1. Brain Architecture – The Cortex
Cerebellum
Both halves of the brain have 4 ‘lobes’. There is an additional
structure at the back of the brain called the ‘Cerebellum’.
5. OCCIPITAL LOBES
The Occipital Lobes, at the back of your brain, are
covered by your visual cortex which is about the
size of a credit card. This area makes sense of
things that we SEE.
9. PARIETAL LOBES
The Parietal Lobes, on the top, has areas that
process information related to senses such as
touch, taste and pain as well as a part related to
planning movements in a strip known as the
motor cortex.
11. FRONTAL LOBES
The Frontal Lobes, in the front of the brain, are
proportionally larger in humans than any other
animal. The Frontal Lobes are used for lots of
uniquely human skills such as planning and
reasoning.
12. Brain Architecture – Other Structures
LIMBIC SYSTEM
BRAIN STEM
There are two additional structures in the human
brain – the Limbic System and the Brain Stem.
14. Brain Architecture – Other Structures
LIMBIC SYSTEM
The Limbic System is an additional structure deep inside the brain.
This generates instinctive emotions and reactions such as fear and
excitement. Often these emotions occur without our thinking
about it and scientists think the limbic system of humans is much
like that of other animals.
16. BRAIN STEM
The Brain Stem connects your brain to the nerves in
your body. The brain stem controls all sorts of vital
functions that keep you alive and that you don’t
have to think about consciously like your heartbeat
and breathing.
