2. The True Costs of Print Advertising
Advertising has evolved a lot over the past 20 years and with it many new
methods for understanding your customers. Unfortunately, print
advertising has struggled to keep up with the growing online advertising
market for a number of reasons.
•
Print advertising is difficult to monitor, measure and to accurately understand performance.
•
Without ways to measure performance, it’s also difficult to gain a perspective on your ROI.
•
Print advertising is relatively expensive compared to many modern advertising formats.
•
A smaller audience is reading print publications as information continues to move online.
•
Difficult to change after advertising has started, often resulting in higher design costs.
3. The Huge (And Still Growing)
Online Ad Market
The struggles that print advertising face are - in part - a result of the growing
competition of online ads. Advertising online is nothing new however, it’s
been around almost as long as the internet.
North american businesses will spend over 50 billion in digital advertising in
2014 alone - some of which are likely your competitors. (eMarketer, Worldwide
Spending Forecast, 2013)
4. Why Online Ads Are Taking Over
Online advertising thrives in many of the areas traditional advertising
struggles, for example:
•
Online ads can be accurately tracked and give a detailed understanding of performance.
•
You can accurately monitor your return-on-investment with online ads.
•
The cost of online ads are lower than traditional ads because the lower cost of distribution.
•
A growing audience is searching for and consuming online information.
•
You have the ability to make frequent changes to most online ads at any time.
•
Colour ads are the standard. Animated ads are quickly gaining presence too.
5. Evolution of Advertising

same but the methods have changed.

6. Common Online Advertising Formats, Display and PPC
The two most common online ad formats that are replacing print advertising are
known as ‘pay-per-click’ and ‘display’ advertising - both of which have their
own uses and benefits.
Display advertising is similar to traditional print advertising in the sense that
you’re showing graphic ads to an audience for a pre-set price. This is often
priced in 1000’s of views (known as CPM).
Pay-per-click advertising is just what it sounds like. Only when a potential
customer clicks your ad do you pay for it. Both formats allow you to target a
specific audience and track performance.
7. The Online Audience:
Size & Scalability
In 2012, the average adult in the US spent 2 hours and 27 minutes online, not
including mobile, compared to 38 minutes on print media per day. (eMarketer,
July 2013)
In 2014 the average North American will spend upwards of 5 hours per day
accessing online and mobile information, while print media will continue on a
slow decline.
With such a significant amount of time spent online each day, it’s not surprising
that the online ad market is growing. Additionally, this massive audience
means there are more relevant groups to target and as you grow there is
always room to scale up.
