1. PowerPoint Template for
Origins & Chemical Change Project
• Project Purpose
– To make a connection
between your personal
interests and chemistry
– To share what you
learn with our
community of learners
• Background
– All matter is chemical
– Our human ability to
manipulate matter
empowers our human
abilities
– No matter what our
interests are – athletic,
artistic, financial…
chemistry is involved
2. Your Task
• Research and Create a report on
how chemical changes are
involved in an object or
vocation of interest to you.
• Keep track of your sources of
information.
• Make sure you save all your
research separately to your Y
drive or a personal thumb drive.
• Make a PowerPoint
following the guide
with a minimum of 8
slides as outlined in
the project guide
• Present your report to
the rest of the class.
3. The Specific Object
Step I / Slide 1
• Work Task
• Brainstorm and
Decide on the object
that you will focus on.
• Keep yourself flexible
and have a back up
object in mind
• Presentation
• Introduce your object
• Be as specific as
possible – Brand ,
model etc.
• Tell us why you chose
your object
4. Components & Ingredients
Step II A- C / Slide II
• Task
• After Identifying your
object make a list of all of
it’s components or
ingredients
• Choose a component or
ingredient you will focus
on
• Keep a backup component
in mind
• Presentation
• Include an Image of
your object and a list
of components and
ingredients – use
common and chemical
names
5. Raw Materials
Step II D-E / Slide III
• Task
• Identify the raw materials
used to make your
component
• Many raw materials may
be manufactured – trace at
least one ingredient back
to before human hands or
machines touched it (raw
earth, plant, animal …
materials)
• Presentation
• Show specific places on
earth where the raw
materials are sourced for
your item
• Include a map and images
of the places raw materials
are sourced
• Show the people who live
there
6. Chemical Change
Step II F / Slide IV
• Task
• Identify chemical
changes that take place
as raw materials are
manufactured into
your component or
item.
• Choose one chemical
change to focus on
• Presentation
• Describe the chemical
change with an equation
and show a model drawing
of compounds involved
• Provide a description and
images of how this change
is made – use the language
of chemistry
• Share any info you think
is important or interesting
7. Places & Effects of Sourcing & Manufacturing
Step II G / Slide V
• Task
• Research examples of specific
places where your –
– Raw materials are sourced
(mined or grown) and
processed
– Components are grown,
assembled or manufactured
• Research what the positive and
negative economic, health and
environmental effects of these
activities are.
• Presentation
– Present images of the
places materials are
processed &
manufacturing is done.
– Discuss major impacts
for the people and
ecosystems where
these activities take
place. Use the
language of chemistry.
8. Impacts of Use and Disposal
Step II H / Slide VI
• Task
• Research health and
environmental impacts
related to the use and
disposal of your product
• Answer the questions
– How can negative effects
be reduced?
– How could positive effects
be increased?
• Presentation
• Outline what the major
impacts of use and
disposal of your item
are.
• Give examples of
problems and
solutions to problems
(or negative effects)
9. Sources of Information
Step II - I / Slide VII
• Task
• Assemble all of your
sources of information
into a bibliography
– If you use wikipedia,
ehow or similar sites
you should have a
reference to the source
info for the article
• Presentation
• A simple list of
sources which you can
explain.
10. Personal Statement
Step III – Slide VIII
• Task
• Think about what you
have learned in the course
of your research
– What is the most important
thing you have learned?
– How may this influence
choices you will make in
the future?
– What would you like us to
think about as a result of
your research?
• Presentation
• Summarize your
response to the results
of your research.
11. Self Evaluation, Backup & Presentation
Step III
• Task
• Complete a self evaluation on the rubric
before your presentation – If you worked
with a partner you should state what each of
you did separately.
• Complete and give your presentation.
– Make sure you have made your
presentation interesting for your fellow
students – be creative with images and
layout
– Be direct with your writing. It is Ok to
orally explain simple images and
outlines of info as part of the
presentation – every detail should not
be written in slides.
• Presentation
• Email a copy of your finished
presentation to
tbullock@pps.net -That will
serve as your backup if you
lose your work.
