Americans With Disabilities Act
The web cast was about the ADA or Americans with /disabilities Act. This act
covers the 504 Rehabilitation Act this is protection for individuals with disabilities. This
act applies in schools except for private schools and religious controlled groups. This act
covers public schools and places of employment with 15 or more employees, and public
facilities. The 504-disability act is defined as a person having physical or mental
impairment that substantially limits a life activity. The individual has a record of
impairment such as cancer in remission. Or if the individual is regarded as having
impairment perceived by others as impairment.
This act comes into play a lot in court cases individuals that feel that they have
been discriminated against have to prove that they have a disability that affects major life
functions or normal daily life, not a job requirement. The individual is not covered under
this act if they can perform daily life activities. This act covers individuals if one life
activity is affected by the disability.
If congress feels that a law needs to be changed to better accommodate an
individual with disabilities they will do so. Some changes that have been made are
learning, reading, concentrating, and thinking. These disabilities may be learning
disabilities or ADHD. If brain or neurological function limits life function an individual
is also covered under the ADA. A person is assessed on how they function without
accommodations.
I feel that it is upsetting that we need these laws to protect these individuals for
discrimination, but we do. It is great that we have them in place but I feel that us as

human beings could take it upon ourselves to treat others with equality, kindness, and
respect it would be a great thing to not need these acts.
