The presentation provides an overview on the latest Google algorithm update called Hummingbird and takes a look at how this update will affect SEO in the future.
2. WHAT IS HUMMINGBIRD?
▪ New Google algorithm and infrastructure upgrade
▪ Named for the speed and accuracy of the tiny bird
▪ The update will allow Google to leverage new deep learning models that will help
increase precision of the current algorithm
▪ Think of it as replacing an old car engine with a new engine.
3. WHAT CHANGED?
▪ No longer just looking at keywords within the query
▪ Now will look at the context of the query
▪ Will start using both text and entity based signals
▪ Google wants to answer the query,
not point you to where you can get
the answer.
4. DID IT AFFECT SEO?
Google wants to answer questions and provide that answer as an “Information Card”
within their search results. You can see these information cards for such queries as
“dallas cowboys schedule”, “nutritional values of apples”, or “who are obama’s
brothers”. While Hummingbird did not affect search engine optimization tactics it did
create these information cards to compete with the search results.
5. DID IT AFFECT SEO?
A strategy shift will need to take place for businesses. Longtail queries (5 or more
keywords) will matter more. Businesses will need to answer more questions through
comprehensive:
▪ FAQs
▪ Q&A blog posts
▪ How To blog posts
▪ Ask The Experts
▪ Where can I…
▪ Why…
▪ What… type posts.
6. WHAT ARE THE SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS?
▪ Right now, none with an asterisk.
▪ A recent study showed that there was no correlation between social signals and
improved rankings.
▪ The study did find that sharing content on Google+
drove content discovery by getting the content
indexed much faster than by other means.
▪ So here is the asterisk. Google personalized search
does take into account your social circle of friends
on Google+ and will bubble up relevant
articles/sites that have been shared within
your circles.
7. WHAT ARE THE SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS?
▪ Google previously had some technical limitations that prevented them from using
social signals within their ranking algorithm.
▪ Now with the new Hummingbird update Google has the infrastructure in place to
process those social signals.
▪ Some speculate that this will open up the potential that Google+ will impact
rankings in the future.
