America's nearly 30 million golfers have developed colorful terms to describe aspects of the game. Some of these terms include "the beach" referring to sand traps, "drain it" meaning sinking a putt, "Willie Nelson" referring to hitting a ball onto a paved path, and "duffer/hacker" describing a player who hits many bad shots. Additional terms are "gimme" for a putt very close to the hole, and "jail" when a ball is hit deep into difficult woods.
