8. Umbria’s Produce Beyond doubt, the red Sagrantino of Montefalco is one of the finest expressions of Italian wine making today, holding its own in any confrontation. Similarly, Orvieto’s white wines have also graced dining tables around the world following its popularity with Roman emperors and Popes. Wholly underrated internationally, Umbria’s olive oil has already established itself as one of Italy’s leading producing areas, so much so that Trevi has quietly been the reference point of all experts, tasters and gourmets! Norcia is the most famous place for Umbrian prosciutto production thanks to its particular climatic conditions of its territory and to the skill of the local artisans. It is not by chance that the name norcino used in the whole of Italy is used together with or, instead of butcher. In fact, Norcia's artisans have become the Italian ambassadors for a particular type of prosciutto , named salted or 'from the mountains'. Known as one of the most expensive ‘condiments’ in the world, the black, and the more highly-prized white truffle, are best-known as Umbria’s golden nuggets. Best grated over fresh fettucini pasta with no other condiment other than fine extra virgin olive oil, there’s very little else left to the gourmet palate. Not trying it would be a sacrilege!

TodiCastle and Umbria’s Notable Events Frantoi Aperti (1st – 2nd November) - Taking place during the first weekend of November, sees the doors open to several mills around Umbria offering visitors the chance to admire the olive trees, talk to producers and learn more about olive oil production through seminars and guided tastings as well as learning the secrets of a Mediterranean diet! Numerous farms and restaurants also take part in the festival by incorporating quality olive oil with traditional dishes. Cantine Aperte (May) - Perfect for wine lovers the Cantine Aperte, which translates to Open Wine Cellars, is Italy’s biggest wine event taking place in May. In its 15th year this important event offers visitors the opportunity to taste Montefalco wines and is a unique opportunity for all those who love to visit the wine cellars and vineyards to explore Umbrian wine culture and all its secrets. The largest producers in the area offer wine tasting matched to typical local produce. Black Truffle Fair (February) - More truffles are found in Umbria than anywhere else in Italy and it is especially famous for black truffles, a specialty of Italian cuisine. The festival attracts local and national food producers and other exhibitors including crafts, folkloristic entertainment, conventions, shows and sports competitions all centered on the truffle. Truffle hunting on Todi Castle Estate is a perfect way to spend time when in Umbria.

10. Umbria’s Notable Events The Umbria Jazz Festival, held annually in July is, without doubt, one of the most important jazz events in Europe. Since 1973, when it was inaugurated, the Festival has attracted the biggest jazz and blues artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Sam Rivers, Herbie Hancock, Enrico Rava, James Brown, Salomon Burke to name but a few. The Winter Jazz Festival, held in Orvieto over the New Year period, adds another cultural feather to Umbria’s artistic bow. Euro Chocolate - Known as the “City of Chocolate” for a week in October, Perugia is the underlying theme of the entire festival, which has now reached its eleventh year. It is an event that exhibits all things chocolate and is by now well known all over the country and Europe, boasting numerous fans, which in 2006 totaled 900,000 visitors! Spoleto Festival, Festival of the Two Worlds, is an annual summer arts festival held in Spoleto. Founded by the composer Gian-Carlo Menotti and the conductor Thomas Schippers, the festival has been held annually since 1958. It features the works of composers, singers and musicians, as well as writers, actors, painters, and sculptors from all over the world.

11. Umbria’s Cultural Heritage Umbrian craftsmanship dates back several centuries and it is still alive today thanks to the passion of local artisans. The most famous kinds of craftsmanship are ceramics , pottery and maiolica . The most important centres are: Gualdo Tadino, Città di Castello, Orvieto and Deruta. This last, has produced maiolica since 1500 and specializes in plates, vases and cups. Museums - The region is blessed with a plethora of diverse museums that range from art, archaeology, history to wine and olive oil centres. Among the most famous, which include the paintings of the home-grown ‘Il Perugino’, are the National Gallery of Umbria (Perugia), National Archaeological Museum of Umbria (Perugia), The Rocca Albornoziana (Spoleto) and the Palazzo of the Consoli (Gubbio). Assisi – Part of Unesco's World Heritage (2000), Assisi represents an ensemble of masterpieces of human creative genius, such as the Basilica of San Francesco, which have made it a fundamental reference for art history in Europe and in the world. As the birthplace of the Franciscan Order, Assisi has, from the Middle Ages, been closely associated with the diffusion of the Franciscan movement in the world, focusing on the universal message of peace and tolerance even to other religions or beliefs.
