When I look at You—Miley Cyrus

“Everybody needs inspiration, everybody needs a song, a beautiful melody when the night’s so
long because there is no guarantee that this life is easy…. When I look at you, I see forgiveness, I see the
truth. You love me for who I am like the stars that hold the moon right where they belong, and I know
I’m not alone. And when my world is falling apart, when there’s no light to break up the dark that’s
when I look at you. When the waves are flooding the shore and I can’t find my way home anymore
that’s when I look at you. When I look at you.”

This song is on the original soundtrack of The Last Song. I chose this song to include in my
playlist because it demonstrates the purity of love. It shows that love is the answer to all questions, and
it cannot fail. Love is often seeked as a refuge, and it never gives up.

Little House—Amanda Seyfried

“I love this place but it’s haunted without you. My tired heart is beating so slow. Our hearts
sing less than we wanted, we wanted. Our hearts sing because we do not know, we do not know. To
light the night, to help us grow. To help us grow. It is not said, I always know. You can catch me. Don’t
you run, don’t you run. If you live another day in this happy little house the fire is here to stay. To light
the night, to help us grow. To help us grow. It is not said, I always know. Please don’t make a fuss, it
won’t go away. The wonder of it all, the wonder that I made… I am here to stay. I am here to stay.
Stay.”

This song is on the original soundtrack of Dear John. I chose to include it in my playlist because,
to me, it shows the exhaustion that comes with love. Yes, love is great. But it requires a lot of work, a
lot of compromise. And a lot of times, it can be overwhelming. This song is a sad song, with a slow
tune. But it’s also a happy theme, one about living apart and dealing with the pain love brings. Then the
ray of light shines through the clouds, the happiness pokes out of the pain. And it’s all worth it in the
end.

Set Fire to the Third Bar—Snow Patrol

“I find the map and draw a straight line over rivers, farms, and state lines. The distance from me
to where you’d be, it’s only finger-lengths that I see. I touch the place where I’d find your face. My
fingers in creases of distant, dark places. I hang my coat up in the first bar, there is no peace that I’ve
found so far. The laughter penetrates my silence, as drunken men find flaws in science. Their words
mostly noises, ghosts with just voices. Your words in my memory are like music to me… I’m miles from
where you are. I lay down on the cold ground and I pray that something picks me up, and sets me down
in your warm arms. After I have traveled so far, we’d set the fire to the third bar. We’d share each
other like an island until exhausted close our eyelids and dreaming pick up from the last place we left
off. Your soft skin is weaping, a joy you can’t keep in… I’m miles from where you are. I lay down on the
cold ground and I pray that something picks me up and sets me down in your warm arms. I’m miles
from where you are. I lay down on the cold ground and I pray that something picks me up and sets me
down in your warm arms.”

This song is also on the original soundtrack of Dear John. I chose this song to be on my playlist
because it is a song about distance. With Dear John, it works perfectly, because John is in the army,
leaving Savannah alone. She is in one place, missing him, while he is in another, missing her. And I think
this song works for a lot of things, not just those two characters. The chorus of this song is my favorite,
mainly because it reminds me of atmosphere. A lot of struggles that (young people especially) deal with
is atmosphere. When you’re upset, it’s hard not to see everything in a tainted way, no matter how
positive it is. So, the ground is cold, because you’re feeling cold and so on. Distance is hard, but it
cannot stop love.

Dream—Priscilla Ahn

“I was a little girl alone in my little world who dreamed of a little home for me. I played pretend
between the trees, and fed my houseguests bark and leaves and laughed in my pretty bed of green. I
had a dream that I could fly from the highest swing. I had a dream. Longs walk in the dark through
woods grown behind the park, I asked God who I’m supposed to be. The stars smiled down on me, God
answered in silent reverie. I said a prayer and fell asleep. I had a dream that I could fly from the highest
tree, I had a dream. Now I’m old and feelings grey, I don’t know what’s left to say about this life I’m
willing to leave. I lived it full, I lived it well, there’s many tales I’ve lived to tell. I’m ready now. I’m
ready now. I’m ready now to fly from the highest wing. I had a dream.”

I love this song’s innocence and tranquility. If I could place this song with one of Sparks’s
characters, I would use Jamie Sullivan from A Walk to Remember. She is a character who is very
religious, her father is a preacher. She has cancer, yet finds a way to smile and live life the best way she
can during it. She doesn’t question God, she isn’t angry. Her amount of trust in Him is bewildering, and
Sparks writes her out to be so sure of everything, so sweet toward everything. This song has violins and
gentle pianos playing and it gives me this feeling of calmness and beauty, as if I’m caught in a world of
perfect happiness that could never be shattered. In the end, Jamie dies, which shows the part of the
song ‘the life I’m willing to leave, l’m ready now’. When I hear this song, I can picture the atmosphere
and I can feel the emotions I would feel if I was really there. Nicholas Sparks’s books do that, as well.
So, in my opinion, it’s perfect.

That’s All—Michael Buble

“I can only give you love that lasts forever, and a promise to be near each time you call. And the
only heart I own for you, and you alone. That’s all. That’s all. I can only give you country walks in
springtime, and a hand to hold when leaves begin to fall and a love whose burning light will warm the
winter night. That’s all. That’s all. There are those, I am sure, who have told you they would give you
the world for a toy. All I have are these arms to enfold you and a love time can never destroy. If you’re
wondering what I’m asking in return, dear, you’ll be glad to know that my demands are small. Say it’s
me that you’ll adore for now and evermore, that’s all. That’s all.”

I chose this song for my playlist because of the purity that comes with it. The lyrics describe
someone who is in love, deeply, truly, genuinly, and admits he doesn’t have any money or possessions
to give, but that he will love her forever. In this world, I think it’s easy to become materialistic. But,
every girl wants love. Every girl wants romance that means something, that Hollywood feel. And this
song displays it perfectly, a man who will say he doesn’t have anything to give but his love. And the
power of love is worth more than any item on this earth, love is the greatest gift. All of Nicholas
Sparks’s books are about love conquering, above all things. He writes love stories, pure and wonderful,
and there is nothing more pure and wonderful than this.

Amazed—Lonestar

“Every time our eyes meet, this feeling inside me is almost more than I can take. Baby when you
touch me I can feel how much you love me and it just blows me away. I’ve never been this close to
anyone or anything. I can hear your thoughts, I can see your dreams. The smell of your skin, the taste
of your kiss, the way you whisper in the dark. Your hair all around me, baby you surround me and touch
every place in my heart. Oh, it feels like the first time, every time. I want to spend the whole night in
your eyes. I don’t know how you do what you do. I’m so in love with you. It just keeps getting better. I
want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side, forever and ever. Every little thing that you do,
baby I’m amazed by you.”

This song reminds me of the first stages of love, when the emotions are so strong and you want
to be with the person all the time. It is said that those hot, heavy, romantic feelings that you get the
first phase of love fades a little the further you go, but that the foundation of friendship is what gets you
through. This song displays that summer love feeling, where everything about the other person is
intriging and you just keep falling and learning more and more about the person and liking everything
you learn. If I could compare this to a character, I would use Will from the Last Song, because from the
moment he lays eyes on Ronnie, he wants to learn more, his interest levels are spiked. And then he falls
quickly, and every day gets better. I love that.

With Light there is Hope—Princess One Point Five

“Run. Don’t walk. Please don’t look back. When you’re uncertain just turn and run. Run away.
With light there is hope. Careful not to linger. It’s exhausting, this different view on… with you there is
hope. In time you will learn there is nothing best charming than charming love. It’s amazing this change
in you. Careful not to linger. With light there is hope. With light there is hope. Careful not to linger…”
This song isn’t about love as much, and that’s why I chose it. This song is more about fear. A lot
of people deny love or miss their chance for love because they are afraid of rejection or abandonment
or pain. This song reminds me of the little v oice in your head that is too afraid to let you live your life
and take chances you should take. Everyone has that voice, it just depends on whether or not you
choose to listen to it.

Three Wishes—The Pierces

“We’d be so less fragile if we were made from metal and our hearts from iron and our minds
from steel. And if we built an armor for our tender bodies could we love each other? Would we stop to
feel? You want three wishes: one to fly the heavens, one to swim like fishes and then one you’re saving
for a rainy day if your lover ever takes her love away. You say you want to know her like a lover and
undo her damage, she’ll be new again. Soon you’ll find that if you try to save her it will lose her anger
but you will never win. You want three wishes: you want never bitter and all delicious and then one
you’re saving for a rainy day if your lover ever takes her love away. You want three wishes: one to fly
the heavens, one to swim like fishes, you want never bitter and all delicious and a clean conscience and
all it’s blisses. You want one true lover with a thousand kisses, you want soft and gentle and never
vicious and then one you’re saving for a rainy day, if your lover ever takes her love away.”

I chose this song on my playlist because a constsant theme of Nicholas Sparks’ books is tragedy.
There is always the Hollywood ending that you want to see happen, but he mixes it up and it never
actually is a happily-ever-after ending. He does, however, display true love and what it means in the
form of putting the other above yourself, compromise, selfless deeds and maturity. But, as a reader,
you hope the characters will end up together and happy. This song reminds me of that.

New Day—Tamar Kaprelian

“Before the light had found the dark, before tonight had fell apart, frozen up I realized
something’s gotta change. It took a crash to understand time kept slipping through my hands, I never
used to know that the sun will shine after the rain. I was sleeping in a twisted dream, dying just to
make believe a pretty situation was far from where I was. But I’m not up for giving up, lying down and
out of luck. By my mistakes are now in the open and now I’m finally coming clean. Say goodbye, say
goodbye to the way I was before. Say hello, say hello to a new way. I was lost but I found what I was
looking for. Waking up, waking up to a new day. I’m healing and feeling all of my scars. Waking up to a
new day. A new day.”

I chose this song on my playlist because it is about self-help and learning to improve your life
and increase your happiness and take chances- but it has nothing to do with falling in love. One thing
that romance novels always incorporates is a personal wall that a character needs to climb over or break
down, but that wall falls because they fall in love. But that’s not always the case in reality. I think you
need to break down those walls on your own, without needing someone else there, and just learn to
heal on your own. Then you will be truly happy.
These Walls—Teddy Geiger

“I can’t believe what is in front of me. The water’s rising up to my knees and I can’t figure out
how the hell I wound up here. Everything seemed okay when I started out the other day, then the rain
came pourding down and now I’m drowning in my fears and as I watch the setting sun, I wonder if I’m
the only one. I’ve got no master plan to help me out, or make me stand up for all the things I really
want. You had me too afraid to ask and as I look ahead of me I cry and pray for sanity. These walls can’t
be my haven, these walls can’t keep me safe here and now I guess I’ve got to let them down. Because
everybody tries to put some love on the line, and everybody feels a broken heart sometimes and even
when I’m scared I have to try to fly. Sometimes I fall but I’ve seen it done before. I’ve got to step
outside these walls. I’ve got to break out. I’ve got to break out. I got to step outside these walls, love
outside these walls. I feel my heart breaking but it’s a brand new day and I’m going down, I’m stepping
out, I’m stepping outside these walls. I’m stepping outside these walls.”

This song also relates to fear, and learning to overcome it. Whether it is for love (which usually
it is) or anything relating to stepping outside your comfort zone, this song relates that the walls aren’t
helping you. They are actually hurting you more than you would get hurt if you let them down. This
song displays for me that sense of confidence and self-worth. Taking chances is a good thing.

I love you—Sarah Mclachlan

“I have a smile stretched from ear to ear to see you walking down the road. We meet at the
lights, I stare for a while. The world around disappears. Just you and me, on this island of hope, a
breath between us could be miles. Let me surround you, my sea to your shore. Let me be the calm you
seek. Everytime I’m close to you, there’s so much I can’t say… and you just walk away. And I forgot to
tell you I love you and the night’s too long and cold here without you. I grieve in my condition for I
cannot find the strength to say I need you. Everytime I’m close to you there’s too much I can’t say… and
you just walk away. And I forgot to tell you I love you and the night’s too long and cold here without
you.”

I chose this song for my playlist because it displays that form of love that is unspoken. There are
always things we wish we would have said, feelings we hide, emotions we bury, for any and every
reason. We all feel this way at one point in our lives.

Samantha's Music Playlist for Nicholas Sparks, 2nd period

  • 1. When I look at You—Miley Cyrus “Everybody needs inspiration, everybody needs a song, a beautiful melody when the night’s so long because there is no guarantee that this life is easy…. When I look at you, I see forgiveness, I see the truth. You love me for who I am like the stars that hold the moon right where they belong, and I know I’m not alone. And when my world is falling apart, when there’s no light to break up the dark that’s when I look at you. When the waves are flooding the shore and I can’t find my way home anymore that’s when I look at you. When I look at you.” This song is on the original soundtrack of The Last Song. I chose this song to include in my playlist because it demonstrates the purity of love. It shows that love is the answer to all questions, and it cannot fail. Love is often seeked as a refuge, and it never gives up. Little House—Amanda Seyfried “I love this place but it’s haunted without you. My tired heart is beating so slow. Our hearts sing less than we wanted, we wanted. Our hearts sing because we do not know, we do not know. To light the night, to help us grow. To help us grow. It is not said, I always know. You can catch me. Don’t you run, don’t you run. If you live another day in this happy little house the fire is here to stay. To light the night, to help us grow. To help us grow. It is not said, I always know. Please don’t make a fuss, it won’t go away. The wonder of it all, the wonder that I made… I am here to stay. I am here to stay. Stay.” This song is on the original soundtrack of Dear John. I chose to include it in my playlist because, to me, it shows the exhaustion that comes with love. Yes, love is great. But it requires a lot of work, a lot of compromise. And a lot of times, it can be overwhelming. This song is a sad song, with a slow tune. But it’s also a happy theme, one about living apart and dealing with the pain love brings. Then the ray of light shines through the clouds, the happiness pokes out of the pain. And it’s all worth it in the end. Set Fire to the Third Bar—Snow Patrol “I find the map and draw a straight line over rivers, farms, and state lines. The distance from me to where you’d be, it’s only finger-lengths that I see. I touch the place where I’d find your face. My fingers in creases of distant, dark places. I hang my coat up in the first bar, there is no peace that I’ve found so far. The laughter penetrates my silence, as drunken men find flaws in science. Their words mostly noises, ghosts with just voices. Your words in my memory are like music to me… I’m miles from where you are. I lay down on the cold ground and I pray that something picks me up, and sets me down in your warm arms. After I have traveled so far, we’d set the fire to the third bar. We’d share each other like an island until exhausted close our eyelids and dreaming pick up from the last place we left off. Your soft skin is weaping, a joy you can’t keep in… I’m miles from where you are. I lay down on the

I lay down on the cold ground and I pray that something picks me up and sets me down in your warm arms.” This song is also on the original soundtrack of Dear John. I chose this song to be on my playlist because it is a song about distance. With Dear John, it works perfectly, because John is in the army, leaving Savannah alone. She is in one place, missing him, while he is in another, missing her. And I think this song works for a lot of things, not just those two characters. The chorus of this song is my favorite, mainly because it reminds me of atmosphere. A lot of struggles that (young people especially) deal with is atmosphere. When you’re upset, it’s hard not to see everything in a tainted way, no matter how positive it is. So, the ground is cold, because you’re feeling cold and so on. Distance is hard, but it cannot stop love. Dream—Priscilla Ahn “I was a little girl alone in my little world who dreamed of a little home for me. I played pretend between the trees, and fed my houseguests bark and leaves and laughed in my pretty bed of green. I had a dream that I could fly from the highest swing. I had a dream. Longs walk in the dark through woods grown behind the park, I asked God who I’m supposed to be. The stars smiled down on me, God answered in silent reverie. I said a prayer and fell asleep. I had a dream that I could fly from the highest tree, I had a dream. Now I’m old and feelings grey, I don’t know what’s left to say about this life I’m willing to leave. I lived it full, I lived it well, there’s many tales I’ve lived to tell. I’m ready now. I’m ready now. I’m ready now to fly from the highest wing. I had a dream.” I love this song’s innocence and tranquility. If I could place this song with one of Sparks’s characters, I would use Jamie Sullivan from A Walk to Remember. She is a character who is very religious, her father is a preacher. She has cancer, yet finds a way to smile and live life the best way she can during it. She doesn’t question God, she isn’t angry. Her amount of trust in Him is bewildering, and Sparks writes her out to be so sure of everything, so sweet toward everything. This song has violins and gentle pianos playing and it gives me this feeling of calmness and beauty, as if I’m caught in a world of perfect happiness that could never be shattered. In the end, Jamie dies, which shows the part of the song ‘the life I’m willing to leave, l’m ready now’. When I hear this song, I can picture the atmosphere and I can feel the emotions I would feel if I was really there. Nicholas Sparks’s books do that, as well. So, in my opinion, it’s perfect. That’s All—Michael Buble “I can only give you love that lasts forever, and a promise to be near each time you call. And the only heart I own for you, and you alone. That’s all. That’s all. I can only give you country walks in springtime, and a hand to hold when leaves begin to fall and a love whose burning light will warm the
  • 3. winter night. That’s all. That’s all. There are those, I am sure, who have told you they would give you the world for a toy. All I have are these arms to enfold you and a love time can never destroy. If you’re wondering what I’m asking in return, dear, you’ll be glad to know that my demands are small. Say it’s me that you’ll adore for now and evermore, that’s all. That’s all.” I chose this song for my playlist because of the purity that comes with it. The lyrics describe someone who is in love, deeply, truly, genuinly, and admits he doesn’t have any money or possessions to give, but that he will love her forever. In this world, I think it’s easy to become materialistic. But, every girl wants love. Every girl wants romance that means something, that Hollywood feel. And this song displays it perfectly, a man who will say he doesn’t have anything to give but his love. And the power of love is worth more than any item on this earth, love is the greatest gift. All of Nicholas Sparks’s books are about love conquering, above all things. He writes love stories, pure and wonderful, and there is nothing more pure and wonderful than this. Amazed—Lonestar “Every time our eyes meet, this feeling inside me is almost more than I can take. Baby when you touch me I can feel how much you love me and it just blows me away. I’ve never been this close to anyone or anything. I can hear your thoughts, I can see your dreams. The smell of your skin, the taste of your kiss, the way you whisper in the dark. Your hair all around me, baby you surround me and touch every place in my heart. Oh, it feels like the first time, every time. I want to spend the whole night in your eyes. I don’t know how you do what you do. I’m so in love with you. It just keeps getting better. I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side, forever and ever. Every little thing that you do, baby I’m amazed by you.” This song reminds me of the first stages of love, when the emotions are so strong and you want to be with the person all the time. It is said that those hot, heavy, romantic feelings that you get the first phase of love fades a little the further you go, but that the foundation of friendship is what gets you through. This song displays that summer love feeling, where everything about the other person is intriging and you just keep falling and learning more and more about the person and liking everything you learn. If I could compare this to a character, I would use Will from the Last Song, because from the moment he lays eyes on Ronnie, he wants to learn more, his interest levels are spiked. And then he falls quickly, and every day gets better. I love that. With Light there is Hope—Princess One Point Five “Run. Don’t walk. Please don’t look back. When you’re uncertain just turn and run. Run away. With light there is hope. Careful not to linger. It’s exhausting, this different view on… with you there is hope. In time you will learn there is nothing best charming than charming love. It’s amazing this change in you. Careful not to linger. With light there is hope. With light there is hope. Careful not to linger…”
  • 4. This song isn’t about love as much, and that’s why I chose it. This song is more about fear. A lot of people deny love or miss their chance for love because they are afraid of rejection or abandonment or pain. This song reminds me of the little v oice in your head that is too afraid to let you live your life and take chances you should take. Everyone has that voice, it just depends on whether or not you choose to listen to it. Three Wishes—The Pierces “We’d be so less fragile if we were made from metal and our hearts from iron and our minds from steel. And if we built an armor for our tender bodies could we love each other? Would we stop to feel? You want three wishes: one to fly the heavens, one to swim like fishes and then one you’re saving for a rainy day if your lover ever takes her love away. You say you want to know her like a lover and undo her damage, she’ll be new again. Soon you’ll find that if you try to save her it will lose her anger but you will never win. You want three wishes: you want never bitter and all delicious and then one you’re saving for a rainy day if your lover ever takes her love away. You want three wishes: one to fly the heavens, one to swim like fishes, you want never bitter and all delicious and a clean conscience and all it’s blisses. You want one true lover with a thousand kisses, you want soft and gentle and never vicious and then one you’re saving for a rainy day, if your lover ever takes her love away.” I chose this song on my playlist because a constsant theme of Nicholas Sparks’ books is tragedy. There is always the Hollywood ending that you want to see happen, but he mixes it up and it never actually is a happily-ever-after ending. He does, however, display true love and what it means in the form of putting the other above yourself, compromise, selfless deeds and maturity. But, as a reader, you hope the characters will end up together and happy. This song reminds me of that. New Day—Tamar Kaprelian “Before the light had found the dark, before tonight had fell apart, frozen up I realized something’s gotta change. It took a crash to understand time kept slipping through my hands, I never used to know that the sun will shine after the rain. I was sleeping in a twisted dream, dying just to make believe a pretty situation was far from where I was. But I’m not up for giving up, lying down and out of luck. By my mistakes are now in the open and now I’m finally coming clean. Say goodbye, say goodbye to the way I was before. Say hello, say hello to a new way. I was lost but I found what I was looking for. Waking up, waking up to a new day. I’m healing and feeling all of my scars. Waking up to a new day. A new day.” I chose this song on my playlist because it is about self-help and learning to improve your life and increase your happiness and take chances- but it has nothing to do with falling in love. One thing that romance novels always incorporates is a personal wall that a character needs to climb over or break down, but that wall falls because they fall in love. But that’s not always the case in reality. I think you need to break down those walls on your own, without needing someone else there, and just learn to heal on your own. Then you will be truly happy.
  • 5. These Walls—Teddy Geiger “I can’t believe what is in front of me. The water’s rising up to my knees and I can’t figure out how the hell I wound up here. Everything seemed okay when I started out the other day, then the rain came pourding down and now I’m drowning in my fears and as I watch the setting sun, I wonder if I’m the only one. I’ve got no master plan to help me out, or make me stand up for all the things I really want. You had me too afraid to ask and as I look ahead of me I cry and pray for sanity. These walls can’t be my haven, these walls can’t keep me safe here and now I guess I’ve got to let them down. Because everybody tries to put some love on the line, and everybody feels a broken heart sometimes and even when I’m scared I have to try to fly. Sometimes I fall but I’ve seen it done before. I’ve got to step outside these walls. I’ve got to break out. I’ve got to break out. I got to step outside these walls, love outside these walls. I feel my heart breaking but it’s a brand new day and I’m going down, I’m stepping out, I’m stepping outside these walls. I’m stepping outside these walls.” This song also relates to fear, and learning to overcome it. Whether it is for love (which usually it is) or anything relating to stepping outside your comfort zone, this song relates that the walls aren’t helping you. They are actually hurting you more than you would get hurt if you let them down. This song displays for me that sense of confidence and self-worth. Taking chances is a good thing. I love you—Sarah Mclachlan “I have a smile stretched from ear to ear to see you walking down the road. We meet at the lights, I stare for a while. The world around disappears. Just you and me, on this island of hope, a breath between us could be miles. Let me surround you, my sea to your shore. Let me be the calm you seek. Everytime I’m close to you, there’s so much I can’t say… and you just walk away. And I forgot to tell you I love you and the night’s too long and cold here without you. I grieve in my condition for I cannot find the strength to say I need you. Everytime I’m close to you there’s too much I can’t say… and you just walk away. And I forgot to tell you I love you and the night’s too long and cold here without you.” I chose this song for my playlist because it displays that form of love that is unspoken. There are always things we wish we would have said, feelings we hide, emotions we bury, for any and every reason. We all feel this way at one point in our lives.
