The amount of characters that we are using in our film is very limited as we only have
4 characters, which is fairly average for the genre of short film.
4. We plan on using quite a few different locations in order to develop and attach
different meanings with the variety of settings. Therefore we plan on using;
An actual house
Parks
Nunhead area
A bus station/stop
Feminist library building
As we go on and develop our film further, we would understand that the location
we would be using would need to change in order to fit the criteria that we had
set for ourselves.
5. Considering that the genre for our film is ‘short film’ we have had come up
with a sub-genre or hybrid genre to go with. With that in mind we decided to
go for;
Thriller
Docu-drama
Urban/social-reaslism
This was because we wanted to capture an on going issue within today’s
society, yet also wanted to give an edge to it by making it a thriller which
would thus broaden our target audience.
6. The narrative my group and I have decided to use is Todorov’s theory equilibrium
which explains the 5 different stages;
1. State of equilibrium
2. Disruption of equilibrium
3. Recognition of disruption
4. Attempt to repair the disruption
5. Reinstatement of an equilibrium
We believe that this is the best fitting narrative for our short film as it has an
easy layout for us to follow and also we established that we use the steps
unintentionally knowing it.
7. The themes that we use within our short film come from many different
aspects of it. we had chosen to stick to having our film having low lighting as
a theme as it enables our target audience to understand and relate it to other
thriller films have low/dark lighting for most part.
Another theme that we used was keeping the scenes within an urban setting,
which gave us the capability of sustaining a more social realistic feel as we
wanted our main demographics for our target audience to fell like they could
relate to the sort of areas/locations that we had used in our short film.
8. Bearing in mind that our main sub-genre is thriller, we had to deliberate and
research into thriller films and the key iconographies shown within them.
This would allow us to come up with more of a visualisation for our own short
film in order to develop our plotlines.
Therefore we summarised a few mise-en-scene iconographies;
Low key lighting
Dark and frumpy clothing for certain characters (e.g. gloves and hoodie for
Chris as their identity should be kept secret)
Locations like said in one of the previous slides
Confined spacing and shadows
