Conservation, distribution and types of forests and wildlife
1.
2.
3.
4. Conservation of forests
FOREST PROTECTION IS A GENERAL TERM DESCRIBING
METHODS PURPORTED TO PRESERVE OR IMPROVE A
FOREST THREATENED OR AFFECTED BY ABUSE. THE
TYPES OF ABUSE THAT FOREST PROTECTION SEEKS TO
PREVENT INCLUDE:
AGGRESSIVE OR UNSUSTAINABLE FARMING AND
LOGGING
EXPANDING CITY DEVELOPMENT CAUSED BY
POPULATION EXPLOSION AND THE RESULTING URBAN
SPRAWL
Do you know the forest cover in India in 2010 was
23.02% only
5. Conservation of wildlife
WILDLIFE CONSERVATION IS THE PRACTICE OF
PROTECTING ENDANGERED PLANT AND ANIMAL
SPECIES AND THEIR HABITATS. AMONG THE GOALS OF
WILDLIFE CONSERVATION ARE TO ENSURE THAT
NATURE WILL BE AROUND FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
TO ENJOY AND TO RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF
WILDLIFE AND WILDERNESS LANDS TO HUMANS.
The Indian wildlife act was implemented in 1972
8. Endangered species of India
SOME OF THE ENDANGERED INDIAN ANIMALS ARE ASIATIC
LION, ONE-HORNED RHINOCEROS, INDIAN ELEPHANT,
CROCODILES, KASHMIR STAG, HIMALAYAN WOLF, FLYING
SQUIRREL, LABEO, SNOW LEOPARD ETC
The population of the one-horned rhinoceros
fell down to 33% in 1998
16. Protected areas
THERE ARE 18 BIOSPHERE RESERVES IN INDIA. THERE
ARE 106 NATIONAL PARKS IN INDIA. THERE ARE 442
WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES IN INDIA. THERE ARE 19
BIRD SANCTUARIES IN INDIA
India has the second largest number of
protected areas in Asia
20. THE INDIAN RHINOCEROS ONCE RANGED THROUGHOUT
THE ENTIRE STRETCH OF THE INDO-GANGETIC PLAIN,
BUT EXCESSIVE HUNTING REDUCED THE NATURAL
HABITAT DRASTICALLY. TODAY, ABOUT 3,000 RHINOS
LIVE IN THE WILD, 2,000 OF WHICH ARE FOUND IN
INDIA'S ASSAM ALONE
Do you know that the one-horned rhinoceros is the 5th largest
animal on land
22. Conservation of Gharial
ACCORDING TO IUCN, THERE HAS BEEN A POPULATION
DECLINE OF 96–98% OVER A THREE-GENERATION
PERIOD SINCE 1946, AND THE ONCE WIDESPREAD
POPULATION OF AN ESTIMATED 5,000 TO 10,000
INDIVIDUALS HAS BEEN REDUCED TO A VERY SMALL
NUMBER OF WIDELY SPACED SUBPOPULATIONS OF
FEWER THAN 235 INDIVIDUALS IN 2006.
The gharial is the longest
crocodile on earth
24. EVEN IF WE WANT TO CONSERVE OUR FORESTS AND
WILDLIFE RESOURCES , IT IS RATHER DIFFICULT TO
MANAGE, CONTROL AND REGULATE THEM. THE TYPES
OF FORESTS ARE :
1.RESERVED FORESTS
2.PROTECTED FORESTS
3.UNCLASSED FORESTS
25. Reserved forests
Land rights to forests declared to be Reserved forests or Protected forests are
typically acquired (if not already owned) and owned by the Government of
India.
Protected forests
Protected forests are of two kinds - demarcated protected forests and
undemarcated protected forests, based on whether the limits of the forest
have been specified by a formal notification.
Unclassed forests
forests and wastelands both belonging to government and public
