Winter means we'd be busy again everyday de-icing and cleaning the driveway, but do you know which kind of salt is most ideal for the job and how often to use it? This presentation explains.

2. As the cold temperatures start to bite this winter, more and more of
us are going to wake up to a winter wonderland of gorgeous
sunrises glistening off the trees, cars and driveway and for a
moment as we brew our first cuppa we drift away thinking how
wonderful it all looks.
But then we have to venture outside and walk carefully to our car in
attempt not to look like a complete buffoon or take a tumble
ending up with a bruised behind.
Let’s face it, it’s time to get that driveway cleared.
3. First of all, I’ll admit that table salt is usually very cheap, I’ve seen it for 50p for a huge
bottle and so it’s tempting to pour it all over the path and drive, but there’s a
problem. The immediate issue is that when the snow melts and the sun gets on it,
it’ll soon be washed away so the next day you’ll be doing it all again. Not only that,
it’ll probably be black ice in the morning – even worse than it was before.
Very quickly you find yourself going through salt like crazy and this is when the shop
shelves get stripped bare.
Many people immediately reach for the kitchen cupboard and raid it
for good old fashioned table salt (by the way, going for the
expensive kosher salt is a no-no, you’re likely to get a rolling pin on
the back of your hands) and this can work, but it’s got side effects.
4. So, use salt sparingly and don’t just pour it liberally all over the
drive, try to stick to using pathways and where the car will be
exiting and entering.
But also, consider using rock salt instead. This is even cheaper
than table salt and due to it being made up of larger crystals,
will not wash away as easily as table salt.
The best thing is to keep a big bag of it by the door or easily
accessible in the garage and remember to keep a small trowel
or shovel nearby so you can get it out the bag easily.
