Presentation: Decentralized Foreign Credential Eval. system. Differs in each state, prof association, school. Internal: Schools, State agencies do evals themselves. External: Candidate is referred to evaluation agencies such as WES. “Always check with where you are applying to” Evals are expert recommendations. Not mandatory. “more reputable eval agency, higher possibility of recognition” WES non-profit. Fee-based because no funding from government or foundations. 750,000 since 1974. 50,000 each year. The most reputable eval service. 35 years of experience in FCE. Everyone knows WES.
Authentication is important Recipient can understand what power the credential has in the U.S. context Can understand if the degree is real. Especially the case with foreign degrees. That is why verification of foreign degrees in important. Does institution exist? Does it offer such degree? Etc… Most reputable reports. As I told, WES is well-known. Since evaluations are expert recommendations, it is important to get your degrees evaluated by well-known and trusted experts. Multiple purposes: Universities, employers, professional boards/associations, state licensing agencies will ask for the Eval, Citizenship and Immigration Services. Might be good idea to get additional reports in sealed envelopes.
There are regulated and non-regulated occupations. It might cost you thousand dollars. As an investment for better opportunities. But it also costs time. Alternative pathways to licensing. Use the opportunities of NY Tri-Area. For ex: NY State require licensing to work as a MLT. But New Jersey state delegated the responsibility to employers. So it is up to the employer to verify your qualifications. Related fields without licensing. For ex: you can work as Certified Nursing Assistant until you become Registered Nurse. Each state has different requirements and procedures. Always consult with your prof board/association in your state. In some cases, you might be asked to take national certifications for foreign-trained profs in order to be eligible for licensure. Certification is not always required for licensure. But you might want to get certified in order to strengthen your qualifications. Certifications are granted by professional boards/associations. Don’t confuse certification with certificate of completion from academic training programs.

There are a few things to keep in mind about the US job search. As I explain these, think about how these traits are different than those of the job search in your home country. The job search here is very fast paced. Job postings are listed daily and receive over 200 responses – even if the job is still posted after a few weeks, the employer probably has enough resumes to fill the position. Lesson—if you are slow you miss out on an opportunity. Your own response time has to be fast too. If you do not respond to an inquiry from an employer within 24-48 hours, they will probably no longer consider you in the process. On the other hand, employers response time can vary, so don’t be discouraged if you do not hear right away. Much communication in the U.S. job search is done via email and on the internet. We are going to talk more about how to effectively use the internet in your search in a bit. One unique characteristic of the job search here is the US style of networking – using your connections to find out about opportunities in your field. We are going to go into more depth with this as well. Are these traits the same in your home country?? 5 Minutes
When starting a job search, the first thing you need to do is be able to clearly and concisely share with anyone: who you are what you can do what you are looking for This information is important to share throughout all aspects of your job search including on your resume, during the interview, and while networking with people in your field. Today, we are going to use this template, what we call “the elevator pitch” to introduce ourselves to the group. What is an Elevator Pitch?? Take a few minutes to fill this out….example: Hi my name is Francie. I am originally from the US. I have experience in the non-profit field working with immigrants and refugees. I am looking for a position as an Outreach Coordinator in a non-profit organization that works with Immigrant Professionals. 5 Minutes
In the U.S. the resume is a critical tool to communicate who you are and is often the first impression you are able to make. Resumes look different all around the world, but having a resume that is formatted in the U.S. style is an important first step. I mentioned that the U.S. job search is fast paced…well, here is a good example. US employers spend an average of 20 seconds reviewing a resume! So it has to get the point across quickly! Within a few seconds an employer should be able to see what you want, what you bring, and what you can do. If you can show them this quickly, they will take the time to read more details. There are some common mistakes IPs tend to make in their resumes….
That said, the internet is still an important tool…but it can’t be your only one. People often make these mistakes. Instead, think about the job boards as a research tool. Ex. Find a job you are qualified for – maybe the title is different than you expected or than you are used to in your home country – now search for more jobs with that title! Use them to learn about companies you are interested in and jobs that meet your qualifications.
