2. What does WAP mean? WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol. It refers to the technical standard for the access of information via a wireless network (eg. Mobile e-mail, news. Etc).

3. What is it used for? The access of information through a completely wireless network (eg. Mobile networks). Can be used for E-mails, News, and music downloads, through any device that is capable of using a WAP connection like mobiles, pagers, two way radios and smartphones.

4. The technology side... WAP was originally invented to rewrite existing webpages into simplified, smaller files to be used in Micro-Browsers on handheld devices such as PDA’s and Phones. The browsers used when there is a display and surfing the internet are called Micro-Browsers, and accommodate the low memory and bandwidth constraints encountered when using handheld devices. It is designed to work with pretty much all networks, such as GPRS and GSM.

5. … WAP can be built on to just about any handheld or portable network operating systems, such as Windows CE, PalmOS, and FlexOS.

What is the difference between WAP and 2G/3G networks? 3G is basically a more advanced version of GPRS, giving faster connectivity, inevitably making it more useful than WAP 3G’s larger bandwidth and faster connectivity even allows normal web pages to be loaded on the browsers. WAP is only useful for sites formatted in .wml, web pages that have been simplified to make available on WAP.
