Body Feathers
Flight Feathers
Feathers
Down feathers are soft and short.
Lie next to bird’s skin.
Help to keep bird’s body worm.
Body feathers give shape to bird’s body.
Cover the whole body.
Flight feathers are on wings and tail.
Help to fly and to change direction while flying.
Beaks
Mouth of Birds is called Beak. They use their beak to eat.
The shape of beak depends upon the type of food they eat.
They also use beaks to build nests. They clean and smoothen their feathers with their beaks. It is called as Preening.
Beaks: Strong, Short and Hard
Birds like Sparrow, Pigeons eat nuts and seeds.
They need strong beak to crack open their food.
So they have Strong, Short and Hard beaks.
Sparrow’s Beak
Pigeon’s Beak
Eastern Yellow Robin’s Beak
Beaks: Strong, Sharp and Hooked
Eagles, Vultures and Hawks eat flesh of other birds and animals.
So their beaks are Strong, Sharp and Hooked.
They are called birds of prey.
Vulture’s Beak
Hawk’s Beak
Eagle’s Beak
Beaks: Strong Chisel Shaped
Woodpeckers, Hoopoes pokes holes in hard tree trunks to pull out insects to eat.
So they have Strong Chisel shaped beaks.
Woodpecker’s Beak
Hoopoes' Beak
Woodpecker’s Beak
Beaks: Broad and Flat
Ducks, Goose and few Cranes eat fish and insects from muddy water.
So they have got Broad and Flat beaks with holes on either side.
The muddy water flows out through these holes.
Duck’s Beak
Goose’s Beak
Crane’s Beak
Beaks: Long and Pointed
Humming birds, Sunbirds eat the nectar from flowers.
So they have Long and Pointed beaks.
They need to pierce their beak into flowers to suck the nectar.

Feet
Birds have two feet.
They have four toes for walking, hopping, picking thing, catching and holding food.
Different birds have different types of feet.
Perching Bird Feet
Birds like Pigeons, Sparrows, Crow and Parrots perches or sits on tree branches.
They have feet that help them to grip thin or thick branches easily.
They have four toes; Three face forward and the Fourth faces backwards.
They can move each toe independently.
Parrot’s Feet
Sparrow’s Feet
Pigeon’s Feet
Crow’s Feet
Talons Feet
Eagles, Hawks and Vultures eat or hunt other animals.
They need Sharp, Hooked claws to catch their prey.
These sharp, hooked claws are called as Talons.
Eagle’s Feet
Owl’s Feet
Vulture’s Feet
Hawk’s Feet
Trowels Feet
Hens, Roosters need to scratch grounds to take out worms and seeds.
Trowel is a tool used to digging.
Hen’s feet work like trowels when they scratch the mud.

Climbing Birds Feet
Birds like Woodpeckers climb the tree and need to hold on to trees.
They have two sharp claws pointing in each directions on their each foot.
It helps them to hold the trees and balance while they tap on the tree trunk.
Woodpecker

Webbed Feet
Ducks, Goose have feet with front toes joined by the skin.
That’s why their feet appear flat. Such feet are called webbed feet.
Webbed feet work like paddles and help these in swimming.
Duck
Goose Feet
Duck Feet
Goose
Wading Birds Feet
Herons and Storks are wading birds who can walk in shallow waters.
They have long, slender legs with spread out toes.
These spread toes help them to walk in water easily while catching the birds.

Birds Chirp
Birds do not have teeth. They have a tongue which helps them to make sounds.
Birds use special sounds to call their mates. We can identify bird from its call.
Parrot is a special bird who can copy human sounds and almost can speak like us.

Nests
Home of birds is called as a Nest. Birds make their nests to lay eggs and raise their young ones.
A baby bird is called a Chick. It stays in the nest till they get old enough to fly. Then they leave and fly off.
Birds use Straw, Fiber, Wool, Cotton, Thread, Twigs, Leaves and even paper to build their Nests.
Nests
Mother birds lay eggs in the nests.
Then they take care of eggs and keep them warm till they are ready to hatch.
Different birds build different types of nests.

Migration
When the weather of a place becomes unsuitable for birds; they fly away to other places. They come back when the weather changes again. This process is called as Migration.
And the birds are called Migratory Birds.
Migratory Birds
In winter when it is vey cold in Siberia, the Siberian Cranes fly to India.
