In 1956, the states of Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, and
Bhopal were merged into Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal became
the new capital of the state.
In November 2000, as part of the Madhya Pradesh
Reorganization Act, the southeastern portion of the state split
off to form the new state of Chhattisgarh.

Khajoraho: Situated in Chatarpur District, Khajuraho
refers to a group of monuments and it is one of the
most popular tourist places in India. Here you can
see Jain and Hindu Temples, which were made
during the medieval period and sensuous sculptures
that are mainly made with sandstones.
There is direct rail route to reach Khajuraho
connected by Jhansi, Agra, Delhi. The nearest rail-
heads are Harpalpur (94km) and Mahoba (63km).

The Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological World Heritage site located
in Raisen District in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The Bhimbetka shelters exhibit
the earliest traces of human life in India and deliver traces of dance. Some of the Stone
Age rock paintings found among the Bhimbetka rock shelters are approximately 30,000
years old. Bhimbetka is best reached from Bhopal. Bhimbetka is 46 km from Bhopal on
NH 69. Bhimbetka is well connected by road with Bhopal. Bhopal is connected to
Mumbai; Ahmedabad; Delhi; Gwalior ; Indore.

Located in Raisen District of Madhya Pradesh, Sanchi is a small village. It houses
several Buddhist monuments built between 3rd century and 12th century. One of the first
stone structures in India is the Great Stupa at Sanchi, which people visit from all over the
world. Reaching Sanchi is convenient. Sanchi lies on the Jhansi -Itarsi section of the
Central Railways. The most convenient railhead is Vidisha (10km) and Bhopal (46km).
Good motorable roads connect Sanchi with Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior.

indoRe: Indore is known as the city of the Holkars. The city was built by a Holkar
Rani Ahilya Bai, one of the famous queens of India. Located in the Narmada River valley
in the western part of the state.

The Rajwada or the Old Palace (a major centre of attraction),
Lalbagh palace (another architectural wonder),
Kanch Mandir (a marvelous Jain temple),

The Chanderi and Maheshwari silks of Indore are the other famous attractions of this city.
pachmaRhi: Pachmarhi is a hill station in Hoshangabad district, also known for
the Pachmarhi Cantonment It is widely known as Satpura ki Rani ("Queen of Satpura"). It offers
absolute tranquility. Bridle paths lead into placid forest groves of wild bamboo, jamun, dense sal
forests and delicate bamboo thickets.
Must see in pachmarhi:
Bee –Fall: The height of this waterfall is about 150 feet. It gives a feel of Milky Way when water
comes down. It is one of the most spectacular water falls of Pachmarhi.
Apsara Vihar: The water falls continuously upon a small kund creates a magic. Apsara vihar is a
bathing pool; here visitors can’t resist them to get away from bathing in this kund.
Rajat Fall: Rajat Water fall is around a kilometer away from Apsara Vihar. Here waterfalls down
from a height of about 350 feet. Pearl drops generated from water fall appear like shining pearls
floating in the air. It becomes more beautiful in rainy season.
Mandu, the fortress of joy, is in the Vindhya Range . With-in this well-defended plateau is wealth of
palaces, pleasure pavilions, mansions, tombs and mosques. The hill range is endowed with a very
attractive natural scenery, which is at its best during the rainy season, when on all sides, it is
clothed in green.
Attractions:
Rewa Kund: A reservoir, built by Baz Bahadur with an aqueduct to provide Roopmati's palace with
water. Today, the pool is revered as a sacred spot.
Jahaz Mehal/Ship Palace: Situated between two artificial lakes, this two storied architectural
marvel is so named as it appears as a ship floating in water. Built by Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din-Khilji, it
served as a harem for the sultan.
The Darwazas/Gates: One of the many gateways punctuating the wall encompassing Mandu.
The wall encompassing Mandu has 12 major gates or darwazas. The present road, through which
Mandu is reached passes through many of these. Also encountered are smaller gateways built to
provide protection to the above-mentioned 12 gates.

Bhopal, capital of Madhya Pradesh combines scenic
beauty, historicity and modern urban planning. Bhopal
today presents a multi-faceted profile; the old city with its
teeming market places and fine old mosques and palaces
still bear the aristocratic imprint of its former rulers.
Places of interest:
Upper Lake: The largest artificial lake in Asia.
Aquarium Building: Facing the Lower Lake, the fish-
shaped aquarium houses a number of fascinating species
of fish in all shapes and sizes.
Kerwa Dam: It is a scenic dam located in the outskirts of
Bhopal.
CHOWK: In the heart of the city, the Chowk is lined with old
mosques, havelis. The shops in its narrow alleys are
treasure troves of traditional Bhopali crafts : silver jewellery,
exquisitely fashioned beadwork, embroidered and sequined
velvet fashioned purses and cushions.
LAXMI NARAYAN TEMPLE AND MUSEUM :
This beautiful temple on the Arera Hills has a Museum
attached to it which houses a collection of sculptures from
Raisen, Sehore, Mandsaur and Shahdol districts of Madhya
Pradesh.

ujjain
On the bank of Kshipra River, ujjain is an ancient city of
Madhya Pradesh. The places to see in Ujjain are Mahakal
Temple, Sri Sri Radha Madan Mohan Temple, the temple
of Chintaman Ganesh. Ujjain is well connected to Bhopal
through railways and roadways. Many express trains runs
between these two cities daily, taking around 4 hours. Bus
services can be opted to reach Ujjain From Bhopal.

It is a Hindu temple dedicated to God Shiva. It is one
of the 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. It is on
an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in
the Narmada river; the shape of the island is said to be
like the Hindu ॐ symbol. There are two temples here,
one to Omkareshwar (whose name means "Lord
of Omkaara or the Lord of the Om Sound") and one to
Amareshwar (whose name means "Immortal lord" or
"lord of the Immortals or Devas").
chitRakoot: Chitrakoot is a town and a nagar
panchayatin Satna district in the state. It is a town of religious, cultural,
histoical and archaeological importance, situated in the Bundelkhand region.
Many people gather here on each Amavasya. Somwati
Amavasyas, Deepawali, Sharad-Poornima, Makar
Sankranti and Ramanavami are special occasions for such gatherings and
celebrations.
Places of Interest:
Ramghat
The ghats that line the Mandakini river are called Ramghat. During the exile
period Rama, Lakshmana and Sita took bath here and believed to have
appeared before the poet Tulsidas.
Janaki Kund
Janaki Kund is situated upstream of the Ramghat where it is believed that Sita
bathed in the crystal clear waters of Mandakini river during the years of her
exile with Rama.
Bharat Milap
Bharat Milap temple is located here, marking the spot where Bharata is said to
have met Rama to persuad him to return to the throne of Ayodhya. Foot prints
of Lord Rama and his brothers were imprinted on these rocks and are still
present today and seen in Bharat Milap Mandir.
Kamadgiri
Kamadgiri, the original Chitrakuta, is a place of prime religious significance. A
forested hill, it is skirted all along its base by a chain of temples and is
venerated today as the holy embodiment of Rama.
maheshwaR is a town in Khargone district of the state. The town lies on the
north bank of the Narmada River.
It is said that there are more than 100 temples are telling the long history of Maheshwar.
Main temples good to visit for visitors are SAHASTARARJUN Temple near the holy river
Narmada, Rajrajeshwar Mandir, Kashi Vishwanath Mandir, Chaturbhuj Narayan Mandir,
Ahilya Mata's Chhatris, Chintamani Ganpati Mandir, Pandharinath Mandir, Bhawani Mata
Mandir, Bihari, Anant Narayan Mandir, Khedapati Hanuman. Ram and Krishna Mandir.
Baneshwar temple, Kaleshwar, Jwaleshwar and Narsingh Mandir are very good for nature
lovers.

Kanha National park is located in the Mandla
district of Madhya Pradesh and it extends
over an area of over 1,940-sq-kms.
Kanha national park has 22 species of
mammals. Those most easily spotted are
TIGER, Indian hare, Indian wild dog, the
Stripped Palm Squirrel, Common langur,
Jackal, Wild Pig, Chital or Spotless deer,
Barasingha or Swamp deer, Sambar and
black Buck.
Bandhavgarh

This national park in Madhya Pradesh is the
natural habitat of animals like tiger, leopards,
rhesus, gaur, chital, dholes and nilgais. White
tigers of Rewa can be seen here and one can
enjoy an elephant ride here as well. Entrance
to Bandhavgarh. Park is from Tala, a small
village on the Umaria-Rewa highway. There
are State and Private buses to Tala.

Bhedaghat situated approximately 20 km from
Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, is known for the cluster of
marble rocks which lie on the opposite banks of river
Narmada. Boating on a moonlit night, when the whole
stretch of water is transformed into a sheet of liquid silver

orchha is a town in Tikamgarh district of the
state. The Betwa and Jamini Rivers and forests
nearby make Orchha an adventurer's paradise. The
scenic environment make up for an enthralling rafting
session down the River. The rapids take through a
wonderful journey through downstream of Kanchan
Ghat.

The Maikal mountain region in amarkantak offers an
ideal setting for mountaineering and adventure tourism.

long festival of Lokrang in Bhopal begins every year on 26th

samaroh - This cultural festival is dedicated
to the pillar of Indian classical music, the great Tansen.
The place where this great musician lies buries, Tansen
Tomb, in Gwalior is the venue of a music festival held
annually in November - December.

Papier Mache, an art practiced since times immemorial, is practiced widely in cities
like Ratlam, Bhopal, Gwalior and Ujjain. The main centre for this handicraft is Ujjain.
Human figures, birds, animals, idols of gods and goddesses, models of famous
historical buildings, etc. are made with the aid of this handicraft.

The textiles of Madhya Pradesh are a part of the rich
heritage of India. The weaving, printing and colouring
of textiles of Madhya Pradesh have been influenced by
the bordering States of Orissa, Gujarat, Maharashtra,
Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
Maheshwari Saree is one of India’s finest cotton-silk
handloom fabrics which originated in Maheshwar in
Madhya Pradesh. It is characterized by a delicate
weave. The unique feature of a Maheshwari saree is its
reversible border. The border is designed in such a way
that both sides of the saree can be worn. This is locally
known as ‘Bugdi’.
Chanderi Saree is one of the famous handloom
clusters in India, particularly known for its Sarees,
made with mix of silk and cotton. The lightweight,sheer
texture, glossy transparency and luxurious feel of its
fine, hand spun weft explains why Chanderi saris were
the choice of royalty for generations.

Apsara Vihar: The water falls continuously upon a small kund creates a magic. Apsara vihar is a bathing pool; here visitors can’t resist them to get away from bathing in this kund. Rajat Fall: Rajat Water fall is around a kilometer away from Apsara Vihar. Here waterfalls down from a height of about 350 feet. Pearl drops generated from water fall appear like shining pearls floating in the air. It becomes more beautiful in rainy season.
  • 13. Mandu, the fortress of joy, is in the Vindhya Range . With-in this well-defended plateau is wealth of palaces, pleasure pavilions, mansions, tombs and mosques. The hill range is endowed with a very attractive natural scenery, which is at its best during the rainy season, when on all sides, it is clothed in green. Attractions: Rewa Kund: A reservoir, built by Baz Bahadur with an aqueduct to provide Roopmati's palace with water. Today, the pool is revered as a sacred spot. Jahaz Mehal/Ship Palace: Situated between two artificial lakes, this two storied architectural marvel is so named as it appears as a ship floating in water. Built by Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din-Khilji, it served as a harem for the sultan. The Darwazas/Gates: One of the many gateways punctuating the wall encompassing Mandu. The wall encompassing Mandu has 12 major gates or darwazas. The present road, through which Mandu is reached passes through many of these.   • 16. ujjain On the bank of Kshipra River, ujjain is an ancient city of Madhya Pradesh. The places to see in Ujjain are Mahakal Temple, Sri Sri Radha Madan Mohan Temple, the temple of Chintaman Ganesh. Ujjain is well connected to Bhopal through railways and roadways. It is a town of religious, cultural, histoical and archaeological importance, situated in the Bundelkhand region. Many people gather here on each Amavasya. Somwati Amavasyas, Deepawali, Sharad-Poornima, Makar Sankranti and Ramanavami are special occasions for such gatherings and celebrations. Places of Interest: Ramghat The ghats that line the Mandakini river are called Ramghat. During the exile period Rama, Lakshmana and Sita took bath here and believed to have appeared before the poet Tulsidas. Janaki Kund Janaki Kund is situated upstream of the Ramghat where it is believed that Sita bathed in the crystal clear waters of Mandakini river during the years of her exile with Rama. Bharat Milap Bharat Milap temple is located here, marking the spot where Bharata is said to have met Rama to persuad him to return to the throne of Ayodhya. Foot prints of Lord Rama and his brothers were imprinted on these rocks and are still present today and seen in Bharat Milap Mandir. Kamadgiri Kamadgiri, the original Chitrakuta, is a place of prime religious significance. A forested hill, it is skirted all along its base by a chain of temples and is venerated today as the holy embodiment of Rama.
