Culture in any team is important, but remote (telecommuting) teams come with special consideration in making employees feel like they're a part of something great. Building this connectedness is difficult, but with some simple understandings, you'll equip yourself and team with the knowledge to build a strong team that lasts. Fluxible Conference 2013, Talk by Teresa Brazen Video of the talk here: http://www.fluxible.ca/2014/01/video-teresa-brazen/ More org/team culture tips & methods here: http://www.cooper.com/topics/designing-culture/ “We’re way off schedule. Everyone is disengaged. No one is on board with the vision.” Sound familiar? What if you could create great products and services without all that drama? What if there was a secret to stellar team dynamics? From “Ship It Days” to immersive onboarding programs, learn about curious, compelling ways that people from every role within organizations are creating inspired cultures. Drawing from her experience as a team member, team leader, and team facilitator, Teresa Brazen discusses what constitutes a “healthy” culture, how culture impacts design teams and what they create together, and tools and techniques for fostering environments we all want to work in. Along the way, you’ll discover how uniquely well-suited designers are to creating culture change if they adapt the methodologies already in their arsenal. If you lead a team, want to lead, work remotely, build stuff, wrangle people daily, or just want to learn about invaluable techniques for cultivating inspired team culture this talk is for YOU.

[Deck from the Interaction 13 Conference in Toronto, Canada. Synopsis below.] “We’re way off schedule. Everyone is disengaged. We can't get everyone on board with the vision. I’m not proud of the work we’re producing.” Sound familiar? Design doesn’t happen inside a vacuum. It happens inside teams, inside the context of relationships, inside physical spaces, inside organizations with very particular cultures. Ignore that intricate ecosystem, and you might as well give your project a death sentence. In this workshop, you'll learn about tools and techniques you can use to shape projects that are not only successful, but enjoyable. You'll learn the benefits of proactively designing team culture, walk you through the process of creating a healthy foundation, empower you with methods to improve unhealthy culture mid-stream, and show you ways to keep everyone engaged throughout the design process. Then, you’ll try it out for yourself: with feedback and mentorship, you’ll craft new methods and approaches that are appropriate to take back and try out in your team or company…no matter what your job title. By the end of this hands-on workshop, you'll know how to get projects started on the right foot, co-create without compromising output, and inspire teams, clients, and stakeholders. More importantly, you'll find that you can work towards dramatically improved project outcomes…without all the drama along the way. =============================== This workshop & deck were created by Cooper & Teresa Brazen www.cooper.com/training, @cooper www.TeresaBrazen.com, @TeresaBrazen

Dubai, often portrayed as a shimmering oasis in the desert, faces its own set of challenges, including the occasional threat of flooding. Despite its reputation for opulence and modernity, the emirate is not immune to the forces of nature. In recent years, Dubai has experienced sporadic but significant floods, testing the resilience of its infrastructure and communities. Among the critical lifelines in this bustling metropolis is the Dubai International Airport, a bustling hub that connects the city to the world. This article explores the intersection of Dubai flood events and the resilience demonstrated by the Dubai International Airport in the face of such challenges.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Explore how multimodal embeddings work with Milvus. We will see how you can explore a popular multimodal model - CLIP - on a popular dataset - CIFAR 10. You use CLIP to create the embeddings of the input data, Milvus to store the embeddings of the multimodal data (sometimes termed “multimodal embeddings”), and we will then explore the embeddings.

The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. About the author With two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
