This study focuses on social networking. I get interested about Wal-Mart’s ways of
using social networking for their operations like researching, recruiting new
employees, and promoting their services. I am convinced to have this topic
because of the controversies about utilizing social networking sites in the business.
Others believe that using them can only waste money and time of the company
that can be intended to other important things. For them, selling the products can
be better done by speaking to the customers personally. Wal-Mart has been using
the social networking sites for different purposes. To recruit employees, the
company uses LinkedIn. Facebook is used by publicly displaying the history of
Wal-Mart, asking suggestions from the customers and recruiting employees as
well. Twitter has been site where questions for the customers are posted. To
promote green living and gain ideas about the products, Pinterest has been used.
To make some service updates, Google played the task. To show off the
company’s products, YouTube and other sites are being used. Smart phone
applications have been used also to gain attention from smart phone savvy users.
Social networking plays a vital part in the business operations like getting
connected to the customers. Among the world retailers, Wal-Mart has higher rate
when it comes to connection to customers. Wal-Mart interacts to the stakeholders
and customers world-widely via Twitter, YouTube, Foursquare, and Facebook.
Aside from these, e-mail also is used in order to gather suggestions or
recommendations, complaints and questions of the customers. Also, it is used to
send e-mails to the customers, coupons, surveys and advertisements regularly.
Within the company, e-mail has been utilized to keep in touch with the other
retailers, employees and also to company stores worldwide. Wal-Mart implements
policies and guidelines with the employees’ and customers’ use of social
networking sites.
Wal-Mart and other companies consider their usage of social networking in
business as successful. Twitter for example has been Wal-Mart’s place to post
publicly their different initiatives and activities which cover information about
sustainability, diversity, healthy foods and charitable activities “(Wal-Mart’s
Social Media). The customers can express ideas and anything about the company.
Wal-Mart gained more likes in Facebook which reaches to 29,267,523. The
company really spends effort and time for their Facebook page development.
Facebook timeline shows the improvement and growth of brand over a long period
of time. This Facebook page is where the customers send their concerns,
complaints, questions so with their ideas in regards to the services offered.
Presently, Wal-Mart is working for in-store promotional campaigns to the users of
