Verb Patterns – the story so far ..... Here is a reminder of some verb patterns you have learned so far : 1 the infinitive = eg: to go all er to play jou er to finish fin ir to wait att end re 2 the present tense = the present tense change the verb endings eg: jou er je jou e tu jou es il jou e elle jou e nous jou ons vous jou ez ils jou ent the future = 3 eg: going to play I am going to play Je vais jouer I am going to do Je vais faire
How many different forms of the perfect tense are there in English ? The Perfect Tense – Le Passé Composé I eat an apple a day I an apple I an apple I an apple ! ate have eaten did eat There are 3 different forms of the perfect tense in English ! It can be very confusing !
The Perfect Tense – Le Passé Composé 3 different forms in English BUT only one way in French. In many respects it is simpler. The French perfect tense is formed in exactly the same way as this form of the English perfect tense : I have eaten an apple J’ ai mangé une pomme
The Perfect Tense – Le Passé Composé ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],I have eaten an apple J’ ai mangé une pomme
The Perfect Tense – Le passé composé What would these mean ? i) J ’ ai regardé i) I have watched ii) J ’ ai acheté ii) I have bought iii) J ’ ai nagé iii) I have swum iv) J ’ ai mangé iv) I have eaten In English you can leave the ‘have’ out i) I watched ii) I bought iii) I swam iv) I ate In French you can’t leave the ‘have’ out
The Perfect Tense – Le passé composé So to recap... To form the perfect tense in French you always need 3 parts: ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],J ’ ai mangé = I have eaten = I ate = I did eat
The Perfect Tense – Le Passé Composé You need to know the parts of the verb ‘to have’ = ‘avoir’ they you (pl) we we he/she you I ils/elles vous nous on il/elle tu Je ont avez avons a a as ai J’ ai
The Perfect Tense – Le Passé Composé Fill in the correct part of ‘avoir’ into these sentences and translate them into English as ai avons ont avez a avons a as ont When you translate these into English it is actually more common to leave the ‘have’ out. eg: I phoned this morning they you we we he/she you I ils/elles vous nous on il/elle tu Je ont avez avons a a as ai J’ ai 10 ils n’.............................. pas acheté la maison 9 tu n’............. pas attendu ton ami ? 8 on n’.................. pas fini 7 Philippe et moi ............................. d î né au restaurant 6 Philippe ................. préparé le diner 5 Qu’est-ce que vous ............................. fait ? 4 Marie et Hélène ................. fini leurs devoirs 3 Nous ................................ regardé un feuilleton à la télé 2 J’ ................................ téléphoné ce matin 1 Qu’est-ce que tu ....................... mangé ?
The Perfect Tense – Le Passé Composé You need to know how to form the past participle of the main verb 1) ‘- er ’ infinitives > é eg: mang er -> mang é 2) ‘- ir ’ infinitives > i eg: fin ir -> fin i 3) ‘- re ’ infinitives > u eg: attend re -> attend u 4) Then there are the irregular past participles…
The Perfect Tense – Le Passé Composé Fill in the missing past participles here : regardé fini acheté attendu mangé vendu entendu aimé choisi trouvé perdu Nous avons ........................... le bus ( attendre ) Ils ont beaucoup .................................. ( manger ) Elle a ................................... sa Porsche ( vendre ) J’ai .......................... La musique au concert ( entendre ) Vous avez ........................... le film ? ( aimer ) On a ................................. un bon hôtel ( choisir ) Tu as .................................. ton passeport ? ( trouver ) Non je l’ai .............................. ( perdre ) Il a ................................ une voiture ( acheter ) Tu as ................................ tes devoirs ? ( finir ) J’ai ......................................... le film ( regarder )
The Perfect Tense – Le Passé Composé Some past participles are irregular – they follow a pattern of their own – here are some of the verbs that you know already: lu lire = to read voulu vouloir = to want to recevoir = to receive voir = to see être = to be avoir = to have faire = to do / make boire = to drink mettre = to put prendre = to take / catch (train) / to have (food/drink) fait eu été vu reçu bu mis pris
The Perfect Tense – Le Passé Composé Translate these into French I have taken J’ai pris he has had il a eu we have been nous avons été they received ils ont reçu you (s) have seen tu as vu we have wanted on a voulu he drank il a bu they caught a train ils ont pris un train they you we we he/she you I ils/elles vous nous on il/elle tu Je ont avez avons a a as ai J’ ai lu = read bu = drank reçu = received voulu = wanted fait = did / made eu = had été = been vu = seen mis = put, wore pris = took, had (food)
The Perfect Tense – Le Passé Composé Qu’est-ce que vous avez fait à Paris ? Nous (faire) du shopping. On (acheter) des souvenirs. Nous (faire) des promenades en ville. Nous (voir) Marcel Marceau. On (manger) aux restaurants super. Nous (visiter) la tour Eiffel. On (voir) des films au cinéma. C’était vraiment super ! avons fait a acheté avons fait avons vu a mangé avons visité a vu
