1. Wild Things Scientists discover hundreds of species in Asia!

2. Talk about hide-and-seek! Talk about hide-and-seek! Scientists have recently spotted more that 350 new plant and animal species in southern Asia and the eastern Himalayas!

3. The Flying Frog One new species found is called a “flying” frog. It was found in India. It uses its webbed feet to float through the air! Would it be cool to fly?

4. Super Species Scientist have also been studying animals in the Himalayas. Their research spanned, or reached across, several nations of China, India, and Nepal. They found 242 new plants, reptiles, and amphibians. The team also found 14 new fish, 2 birds, and 2 mammals.

5. The Leaf Deer The scientist also discovered the leaf deer. It is less than 3 feet tall. It’s smaller than you! It is the world’s smallest deer species.

6. Mountain of Trouble The scientists are worried that the new species’ habitat, or home, is in trouble. Loggers have been cutting trees. Pollution is also damaging the forest, and some of the animals are being hunted. Global Warming is also having an impact on the mountains. Have you heard about Global Warming?

7. Helping the Himalayas Scientists are asking for stronger protection in helping the keep the species alive. They want to stop the hunting and to protect trees.

8. Spotlight on the Himalayas Size: 1500 miles long. Population: 40 million people! Climate: It can be hot (85 degrees) and it can get down right cold (below freezing)! Highest Point: Mount Everest is the world’s highest peak!

9. Spy the Species – Can you find these in your magazine? Leaf Deer – Meet Bambi’s mini-me! It’s only 3 feet tall! Blue Diamond Impatiens – They can change color. Isn’t that cool? Orange Spotted Snakehead – It’s not a snake, but a fish. This fish lives in ponds and swamps.
