How Much Does It Cost To Grow An Ounce Of High Quality Cannabis?
By Mathew On October 30, 2014 · Add Comment
Currently there are 23 States that have laws regarding the legal use of cannabis for either
medical or recreational use. Of those states, only these 15 will allow you to grow your own
cannabis at home – everyone else must buy through a state sanctioned dispensary.
Varying laws in these states mean that there are multiple cannabis markets and pricing can
fluctuate dramatically between purchasing recreational cannabis, medical cannabis, or from the
black market. According to ThePriceOfWeed.com, an ounce of high-grade cannabis can run you
as little as $233 in Washington state to as much as $393 in North Dakota when buying on the
black market. Legal and medicinal cannabis can be substantially less expensive…in the $200 per
ounce range.
No matter what your source is, buying your own supply gets expensive very quickly – especially
for medicinal users on a limited budget. Though the up-front costs may be substantial, the savings

2. come very quickly if you are able to grow your own. Typical home growers see a positive return on
their investment in just a couple of grow cycles.
Grow Supplies Needed – Up Front Costs
Here is an example grow setup for a small-scale home grower that wants to get at least one dry ounce of cannabis. In this example, the
grow space should measure no more than 2×2 feet and can accommodate 1 to as many as 4 plants depending on grow technique. Keep
in mind that your results will vary depending on growing conditions, strain selection, and your abilities as a grower.
Lighting
Of course we recommend growing cannabis with LED Grow Lights. For the purpose
of this article, our TL120 would be a perfect fit. While veteran growers can grow in
excess of 2-3 ounces with this light, newbies can expect an ounce or more … just

Soil & Nutrients
Ideal 420 Soil has been getting many positive reviews both for its effectiveness and its simplicity. This specially formulated soil/nutrient
mixture contains everything your cannabis plants need from seed or clone to harvest. All you need to do is add water. Their 0.5 cu ft bag
is enough soil for a 5 gallon bucket or multiple smaller containers – capable of supporting 1 to 4 plants for one grow cycle.

3. Cannabis Seeds
There are many reputable online sources for cannabis seeds: Royal Queen, Gorilla Seeds,
Attitude Seedbank, just to name a few. My recommendation is to pick feminized seeds that are
photoperiod (non-autoflowering). This way you know you end up with female plants and you can
control how long you keep them in the vegetative stage. Also be sure to pick an indoor friendly
strain that doesn’t grow too tall and has a reasonable flowering time (7-10 weeks). Seeds will
run you about $5-10 each.
Cost: $30-$50
Miscellaneous Supplies
There are a few more items that you need in order to round out your grow room…containers, light timer, circulation fan.
Cost: $30
The total up front costs here to set up a small space to grow your own cannabis supply is under $500 with the lighting taking up a
majority of that cost.
Electricity Costs
Depending on your location, electricity costs can vary greatly from $0.10 to $0.25 per kilowatt-hour. You can head over to our
Electricity Cost Calculator to find our exactly how much it will cost you to run your lights compared to HID. In a typical grow cycle, lights
would be on for 18 hours a day for 30 days during the vegetative growth stage and 12 hours daily for about 65 days during flowering.
That is a total of 1320 hours…the cost below is based on an average kilowatt-hour cost of $0.12.

4. Cost: $19
So after one growing cycle using the setup as outlined above, a new grower could expect at least one ounce of dry yield. A veteran
grower should be able to have a positive return on investment after one cycle, growing two ounces or more. The only ongoing costs here
are for soil/nutrients and for electricity – running about $50 per cycle. That is much better than $200-$400 per ounce, don’t you think?
