For millions of people, getting outside begins online, but that experience is often fragmented and inconsistent. OpenTrails is a new open data standard for park and recreation agencies designed to get their data into the hands of visitors and improve their experience connecting to the outdoors. OuterSpatial is an open data platform for aggregating, converting, managing and publishing outdoor data to web maps and mobile applications. The combination of an open data standard and an open data platform is facilitating a new ecosystem of outdoor mobile and web applications.

In the U.S alone, 145 million people are taking
12 billion outdoor excursions.
These people being poorly served by current
technology solutions.
Only 45% of the U.S. population is getting
outside. This is a huge missed opportunity.

locked up in PDF maps across tens of thousands of outdated sites.
As a result people are having poor experiences getting outside and
many people never make it outdoors.
