye may see auspicious things, the ear may hear auspicious sounds, and that life may be spent in the contemplation of the Lord. The teaching of this Upanishad is referred to as Brahmavidya, either because it describes first the message of Hiranyagarbha, the Brahma, or because the message relates the glory of Brahmam. This Upanishad speaks of Brahmavidya as the mystery which only those with shaven heads and those who go through a rite of having Fire on the shaven head can understand. So, it is called Mundaka, or shaven Head. Apart from this, this Upanishad is honored as the crest of all, since it expounds the very essence of Brahma Jnana. It is assigned to the Fourth Veda, the Atharva Veda. This knowledge has been handed down from teacher to pupil by word of mouth, enriched and confirmed by experience; it is also called Paravidya, the knowledge of the Other when it deals with the attribute less Principle; when it deals with the attribute-full, the Saguna, the materialized principle, it is called A-paravidya, the knowledge of the Immanent, not the Transcendent aspect. These are the two that are found in this Upanishad. They were taught by Sage Saunaka to Sage Angirasa; that is what the text announces. The Vedas and the Vedangas deal with Aparavidya. The Upanishads deal specially with Para-vidya. But, the interesting thing is: the Apara-vidya leads on to the Para, the knowledge of Brahmam, which is the goal. The spider evolves out of itself the magnificent manifestation of the web; so too, this moving, changing world is manifested from the causative Brahmam. The changing world is the product of creator-creation complex. It is true and factual and useful, so long as one is unaware of the Reality. The utmost that one can gain by activity, that is to say, holy or sacred activity is Heaven or Swarga, which has a longer lease of life, but, which has an end in spite of it. So, the seeker loses all yearning for Heaven; he/she approaches an elderly teacher full of compassion, who instructs him/her in the discipline for realizing the Brahmam. All beings are Brahmam and no other. They all do emanate from Brahmam. As sparks emanate from fire, as hair grows on the skin but is different from it, so too beings originate from Brahmam. Brahmam causes the sun, moon, stars and planets to revolve in space; Brahmam grants the consequence of all the acts of beings. The Individual and the Universal are two birds sitting on the same tree i.e., the human body. The Jivi (individual) acts, and suffers the consequences of those acts. The Iswara (universal) sits quiet, as a witness of the other bird. When the Jivi looks at the Iswara and realizes that it is nothing but an image, it escapes from grief and pain. When the mind is drawn by yearning to know the Iswara, all other low desires diminishes and disappears. Then, knowledge of Atma is attained. The last mantra of this Upanishad declares that its aim is to make man attain that Jnana. Munda means head; this Upanishad is the Head of all Upanishads, we can say. It has three sections, with two chapters in each. In the first section, theAparavidya, and in the second, the Paravidya and the means of mastering them are dealt with. In the third, the nature of the Reality and of the release from bondage is defined. The Karma that helps attain the Brahmam is denoted in the mantras. That is why this Upanishad is respected as very sacred. The spider, as already indicated, spins out the web from itself without any extraneous agency; it also takes in the web it has spun. So too, Creation was effected without an agent and the Universe emanated. Heaven is the highest attainable stage through Karma. Of such Karmas or rites, the worship of Fire called Agnihotra is the chief. The performance of such rites contributes to the cleansing of the mind. Such cleansing is a necessary preliminary to Paravidya. The flames that rise high from the sacrificial altar of fire appear to the performer as if they are hailing him on to realize the Reality or Brahmam. He who does the rite with full awareness of the significance of the mantra is able to reach the Solar Splendor, through the offerings made; they take him to the region of Indra, the Lord of the Gods. Only on this basis, Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar does a lot of fire worship and he recommends fire worship named “Mahayajna” to his devotees, who need more and more powers.
  • 20. Karma 18 The Upanishad recommends two types of obligatory Karmas: Ishta and Poortha. The rite of Agnihotra, adherence to Truth, Thapas or Asceticism, Veda-adhyayanam or study of the Vedas, the service offered to guests in one’s home - these are Ishta; construction of temples, caravan-series, rest-houses, tanks, planting of avenue trees - such acts are Poortha. These give consequences that are beneficial but, all such cause-effect chains are transient, they are fundamentally defective. The entire Creation is bound up with name and form and so unreal. It can be described in words and so, limited and circumscribed by the intellect and the mind. The Paramapurusha, the Supreme Person alone is eternal, real, and pure. He is the prompter of activity and the dispenser of consequence. But, He is beyond the eye, beyond the intellect. Like the spokes of a wheel that radiate from the hub, that lead from all directions to the centre, all creation radiates from Him. To reach the central hub and know that all spokes radiate from it, the mind is the instrument. Brahmam the target is to be reached by the arrow-mind. Have your mind fixed on the target and using the Upanishadic teaching as the bow, shoot straight and hard, to hit the Brahmam and master. That is to say, the Pranava or the OM is the arrow; Brahmam is the target. As aforesaid the mind and thoughts are the base for an individual’s development. That’s why Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar often says as “you will live according to your thoughts”. The Brahmam illumines the Jivi by getting reflected in the inner consciousness or Anthah-karana. One has only to turn that consciousness away from the objective world, contact with which contaminates the mind. Now, train the inner consciousness to meditate on the OM, with single-pointed attention. Meditate on the Atma as unaffected by the Jivi, though in him and with him and activating him. Meditate on Him in the heart, from which radiate countless nadis, subtle nerves, in all directions. If this process is followed, one can attain Jnana or Wisdom. The Universe is an instrument to reveal the majesty of God. The inner firmament in the heart of man is also equally a revelation of His Glory. He is the Breath of one’s breath. Since He has no specific form, He cannot be indicated by words. Nor can His mystery be penetrated by the other senses. He is beyond the reach of asceticism, beyond the bounds of Vedic rituals. He can be known only by an intellect that has been cleansed of all trace of attachment and hatred, of egoism and the sense of possession. Jnana alone can grant self-realization. Dhyana can confer concentration of the faculties; through that concentration, Jnana can be won, even while in the body. The Brahmam activates the body through the five vital airs or Pranas. It condescends to reveal itself in that same body as soon as the inner consciousness attains the requisite purity. For the Atma is immanent in the senses, inner and outer, as heat in fuel and as butter in milk. Now, the consciousness is like damp fuel, soaked in the foulness of sensory desires and disappointments. When the pool in the heart becomes clear of the slimy overgrowth, the Atma shines in its pristine splendor. He who acquires the knowledge of this Atman is to be revered. For, he is liberated. He has become Brahmam that which he strove to know and be. Man is essentially divine. However, he believes himself to be an individual, limited and temporary, because he is entangled in the characteristics of the Five Elements, namely, Sound, Touch, Form,TasteandSmell.Thiserrorbringsaboutjoyandgrief,good and bad, birth and death. To escape from this association with the Elements, to rid oneself of the pulls of their characteristics, is the sign of Liberation, called in Sanskrit as Kaivalya, Moksha or Mukthi. Names may change; but the achievement is the same. While entangled in the Five Elements, man is attracted, distracted or disappointed by them; all this causes distress. Wealth, possessions - vehicles, buildings - all these re transmutations of the elements. Man craves for them; when he loses them or fails to get them, he spurns them. Let us take the Five Elements, one by one. The living being has the first one, the Earth, as its base. Water, the second, is the basis for the earth. Water is produced from Fire, the third element, Fire itself emanating from Wind, the fourth. Wind or Vayu arises from Ether, or Akasa. Akasa emerges from the Primal Nature and the Primal Nature is but the manifestation of one aspect of the majesty of God, or the Supreme Sovereign Atma, the Paramatma. Seeking to reach that Paramatma, the source and core of the Universe, the Individual or Jivi, who has entangled himself in the elements, has to overcome, by discrimination and steady practice of detachment, the bonds one by one; such a person is a Sadhaka; he who wins in this struggle is the Jivan-muktha, ‘Liberated even while alive.’
  • 22. Karma 20 For the exercise of such discrimination and for the visualization of one’s innate reality, one has to study the Upanishads. They are collectively called Vedanta. They form the Jnana kanda of the Vedas, the section that deals with the Higher Wisdom. Liberation from the consequences of Ignorance can be secured only by Knowledge or Jnana. The Upanishads themselves declare, “Jnaanaad eva thu kaivalyam”: “By Knowledge alone can freedom be won.” The term Upanishad denotes the study and practice of the innate truth: the term, Brahmavidya, denotes the supremacy of spiritual contemplation; the term, Yogasastra denotes the mental churning that brings success. What is the fundamental activity which is required of man? What is the basic thing to be known? It is only one’s basic reality. The Upanishads describe the various stages and the various modes of this search for realizing this. The name is full of significance. ‘Upa’ means the process of studying with ‘Nishta’ or steadfastness; ‘shad’ means the attainment of the Ultimate Reality. The name Upa- ni-shad arose for these reasons. The Upanishads teach not only the principles of Atmavidya; they indicate also the practical means of realization. They point out not only the duties and obligations one has to bear, but also the actions to be done and those to be avoided. So, whether it is the Gita or the Upanishads or any holy and spiritual teachings, the teaching is Non-duality, not Duality, or qualified Monism. The human eye cannot delve into the minute or the magnitudinous. It cannot read the mystery of the virus or the atom or the stellar universe. Therefore, scientists supplement the eye with the telescope and the microscope. Similarly, sages are able to experience Divinity through the eye of knowledge, gained by following the Dharma of moral conduct and spiritual discipline. When the human eye stands in need of an extraneous instrument to observe even the insignificant worm and virus, how can one refuse to go through the process of mantra if he desires to see the omnipresent transcendent Principle? It is very hard to acquire the eye of wisdom. Concentration is essential for this. And, for concentration to develop and stabilize itself, three things are very important: purity of consciousness, moral awareness and spiritual discrimination. These qualifications are difficult of attainment by ordinary folk. We should read at least the basic teachings of the Upanishads and try to practice the spirituality taught in those Holy Scriptures. By practicing the spirituality we all can lead a comfortable life. There is no caste, creed, region and religion for practicing spirituality.   • 23. Karma 21 Sri Soolini Durga is the wife of Sri.Sarabeswara. She is another form of Goddess Parasakthi. There are three shapes for each and every deity. They are Santham, Ugram and Maha ugram. It means calm, fearsome and the most fearsome. SriMeenakshi, Sri Kamakshi are the examples for calm poses of Goddess Parasakthi. Sri.Durga is the example for Ugram and Sri Soolini Durga and Prathyangira Devi are the examples for the most fearsome poses. When we need the motherly affection we have to pray the Santha shapes. To get rid of moderate troubles we have to pray ugra shapes as Sri.Durga. To solve the sever problems we face in our day to day life we have to pray the Maha ugram poses. Atharva Veda is the only Veda, which deals with the healing part. It explains in detail about the different methods of prayers and rituals to get rid of our problems. Narasimha is one of the most fearsome shapes of Lord Mahavishnu. One of his devotees Prahaaladha. He is from the family of demons. He had to face a lot of troubles with his father Hiranyakasibu. Prahaladha prayed Lord Mahavishnu to rescue him. Hiranyakasibu had got a boon from Brahma.Hiranyakasibu cannot be killed with any kind of weapon He can’t be killed by any kind of divine, human, animal or birds. He can’t be killed either inside or outside of the place where he lives. With the power of the boon he started giving troubles to all the human beings and divine powers. He troubled the sages and monks also. All prayed Lord Mahavishnu to rescue them from this demon. The demon forced all to chant Om Hiranyaya Namaha. Everybody did so. But his own son refused to do so. He chanted the name of Lord Mahavishnu. Oneday, Hiranyakasibu asked, “dear son, will your god Mahavishnu come inside this pillar and save you and kicked a huge pillar at the main hall of his palace. Lord Mahavishnu took the most fearsome pose Narasimha and came out of the pillar, caught the demon took him to the entrance and killed him. Narasimma’s anger was very severe. Nobody could control his anger. So. All prayed Lord Shiva to control the anger of Narasimma. Lord Shiva also took a fearsome pose called Sarabeswara. He had two feathers. He controlled the anger of Narasimma and made him cool. Lord Sarabeswara had two wings. One wing is Sri PrathyangiraDevi and another wing is Sri.Soolini Durga. Prathyangira Devi and Soolini Durga are the most fearsome poses of Goddess Parasakthi. Prathyangira Devi is called as Atharvana Badrakali and Sri. Soolini Durga is called as Atharvan Rudrakali.She is the mother of all. She lives in the mountain called Kailash. As she lives in a hill she is also called as Giri Durga. She always sits on a lion. She is having eight hands with different kinds of weapons. Each and every weapon has its individual significance. Her first right hand is adorned with a Trishul the second is adorned with a knife, the third one is adorned with a wheel called as “Chakra” and the fourth right hand is adorned with an arrow. The shape of the arrow itself is very different. Normally the arrows will only have a sharp head. But the arrow that adorns the hand of Sri. Soolini Durga has a half circle head. The first right hand is adorned with a rope, the second with a different weapon
  • 24. Karma 22 called as “Gadha”, the third with a bow to shoot the arrow and the fourth left hand is adorned with a conch. Why she is having the wheel, conch and gadha on her hands? Normally these are the weapons of Lord Mahavishnu. Parasakthi is the sister of Lord Mahavishnu. He permitted his younger sister to use his weapons and bless her devotees. What do we get from Sri.Soolini Durga? She is the rescuer from enemies. She secures all the wealth and assets. She helps us to come across all enemies. She cures the mind and physic. She blesses us with good children. She gives a lot of knowledge and wisdom. Whenever we call her she comes instantly to support us. It is very hard to go near her. If we go near her it is sure that we will come out of all our troubles. The ways and methods of rituals to get rid of various problems. To have good kids, those who need the kids should eat the rice offered to her everyday for a period of at least 48 days. It is very sure that they will get good kids. To get rid of the mind related troubles “Panakam” (sweet water prepared with sugar candy and dried ginger) is to be offered to her and the offered sweet water is to be drunk by the person having mental troubles. To get rid of the enemies we have to light the lamp with mustard oil. To get rid of the evil spirits we have to offer her butter. By having this holy bath she becomes cool and blesses the devotees with cool walk of life. To attract the mind of a female one should offer betel leaves, betel nuts with spices like cardamom, nutmeg and menthol. By this offering she is pleased and she makes the mind of the girl to turn towards the person. She cures the different kinds of fever. Fever means not only the hike of temperature in the physical body. It refers to the heat in the mind and poverty. She easily removes these kinds of things. We have another trouble. It is called a Dhrushti or bad eyes or najar. This is the worst one. By praying Sri.Soolini Durga on Tuesdays and Fridays with the offering of lemon, we can easily come across the thing.
