This document summarizes a fused glass bowl called "High Desert #2" created by the artist thom maltbie in 2007. Opaque white and turquoise glass was cut and arranged in a circle, then fired to 1400 degrees to fuse it together. The fused disk was then slumped into a mold in a second firing at 1200 degrees to form the shallow bowl shape. The finished bowl is 10 inches in diameter.

3. With the support of a generous fellowship
from the Lilly Endowment in 2006, I
created and installed several glass art works
at South Ripley Elementary School in
Versailles, Indiana.
This piece includes the handprints of 132
Kindergarten students etched onto
glass, with a border of etched quotes from
various historical and literary sources.

4. Another of the Lilly Fellowship art works involved 220 three-inch fused glass tiles made by
Third and Fourth Grade students at South Ripley. Students actively participated in making
the tiles, then planned the arrangement in the murals.
The tiles were fired at
approximately 1400
degrees to fused the
opaque colored glass.

5. The First Grade students at South Ripley hatch and release Monarch butterflies every year
as a Science project. The striking form and the beautiful green color of the chrysalis was
the inspiration for these wall-hanging glass and wood pieces. A clay mold of an oversized
chrysalis was created and the mint green glass was slumped into it in a 1200-degree kiln.

6. As a result of continuing study in sandblasting equipment and techniques, Maltbie Glass
Art is developing several lines of glass objects that are etched and carved with air-
propelled silicon carbide in a blast cabinet. All design work is original and the art works
vary in function. Custom glassware for special occasions and glass awards are also
available.
