Parking is free and readily available for all classes held at the UNM Continuing
Education/UNM Conference Center complex. Please refrain from parking in
the clinic or Masonic Lodge parking lots adjacent to our campus. Your car may
be towed or ticketed. If our front and back parking lots are full, overflow park-
ing is located at 1642 University Blvd NE, two lots north of our campus.
Computer Labs
Most of the computer courses are held in one of our dual-platform Digital
Arts labs with current software. Certificate students are encouraged to become
familiar with and use both Mac and Windows platforms during class time.
Policies
Attendance
One hundred percent attendance is required to receive a passing grade. If you
must miss a class session due to an emergency, email your make-up request to
the program supervisor within two weeks of the missed class. You will be con-
tacted regarding make-up options. You have one year to complete a make-up at
no charge.
Grades
All of our classes are non-degree and non-credit. You will receive a pass or
incomplete on your UNM Continuing Education transcript for each class.
Individual class certificates may be requested as needed. Master certificates are
issued upon the completion of a certificate program.
Waiting Lists and Changes to the Schedule
If a class is full, you can be put on a waiting list. If enough people are interest-
ed, we may open another section. Check our website for the most current class
listings. Register early to ensure a seat.
Refunds and Discounts
Your tuition, minus a $15 cancellation fee per non-credit course, will be re-
funded if a written request is submitted to us at registration@dce.unm.edu and
received in the registration office 72 hours prior to the first class meeting. Refer
to the UNM Continuing Education main catalog for more specific refund,
cancellation, and transfer policies and for any current discounts.
Prerequisites and Course Options
Prerequisites
The prerequisites listed with the course descriptions are intended to prepare
you for the next course. If you have prior experience with a topic, you may
place yourself in the most appropriate class. For basic prerequisite course assess-
ments, see page 55. “Suggested” courses are not required, but may enhance
comprehension.
Beginning Computer Courses
Operating System Basics (51101/4101/11) or basic Windows or Mac OS
experience is a prerequisite for all beginning computer courses in Digital Arts.
Students with equivalent experience may waive this prerequisite.
Equipment and Materials
Most classes are supplied with all the necessary course materials. However, some
classes may require that you purchase certain equipment or materials, such as a
digital camera or specific art materials. These requirements are listed at the end
of the course description or on your class receipt. For complete equipment rec-
ommendations, see our website or contact the program supervisor for details.
Homework and Practice Time
Some Digital Arts classes are project-based and require homework. These
projects are useful for portfolio building. For computer classes, we recommend
three hours of practice time for every hour in the classroom. If you do not have
a computer or the related software, contact the program supervisor to schedule
practice time. If you are pursuing a certificate program, owning a computer
and the related software is highly recommended.
Course Substitutions
If you have prior experience or training in related topics, you may, at the
department’s discretion, make appropriate course substitutions for required
courses in a certificate program after undergoing a portfolio review. Contact
the program supervisor to schedule an appointment.
Fast Track Courses
Fast Track courses are designed for those who already have some experience
with the subject matter and need to review or enhance their skills, or for the
very advanced computer user who needs a more fast-paced course.
Online Courses
Online courses are available in many Digital Arts topics, offered in partnership
with Ed2Go, Gatlin and SkillSoft. Because our online offerings are not exact
equivalents to our local classes, they are not approved for a certificate program.
To view our current online courses, please see our website.
Tutorial Electives
If you have taken a Digital Arts class with us and would like a little more
training with the instructor on that same topic or software, our two-hour
Tutorial Elective would be a good option. Tutorial Electives are also useful for
exam preparation or portfolio building. For more information or to schedule
your Tutorial Elective, contact the program supervisor. Some prerequisites and
restrictions apply. Cost for a Tutorial Elective is $199.
Applying for a Master Certificate
Requirements
There is no deadline for completing coursework for a master certificate.
However, after two years, the requirements may change. Contact the program
supervisor to ensure your requirements are up to date.
Submissions
To request a master certificate, email the program supervisor. Include your full
name, mailing address, phone number, email address, certificate requested and
a list of any approved course substitutions.

Certificate Programs
The Digital Arts certificate programs provide training and skills towards en-
try-level employment. If a certificate program has two levels, you may work on
Levels I and II consecutively or concurrently. Concurrent enrollment in both
levels will result in one final master certificate upon completion. The shorter
Basics certificates are designed for those who just need to get up and running
quickly or those who want to get an idea of what the field is like. Courses in
the Basics certificates also apply to the Level I certificates. Get started with just
the basics or go directly to Level I for a more professional track.
The number of hours required vary per certificate. Prerequisites are not in-
cluded in the certificate hours. Full-time students should be able to complete
one certificate in two semesters or fewer, and students may work towards more
than one certificate at any time. Customized training and certificates are also
available.
Apple The Apple certificates prepare you to operate, upgrade and maintain
Mac computer systems at home or in the office. In addition, this training pro-
vides the basis for a professional Mac consulting and troubleshooting career.
Take your Apple Certification exam with us.
Graphic Design The Graphic Design certificates focus on professional design
and production for printed and digitally published materials including bro-
chures, newsletters, ads, books, interactive publications, etc.
Web Design The Web Design certificates focus on building and maintaining
professional and effective websites. Various tools and techniques for web edit-
ing, graphics and marketing are presented.
Web Developer Build interactive, data driven websites using both client-side
and server-side technologies. Acquire an understanding of database design
and use, develop basic programming skills, and attain a solid foundation in the
construction of websites.
Instructional Media Developer Create rich materials for the classroom,
including multimedia content for online learning. In conjunction with the
Online Instructor certificate, gain an understanding of how adults learn in
order to facilitate the planning and development of content that will enhance
the learning process.
Multimedia Combine the web, publishing and/or video skills for projects for
websites, CDs, DVDs or training modules as well as brochures, newsletters,
ads, books, interactive publications or film shorts. Choose a publishing/web or
web/video concentration or a combination.
Digital Photography The Digital Filmmaking certificate offers training in
digital filmmaking including videography, video and audio editing, motion
graphics, animation and visual effects. Create professional video or motion
graphics projects or film shorts. Choose a video or motion graphics concentra-
tion or a combination.
Digital Filmmaking The Digital Filmmaking certificates provide training
in camera and editing techniques, motion graphics, audio, and 2D animation.
Combine this with Apple Certification in video-editing.
