I want to welcome again to the AFD-AFC Info-Event. My name is Toon and I am the President of Academics for Development for this year. I have to announce that this presentation will be English. However, don’t be afraid, it is just because there are some international students in the hall and to make the AFD experience even more international, we do welcome them as well. Now, to get us started, let me first remind you why you are here. So sit back, relax and especially enjoy!
Comfortable? Relaxed? Inspired? Perplexed? Every single one of you came out here this evening with a purpose. To do something. To make a difference for yourself or others. Good start. However, I want to add something to that. I want challenge you today to get out of your comfort zone. To take every chance, drop every fear, and take part in one of our projects. Very likely, you might feel that the good stuff is always happening somewhere else. Life for you is something like this…
Now, most of you are quite obviously, judging by how some of you are sitting in their chair, right there, at home, at ease, in your comfort zone. Now, I can assure you, nothing really, truly special will happen in that zone. If you want to be where the magic happens I can give you a hint where you should be. And for those of you who have missed my point completely. YES! You probably get it now. AFD, wants to send you on your way and give you the opportunity to get out of your comfort zone. If you are feeling uncomfortable right now or at the end of this presentation, if this is bewildering or absolutely exciting, know that the change taking place in your life is a beginning, not and ending.
AFD has two pillars: projects and events. Where, projects are supposed to help you unlock skills, potential and experience, and let you do something practical, events aim to inform and inspire a wide spectrum of students. Last year for example we had an event around microfinance: explaining what it is? It’s advantages and disadvantages? Is it the way to go? And although quite present in the developing world, why isn’t it effectively employed on a massive scale?
An AFD Project then. We offer you year long projects where you work in a mutidisciplinary team on a problem of an NGO, fourth pillar organisation or company. In the summer, you are then given the opportunity to actually go to the South to implement your project on site. Teambuilding are definitely an essential part of the AFD project, to ensure that as a team you can build on each others potential and go beyond your usual boundaries. Friendship might be born from a two month journey to an often unknown country and culture.
So why would you do it? I can think already of 20 reasons why I would want to do it again. But to serve it to you on a silver platter, we’ve tried to summarise it.
AFD offers you practical experience. Exchange your knowledge, working together in a multidisciplinary team and get a unique combination of large ownership and professional coaching.
AFD offers you a change to have social impact, to change something, take initiative and become an entrepreneur.
AFD offers you international experience. A change to absord and get to know other cultures, work with the local people and understand their views.
AFD thus connects students, the developing world and the business world in a unique way. Offering students their opportunity to get practical and international experience, offering the business world a chance to work on their CSR and meet motivated students, and offering the developing world sustainale solutions for their problems.
How and what do I finance? Travel and leisure are of course at your own expense. The airplane ticket is too, but AFD helps you in applying for a grant to help you on your way. Housing and project costs are in general covered by the partner or as much as possible.
We are again looking for students from all backgrounds - economic, technical, legal, medical and socio-cultural – and from third bachelor onwards. If you are a second bachelor, extremely motivated and think you absolutely have what it takes, you are welcome apply and convince us. We are rather logically looking for students who are interested in entrepreneurship and development cooperation and who are passionate and take initiative. Last and in this case most important aspect we are looking for: a free summer!
So now all that is left for you is, going to the reception, ask some more information, go to the student welcome, then home, hopefully wake up on time and then apply for AFD! If you still aren’t entirely convinced or if you would just like to get to know us a bit better. Next Monday we have our Closing day, where we close off the project from last year and where the students present their project and what they have done on site. You can ask them, just like most of our board and coaches in a moment, very practical questions on the amount of time, approach, experience, etc. To apply simply send us your CV and motivation letter before the tenth of October. You apply for a project in general, but you can always specify a specific preference if motivated. Following that in the week of the 13th you will be invited to join us in an informal interview and if you then get the go, we kick off the year with a first teambuilding event for your team and the whole of AFD. More information you can always get in a second or at the closing day, or on our website and facebookpage: www.academicsfordevelopment.be.
No, if you hadn’t figured it out yet.
The time to act is now! Thank you for your undying attention and impressive turnout. Enjoy the evening and come and find us at the reception!
